Phyllophaga cuyabana Moser (Scarabaeoidea: Melonthidae), uma especie nativa do Brasil, citada inicialmente em vegetacao natural, tem-se caracterizado como praga de soja, a partir de 1985. Na safra de 1988/1989, larvas desse besouro ocorreram em grande quantidade em lavouras de soja, no municipio de Boa Esperanca, PR, causando perda total em algumas areas. A partir dessa safra, a area atacada pela praga vem expandido, atingindo outros municipios e nas safras de 1995/1996 e 1996/1997, este inseto causou morte de plantas e grande perda de producao em lavouras dos municipios de Campo Mourao, PR e Ubirata, PR. Larvas de outros escarabaeoideos, provavelmente tambem do genero Phyllophaga, tem causado danos em soja e milho de safrinha em outras regioes do Estado... |

To evaluate the effect of soil management systems on population of white grubs, (Phyllophaga cuyabana Moser), and on its damage in soybean, experiments were set up under no-tillage and conventional tillage (one disk plow, and a leveling disk harrow) areas. Primary tillage equipment, used in other soil management systems, such as moldboard plow, disk plow, chisel plow and heavy duty disk harrow were also tested. Fluctuation of P. cuyabana population and the extent of its damage to soybean was similar under no-tillage and conventional tillage systems. Results comparing a range of primary tillage equipment showed that it affected soil insect populations differently, depending on the time during the season in which tillage was executed.
