Anatomy of the pericarp and seed-coat of Lithraea molleoides (Vell.) Engl. (Anacardiaceae) with taxonomic notes BABT

The aim of the present work was to record anatomical data for the fruit and seed of Lithraea molleoides (Vell.) Engl, and compare the results with those for L. brasiliensis and the genera Schinus and Rhus. The L. molleoides fruit was a drupe with a friable and lignified exocarp. The mesocarp was parenchymatous with large secretory canals associated with vascular bundles. The endocarp consisted of four layers: an outer layer of polyhedral cells with prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate, and three inner layers of sclereids in a palisade arrangement. In commercial coffee species (Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora), fruit development is a lengthy process, characterized by tissue changes and evolutions. For example, soon after fecundation and up to mid development, the fruit is mainly constituted of the pericarp and perisperm tissue. Thereafter, the perisperm gradually disappears and is progressively replaced by the endosperm (true seed). Initially present in a "liquid" state, the endosperm hardens as it ripens during the maturation phase, as a result of accumulation of storage proteins, sucrose and complex polysaccharides representing the main reserves of the seed. Astronium graveolens é um representante arbóreo da família Anacardiaceae que se distribui desde o México até o centro-sul da América do Sul. O fruto é uma pseudo-sâmara com exocarpo unisseriado, suberificado e aderido ao mesocarpo. O mesocarpo é parenquimático, com grandes canais secretores associados aos feixes vasculares e localizados próximos ao endocarpo. O endocarpo parenquimático é bisseriado, sendo a camada que reveste o lóculo ligeiramente alongada radialmente. The mature fruits of 10 South American species of Solanum sect. Torva were studied. Cross and longitudinal microtome sections, stained with astra blue/basic fuchsin, were made for microscopic examination. All species present an epidermis formed by a unistrate layer of small, isodiametric cells, with dense content and cellulosic walls. Immediately below, a hypodermis is always found, consisting of a well-defined layer of lignified cells with a single calcium oxalate crystal occupying the whole lumen of each cell. Fruits (pericarps and seeds) of the weedy species Sida rhombifolia L., S. urens L. and S. regnellii R. E. Fr. were analyzed structurally using light and scanning electron microscopy. The yellowish brown calyx is persistent on the mature fruit and consists of a crystalliferous hypodermis with U-shaped wall thickenings and homogeneous mesophyll. This study aims to give an overall view of fruit structure in Bromeliaceae, since these studies are extremely scarce in this family, showing the morphology, anatomy and ontogeny of fruits of six species belonging to six different genera, representing three subfamilies. All species studied have a tricarpellary and trilocular ovary, with an obturator covering the placental region. Morphological and anatomical features of the flowers and fruits during the development of Chamissoa altissima (Jacq.) Kunth (Amaranthaceae) BABT

The morphology and structure of the flowers and fruits of Chamissoa altissima (Jacq.) Kunth during the development were analyzed. The plant material was fixed in FAA 50, embedded in historesin and sectioned according to standard techniques. The flowers presented tepals with betalain and homogeneous mesophyll; receptacular nectary; anthers with epidermis, endothecium, one middle layer, and uninucleate tapetum; and monocarpelar ovary with homogeneous mesophyll. The fruit was a circumscissile capsule, presented the same number of cellular layers that the ovary, and possessed subendocarpic sclerenchyma. The seed was bitegmic, exotestal and perispermic.

Ontogeny and Structure of the Pericarp of Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (Anacardiaceae) BABT

The fruit of Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi is a globose red drupe with friable exocarp when ripe and composed of two lignified layers: the epidermis and hypodermis. The mesocarp is parenchymatous with large secretory ducts associated with vascular bundles. Euphorbiaceae s.l. presents several morphological types of fruits, of which the schizocarp is the most common. The fruits of weed species of Euphorbia graminea Jacq., Euphorbia heterophylla L., Euphorbia hirta L. (= Chamaesyce hirta (L.) 台南白玉米自交系果皮性狀之變異與相關性分析 Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute

[[abstract]]由臺灣八個不同地區所蒐集的台南白玉米族群,經人工自交5 個世代,並根據株型 和穗型所選留的S5 世代自交系合計291 個為材料,以達生理成熟期之種子,每一自交 系取10 粒扁平型之種子進行籽粒重與果皮性狀之調查。結果顯示,所選留的自交系其 發芽面果皮厚度之變域介於48 ~ 313 μm,總平均為132.4 μm,呈現非常態分佈;非發 芽面果皮厚度之變域介於57 ~ 299 μm,總平均為140.1 μm,呈現非常態分佈;平均果 皮厚度之變域介於53~ 298 μm,總平均為136.4 μm,呈現非常態分佈;果皮含量之變域 介於3% ~ 14.88%,總平均為7.39%,呈現非常態分佈,可知不同的自交系間果皮性狀 之變異極大。所選留自交系由嘉義、雲林、花蓮族群分離者具有較薄之果皮,而由屏東 與台東族群分離者則具有較厚的果皮。性狀間之相關分析顯示自交系籽粒重與果皮厚度 及含量間無相關性存在;發芽面果皮厚度、非發芽面果皮厚度、平均果皮厚度及果皮含 量等性狀間呈極顯著正相關。

台灣不同地區台南白玉米族群果皮性狀之變異 Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute

[[abstract]]由花蓮、台北、台中、雲林、嘉義、高雄、屏東及台東等地所蒐集的台南白玉米族 群之種子,於秋作在台中霧峰農業試驗所農場試驗田繁殖後代,每一族群逢機取樣400 株,每株取一粒種子,每一族群各取400 粒達生理成熟期且充實飽滿之種子,測定其籽 粒重及果皮性狀。結果顯示:八個不同地區台南白族群間其籽粒重、發芽面果皮厚度、 非發芽面果皮厚度、平均果皮厚度和發芽面與非發芽面果皮厚度之差值等五個性狀均達 極顯著差異。就平均值而言,籽粒重以台北族群最重,最輕為花蓮族群。發芽面果皮厚 度,以高雄族群最厚,最薄者為花蓮族群。非發芽面果皮厚度,以高雄族群最厚,最薄 者為台東族群。果皮含量以雲林、屏東及台東三地區最少,最高者為高雄族群。平均果 皮厚度以台東族群最薄,最厚者為高雄族群。一般發芽面果皮厚度呈現較非發芽面果皮 為薄,發芽面與非發芽面果皮厚度之差值,以台東族群差異最小,差值最大者台北族群。 不同地區台南白籽粒重和果皮性狀之頻度分布與族群統計介量也有所差異。顯然,由於 環境差異或有意無意留種的結果,已使台南白品種分化並形成不同生態型。就籽粒重與 果皮性狀間之相關分析,顯示發芽面果皮厚度與非發芽面、平均果皮厚度之間,及平均 果皮厚度與非發芽面、發芽面減去非發芽面果皮厚度之差值間其相關均呈極顯著正相關。
