A Digitalis purpurea elite population starting from a population grown wild JBAG
Papone,Mirta; Mascarini,Alba; Fatta,Nora.
D.purpurea is grown in cold areas with long days. In the Buenos Aires province market it is absent, probably because it is a complicated and expensive crop. The horticultural growers prefer the imported costly hybrid seed because plants flower without suplementary light or cold. The objectives of the experiments which were laid out were to find, among the individuals of a population grown wild, genotypes that responded to the Buenos Aires conditions, producing plants induced in pots and assesing if there was response to natural aggregates. Seed harvested in Bariloche was sown on the 29/05/o4. The plants were transplanted to 3 liter pots. 30 pots were placed in greenhouse and treated with chemical fertilization. 54 pots were placed outdoors in the sun and...

A genetic framework for flowering-time pathways in Citrus spp. Genet. Mol. Biol.
Dornelas,Marcelo Carnier; Camargo,Raquel Luciana Boscariol; Figueiredo,Luciana Harumi Morimoto; Takita,Marco Aurélio.
Floral transition is one the most drastic changes occurring during the life cycle of a plant. The shoot apical meristem switches from the production of leaves with associated secondary shoot meristems to the production of flower meristems. This transition is abrupt and generally irreversible, suggesting it is regulated by a robust gene regulatory network capable of driving sharp transitions. The moment at which this transition occurs is precisely determined by environmental and endogenous signals. A large number of genes acting within these pathways have been cloned in model herbaceous plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana. In this paper, we report the results of our search in the Citrus expressed sequence tag (CitEST) database for expressed sequence tags...

Allelic variation at the Vrn-A1, Vrn-B1, Vrn-D1, Vrn-B3 and Ppd-D1a loci of Pakistani spring wheat cultivars Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Iqbal,Muhammad; Shahzad,Armghan; Ahmed,Iftikhar.
Flowering time in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is controlled by vernalization and photoperiod response, and earliness per se genes. The genetic basis of flowering time has not been investigated in Pakistani bread wheat. This study was, therefore, conducted to determine the allelic composition at Vrn-A1, Vrn-B1, Vrn-D1, Vrn-B3 and Ppd-D1a loci of 59 Pakistani spring bread wheat cultivars. These cultivars, along with 4 isogenic lines for vernalization genes were characterized with previously reported DNA markers designed for detecting allelic variation at 4 Vrn (Vernalization) and 1 Ppd (Photoperiod) loci. Spring habit Vrn-A1a allele was found in 36% cultivars either alone or with spring habit Vrn-B1 and Vrn-D1 alleles. Two wheat cultivars had the...

Artificial light and growth regulators on the in vitro etiolation of Cattleya labiata Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Rodrigues,Antonio Anderson de Jesus; Santos,Eder de Oliveira; Takane,Roberto Jun; Carvalho,Ana Cristina Portugal Pinto de.
ABSTRACT The technique of etiolation is widely used in the micropropagation of various plant species. The aim of this study was to evaluate growth and development in shoots of Cattleya labiata grown in vitro, as a function of growth regulators and the presence and absence of light. Stem segments, approximately ± 1.0 cm in height, were inoculated in test tubes containing 15.0 mL of MS culture medium supplemented with different concentrations of BAP (0.0, 2.0 and 4.0 mg L-1) and NAA (0.0, 1.0 and 2.0 mg L-1), and in different growth environments (growth room, darkness and a photoperiod of 16 hours) in a completely randomised design. At 150 days, the following were evaluated: a) number of etiolated shoots; b) number of nodes per etiolated shoot; c) length of...

Biotechnology applied to salmoniculture R. Bras. Zootec.
Isler,Iván Valdebenito.
This work presents a conceptual analysis of the main biotechnologies used in Chilean salmoniculture, which is based on the production of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar, 356.407 t),silver salmon or coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch, 116.481 t), (O. tshawytscha, 2.062 t) and rainbow trout (O. mykiss, 189.178 t).These activities are focused on the photoperiod artificial manipulation to obtain out-of-season spawning, in the use of hormonal therapies which allow synchronizing the final oocyte maturation (FOM) and sexual maturity acceleration or the increase in milt volume produced by males. Such actions are carried out using GnRHa in doses close to 10 µg/kg of fish. Once sexual maturity is reached, in vitro manipulation of gamets must often be done due to either the...

Effect of Environmental Factors on Seed Germination and Early Seedling Emergence of Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum) Planta Daninha
LIU,X.; ZONG,T.; LI,Y.; ZHOU,X.; BAI,L..
ABSTRACT: Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum) is an emerging invasive weed in rape and wheat fields in China. A better understanding of its germination and emergence ecology will enable the development of integrated weed control strategies. In this study, we investigated the effects of temperature, photoperiod, soil water content, salinity, and burial depth, on germination and emergence of Carolina geranium. Germination percentages were over 74% under 15/20 and 20/25 oC night/day temperature regimes. Germination rate was independent of light/dark regime. Increasing salinity reduced germination of Carolina geranium from 81.1% at 0 mM to 0% at 160 mM NaCl. Seeds germination was peaked at 50% soil moisture, but was completely inhibited at < 20% and...

Effect of Feed Restriction and Photoperiod on Reproduction and LEPR, MELR mRNA Expression of Layers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
HAO,E; Chen,H; Ge,S; Huang,R.
ABSTRACT Photoperiod and nutrition are major factors that affect the reproductive efficiency particularly in female animals. In this study we examined the interaction of photoperiod and food restriction on growth, sexual maturation and receptor mRNA expressions of leptin, melatonin, and estrogen in abdominal fat and the ovary of pullets. There were no interaction effects between photoperiod and feeding level on body weight, abdominal fat weight, ovary weight at both 14 wk and 18 wk. Abdominal fat weight of feed restriction group was significantly lower compared with the control group at the age of 14 wk, 18 wk, and age of the first egg (AFE) (p<0.05). Ovary LEPR (Leptin receptor) gene expression showed an interaction effect of the first egg. Restricted...

Effects of abiotic stress on biomass and anthocyanin production in cell cultures of Melastoma malabathricum Biol. Res.
CHAN,L. K; KOAY,S. S; BOEY,P. L; BHATT,A.
Plant cell cultures could be used as an important tool for biochemical production, ranging from natural coloring (pigments) to pharmaceutical products. Anthocyanins are becoming a very important alternative to synthetic dyes because of increased public concern over the safety of artificial food coloring agents. Several factors are responsible for the production of anthocynin in cell cultures. In the present study, we investigate the effects of different environmental factors, such as light intensity, irradiance (continuous irradiance or continuous darkness), temperature and medium pH on cell biomass yield and anthocyanin production in cultures of Melastoma malabathricum. Moderate light intensity (301 - 600 lux) induced higher accumulation of anthocyanins...

MARTINS,J.F.; BARROSO,A.A.M.; ALVES,P.L.C.A..
ABSTRACT Sourgrass is one of the most problematic weeds of Brazil. It is an aggressive species in the allocation of resources from the environment and reported to be glyphosate resistant in several states of the country. This work has aimed to verify environmental effects on seed germination and seedling emergence of sourgrass. Laboratory and field trials were conducted to determine the effects of temperature, light, photoperiod, water availability and depth of burial in germination and emergence of seeds. The maximum germination was greater than 80% for seed originated from resistant plants between 15 and 30 oC. For the susceptible ones, the maximum germination occurred only at 30 oC. Germination occurred for both biotypes independent of the presence of...

Environmental physiology of the bananas (Musa spp.) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Turner,David W.; Fortescue,Jeanie A.; Thomas,Dane S..
The bananas are thought to be particularly sensitive to changes in the environment. This review considers some historical and recent investigations into the response of the leaf, root and reproductive system to the environment. Monteith's analysis of the response of plants to intercepted radiation is appropriate for analyzing the productivity of bananas and plantains. The banana is sensitive to soil water deficits, and expanding tissues such as emerging leaves and growing fruit are among the first to be affected. As soil begins to dry, stomata close and leaves remain highly hydrated, probably through root pressure. Productivity is affected because of the early closure of stomata. We find the common belief that bananas use large amounts of water does not...

Growth and survival of dorado Salminus brasiliensis (Pisces, Characidae) post-larvae cultivated with different types of food and photoperiods BABT
Schütz,Jackson Haroldo; Nuñer,Alex Pires de Oliveira.
The effect of food and photoperiod on dorado (Salminus brasiliensis) post-larvae growth and survival was investigated using the following treatments: LD (Light: Dark) 24:0 + Artemia nauplii (A), LD 24:0 + fish prey (F), LD 14:10 + A, LD 14:10 + F, LD 0:24 +A and LD 0:24 + F. Prochilodus lineatus larvae were used as fish prey. Higher survival rates were registered in fish prey treatments (P<0.05) and were not influenced by photoperiod whereas in Artemia treatments, the survival was very low, but directly proportional to light increase (P<0.05). The better growth in LD 0:24 was related to a safe-energy strategy that reduced energy consumption whereas in LD 24:0, the higher energy consumption reduced the growth. In intermediate photoperiod, the...

Growth, molt and survival of Palaemonetes argentinus (Decapoda, Caridea) under different light-dark conditions Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Díaz,Ana Cristina; Sousa,Liliana G.; Cuartas,Elena I.; Petriella,Ana María.
Growth, survival and molting rate in Palaemonetes argentinus Nobili, 1901 were compared under different light-dark conditions. During 80 days, 150 immatures of both sexes (initial mean weight 0.09±0.002g), from Los Padres lagoon, Mar del Plata, Argentina, were maintained in aquaria at 19±0.4°C under three light conditions: 0:24, 10:14 and 13:11 (L-D). They were fed daily on an artificial diet (45% proteins, 17.2% lipids, 7% water, 7% ash). Good weight increment was obtained with the three treatments, finding a positive linear correlation between mean weight and time (0:24, r=0.97; 10:14, r=0.99; 13:11, r=0.98). There were no significant differences in the percentage increment in mean weight among the treatments (0:24, 19.3%; 10:14, 29.3% and 13:11, 26.5%)...

Identifying Eucalyptus expressed sequence tags related to Arabidopsis flowering-time pathway genes Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Dornelas,Marcelo Carnier; Rodriguez,Adriana Pinheiro Martinelli.
Flowering initiation depends on the balanced expression of a complex network of genes that is regulated by both endogenous and environmental factors. The timing of the initiation of flowering is crucial for the reproductive success of plants; therefore, they have developed conserved molecular mechanisms to integrate both environmental and endogenous cues to regulate flowering time precisely. Extensive advances in plant biology are possible now that the complete genome sequences of flowering plants is available and plant genomes can be comprehensively compared. Thus, association studies are emerging as powerful tools for the functional identification of genes involved on the regulation of flowering pathways. In this paper we report the results of our search...
