Rafflesia speciosa is a threatened endo-holoparasitic species. It has several populations in the Central Panay Mountain Range (CPMR) of Panay island and a single population on Negros Island. Because R. speciosa is the only Philippine species of the genus that is not endemic to an individual island, it is a suitable species for improving our understanding of the factors underlying the high island endemism of Philippine Rafflesia. For this purpose and to inform the conservation management of R. speciosa, patterns of genetic diversity and differentiation were studied using 15 microsatellite loci and samples from nine populations. A specimen of a monstrilloid copepod collected by the U.S. Fisheries Steamer “Albatross“ in the Sulu Sea, west coast of Mindanao, Philippines, and deposited in the U.S. National Museum of Natural History, was taxonomically restudied. The specimen had been originally identified as a male of Monstrilla serricornis Sars by C.B. Wilson. Reexamination revealed that the specimen represents a new species of the genus Cymbasoma, C. mcalicei. This species can be distinguished by its body proportions and body size, but mainly by the structure of the genital lappets, which have a serrated posterior margin unique in the genus. This is the seventh species of Cymbasoma reported from East or Southeast Asia. |

A new species from the Philippines, Vanoverberghia rubrobracteata, is described and illustrated here. The new species is most similar to Vanoverberghia sepulchrei from which it differs in its leaves with oblong to narrowly elliptic lamina, unevenly truncate ligule apex, glabrous and red floral bracts, red calyx, white or pink corolla tube and lobes, and absence of spots on the style. |

The Asian Development Bank has sponsored research on market-based instruments for managing pollution in Metro Manila, Philippines, where air quality is seriously degraded. This report offers three policy options for reducing particulate emissions and their precursors. For stationary sources, we recommend an emissions fee that creates efficient financial incentives to reduce emissions while raising revenues for monitoring and enforcement activities. For mobile sources, we propose a pilot diesel retrofit program using a low-cost technology that is effective at existing 2,000 ppm sulfur content. There are ten known species of Amorphophallus in the Philippines, and an eleventh is herein described and named as Amorphophallus adamsensis. It resembles A. dactylifer and A. rostratus. Diagnostic characters of this new species are provided. |

Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica habitually co-exist as parasites of cattle (Bos taurus) and water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), and despite variation in their morphometry, their species status is suspicious. Liver flukes isolated from cattle and water buffalo were initially sorted as F. gigantica or F. hepatica, and crude proteins were extracted and subjected to SDS-PAGE. Cattle had the preponderance of F. gigantica, while F. hepatica was the dominant species in water buffaloes. Co-existing cattle and bubaline fasciolids revealed similar protein profile suggestive of a close genetic relationship.
