A comparative field study of growth, survival and reproduction of Crassostrea gigas, C-angulata and their hybrids 5
Soletchnik, Patrick; Huvet, Arnaud; Le Moine, Olivier; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Goulletquer, Philippe; Boudry, Pierre.
This paper reports a comparative study of two cupped oysters, Crassostrea gigas and C angulata, and their hybrids reared in the Marennes-Oleron Sound (France) under usual farming conditions. The relative proficiency of these species was characterized in terms of growth, survival and reproduction, three major concerns for oyster farming. Four populations of each taxon were sampled (C gigas: Japan and France; C angulata: Taiwan and Spain) and used as progenitors to produce six different progenies under common hatchery and nursery conditions (transfer of 5 to 6 g of seed oysters at sea and rearing in bags for 2 years). Mortality profiles differed greatly among the progenies. The C angulata progeny of Taiwanese origin gave the poorest results, with 100%...

Caractérisation et variation phénotypique et biologique des deux sexes du sandre "Sander lucioperca" (l., 1758) (teleosteen, percidae) dans la retenue de barrage de Nebhana (Tunisie Centrale). 20
Turki, O.; M'Hetli, M.; Chriki, A.; Kraiem, M.M..

Growth and meat quality of three free-range chickens and commercial broiler under the same breeding conditions 2
Zidane, Azdinia; Ababou, Adda; Metlef, Sarra; Niar, Abdellatif; Bouderoua, Kaddour.
Commercial breed has taken over the Algerian poultry production market which participated in the weakening of the village poultry farming, highly dominant prior to the 1980s. Fortunately, the dietary preferences of consumers, strongly participated in the preservation of the local animal breed diversity. In this context, the aim of this work was to study the growth performances and meat quality of 3 local chicken phenotypes versus commercial broiler chicken in the same breeding conditions in the region of Chlef in Algeria. A week after hatching, 4 randomly chosen samples of 30 chicks from each phenotype normal plumage free-range chicken (NPFRC), crested free-range chicken (CFRC), feathered tarsus free-range chicken (FTFRC) and commercial broiler chicken...

Impact of spat shell colour selection in hatchery-produced Pinctada margaritifera on cultured pearl colour 5
Ky, Chin-long; Sham Koua, Manaarii; Le Moullac, Gilles.
Beaded cultured pearl farming is a lengthy aquaculture process, particularly when the pearl oysters are produced through a hatchery propagation system, and includes the key steps of artificial breeding, larval and spat rearing before graft operations can take place. Within its genus, Pinctada margaritifera has the ability to produce the widest range of pearl colours, thanks to the donor colour polymorphism of the inner shell, which is mainly responsible for colour transmission. As hatchery spat production in P. margaritifera leads to several colour phenotypes (at 3 months old), the aim of this study was to determine whether a relation exists between the colour of the donors as spat and the final pearl colour. In the experiment, which took place over a...

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Streptococcus agalactiae in pregnant women: first study in a province of Argentina 58
Oviedo,P; Pegels,E; Laczeski,M; Quiroga,M; Vergara,M.
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the leading cause of neonatal infections. Our purpose was to characterize GBS colonization in pregnant women, current serotypes, resistance phenotypes and genes associated with virulence. In Misiones, Argentina, there are no previous data on this topic. Vaginal-rectal swabs from 3125 pregnant women were studied between 2004 and 2010. GBS strains were identified by conventional and serological methods (Phadebact Strep B Test, ETC International, Bactus AB, Sweden). Serotypes were detected using Strep-B Latex (Statens Serum Institut, Denmark). Resistance phenotypes were determined by the double-disk test. Genes were studied by PCR. Maternal colonization was 9.38%. Resistance to erythromycin was 11.6%, and the constitutive...

Plasticity in the shape and growth pattern of asteriscus otolith of black prochilodus Prochilodus nigricans (Teleostei: Characiformes: Prochilodontidae) freshwater Neotropical migratory fish 83
Costa,Rosa Maria Rodrigues da; Fabré,Nidia Noemí; Amadio,Sidinéia Aparecida; Tuset,Víctor Manuel.
ABSTRACT Using morphometric measurements and wavelets functions, the asterisci otoliths of curimatã, Prochilodus nigricans were analysed to identify the variation in shape and growth increment of individuals from Solimões, Japurá and Negro rivers of the Amazon basin, Brazil. The morphometric and morphological analyses did not reveal evidences of population segregation among rivers, but variations were found in the estimation of otolith growth increment. Also, the otolith shape showed a high variability between individuals, identifying four morphotypes. Morphotype 1 shows a more oval shape with a posterior zone clearly rounded; Morphotype 2 shows the posterior zone rounded, but the anterior end is more elongated; Morphotype 3 shows a completely different...
