A new Xenacanthiformes shark (Chondrichthyes, Elasmobranchii) from the Late Paleozoic Rio do Rasto Formation (Paraná Basin), Southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
PAULIV,VICTOR E.; DIAS,ELISEU V.; SEDOR,FERNANDO A.; RIBEIRO,ANA MARIA.
The Brazilian records on Xenacanthiformes include teeth and cephalic spines from the Parnaíba, Amazonas and Paraná basins. This work describes a new species of Xenacanthidae, collected in an outcrop of Serrinha Member of Rio do Rasto Formation (Wordian to Wuchiapingian), Paraná Basin, municipality of Jacarezinho, State of Paraná. The teeth of the new species are two or three-cuspidated and the aboral surface show a smooth concavity and one rounded basal tubercle. The coronal surface presents one semi-spherical and subcircular coronal button, and also two lateral main cusps and one central (when present) with less than one fifth of the size of the lateral cusps in the labial portion. The lateral cusps are asymmetric or symmetric, rounded in transversal...

Composition and palaeogeographic position of the Early Permian Jambi flora from Sumatra Naturalis
Waveren, I.M. van; Iskandar, E.A.P.; Booi, M.; Konijnenburg-van Cittert, J.H.A. van.
A preliminary taxonomic revision of the Early Permian Jambi flora results in a lower number of taxa, a number of new determinations and several new combinations (Dicranophyllum molle (Jongmans & Gothan) comb. nov., Oligocarpia posthumii (Jongmans & Gothan) nov. comb., Callipteridium strictinervis (Jongmans & Gothan) comb. nov.). Cones containing the bicuspidate seeds Tobleria bicuspis are recorded for the first time. The exact stratigraphic position of the Jambi flora is unknown, but brachiopods and fusulinids indicate an Early Permian age. Comparisons with the East Asian Permian floras of the Cathaysian realm indicate that the Jambi palaeoflora can best be compared to a relatively xeric Cathaysian flora, possibly indicative of relatively high...

Leonardosia langei Sommer (Charophyta, Porocharaceae) from Corumbataí Formation (Guadalupian), Piracicaba, SP, Brazil: First record of an antheridium and of corticated thalli Ameghiniana
Souza Faria,Rafael; Ricardi-Branco,Fresia.
Fossilized portions of a charophyte found in close association with disperse gyrogonites identified as Leonardosia langei Sommer are described. One sample has an antheridium apparently connected to a thallus clearly corticated. Considering the close association and the lack of other carophyte species than L. langei the thalli are thought to belong to this species. The male structure is very rare and is recorded for the first time in L. langei and in the Porocharaceae. The samples consist of compressions/impressions from the Corumbataí Formation (Guadalupian of the Paraná Basin), found in the municipality of Piracicaba, in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. The presence of such algae provides evidence of some of the palaeoenvironmental conditions prevailing...

Megaspores from coals of the Triunfo Member, Rio Bonito Formation (Lower Permian), northeastern Paraná State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
RICARDI-BRANCO,FRESIA; ARAI,MITSURU; RÖSLER,OSCAR.
This paper presents the results of a detailed study of megaspores occurring in coal seams of the Triunfo Member, Rio Bonito Formation at Figueira, Paraná State, Brazil. This coal-bearing sequence accumulated in a marine delta system during the Early Permian. Four species are described and illustrated: Lagenoisporites triunfensis, L. scutiformis, Sublagenicula cf. brasiliensis, and Setosisporites cf. furcatus. Of these, the two species of Lagenoisporites are predominant. Relationships to other megaspore species are discussed; and the temporal and spatial distributions of the four species in the Paraná Basin are documented.

Permian plants from the Chutani Formation (Titicaca Group, Northern Altiplano of Bolivia): I. Genera Pecopteris and Asterotheca Anais da ABC (AABC)
Vieira,Carlos E. L.; Iannuzzi,Roberto; Guerra-Sommer,Margot; Díaz-Matrínez,Enrique; Grader,George W..
Fossil plants belonging to the morphogenera Glossopteris, Pecopteris and Asterotheca were collected from the upper part of the Chutani Formation (Titicaca Group), near the town of San Pablo de Tiquina, on the southeastern shore of Lake Titicaca (northern Altiplano, Bolivia). Here we report the analysis of fern-type foliage found at this location. Three species of pecopterid fronds are identified: Pecopteris dolianitii Rohn and Rösler, P. cf. P. cadeadensis Rohn and Rösler, and P. cf. P. pedrasica Read. All these species are typically found in Permian deposits of the Paraná Basin in southern Brazil. Despite the poor preservation of the material, a fertile specimen could be studied and was determined as Asterotheca sp. The paleoenvironmental and...

Permian plants from the Chutani Formation (Titicaca Group, Northern Altiplano of Bolivia): II. The morphogenus Glossopteris Anais da ABC (AABC)
Iannuzzi,Roberto; Vieira,Carlos E. L.; Guerra-Sommer,Margot; Díaz-Martínez,Enrique; Grader,George W..
This paper presents the first description of specimens of the morphogenus Glossopteris from Bolivia. The Bolivian specimens of Glossopteris consist of poorly-preserved impressions, although they present the diagnostic features of this morphogenus. They are fragments of leaves with secondary veins of taeniopterid-type, typical of glossopterids from Late Permian deposits of Gondwana. The only species of Pecopteris confirmed in the first part of this study, i.e. P. dolianitii Rösler and...

Progress on the palynostratigraphy of the Permian strata in Rio Grande do Sul State, Paraná Basin, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Souza,Paulo A.; Marques-Toigo,Marleni.
A review of published papers and results of analysis of new material have allowed improvements on the palynostratigraphy of the Permian strata of the Paraná Basin in Rio Grande do Sul State. Based on first and last occurrences of certain species of pollen taxa, two palynozones are formalized, these are the Vittatina costabilis and Lueckisporites virkkiae Interval Zones, in ascending order. The Vittatina costabilis Interval Zone is subdivided into two units, in ascending order the Protohaploxypinus goraiensis and the Hamiapollenites karrooensis Subzones, and is recognized from the glacial (Itararé Group) and post-glacial sequence (Rio Bonito Formation and the base of the Palermo Formation). The Lueckisporites virkkiae Interval Zone occurs from the uppermost...

Some spiriferid Brachiopods from the Permian of Timor (Indonesia) Naturalis
Winkler Prins, C.P..
The study of neospiriferine and spiriferidine brachiopods from the Permian of Timor (Indonesia) present in the collections of the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum (National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, The Netherlands) resulted in a revision of the species Spirifer timorensis Martin, 1881 and Crassispirifer broilii Waterhouse, 2004 and the description of a new species, Latispirifer archboldorum sp. nov. Also, a new genus, Archboldiella, is created, based on the aberrant species Spirifer basleoensis Hayasaka & Hosono, 1951.

The Botrychiopsis genus and its biostratigraphic implications in Southern Paraná Basin Anais da ABC (AABC)
Jasper,André; Guerra-Sommer,Margot; Cazzulo-Klepzig,Miriam; Menegat,Rualdo.
Botrychiopsis has been considered an important floristic element of Westphalian/Artinskian associations of the Paraná Basin. The occurrence of Botrychiopsis in roof-shales of the Rio Bonito Formation in Southern Paraná Basin (Quitéria area), supported by the identification of Botrychiopsis valida, enlarges the genus biochron. Consequently, the stratigraphic hierarchy for Botrychiopsis plantiana and Botrychiopsis valida was defined for the Paraná Basin. Although it is climatically controlled and related to a deglaciation icehouse stage, stratigraphic distribution of the genus presents a substantial climate tolerance, from cold/cool to warm/temperate conditions. A new phytostratigraphic zonation is proposed for the southern portion of the basin that includes...
