Diet and resource sharing by two Pimelodidae species in a Southeastern Brazilian reservoir Biota Neotropica
Silva,Zoraia; Nascimento,Patrícia Elaine Cunha do; Vitule,Jean Ricardo Simões; Frehse,Fabrício de Andrade; Ferraz,Mayara Silva Oliveira; Mourgués-Schurter,Lea Rosa.
Abstract: Fish can vary their diet and feeding dynamics according to biotic and abiotic factors. There is insufficient knowledge regarding these factors in reservoirs, which limits the management of these areas. The aim of this study was to determine the diet of two related and most collected fish species, verify the influence of biotic and abiotic factors on their diet, and also verify the existence of resource sharing by them in an upstream Brazilian reservoir. Fish abundance in the reservoir was calculated and data were provided by 176 specimens of Iheringichthys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) and 255 specimens of Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803 collected in Camargos reservoir, MG, Brazil. Stomach contents were analysed through the frequency of occurrence...

Ecological and reproductive aspects of Neoechinorhynchus pimelodi Brasil-Sato & Pavanelli (Eoacanthocephala, Neoechinorhynchidae) of Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède (Siluroidei, Pimelodidae) of the São Francisco River, Brazil Zoologia
Brasil-Sato,Marília de C.; Pavanelli,Gilberto C..
Ecological and reproductive aspects of Neoechinorhynchus pimelodi Brasil-Sato & Pavanelli, 1998, in Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803 collected in the São Francisco river during periods of drought (July 1995 and 1996) and floodings (January 1996 and 1997) of this river basin are provided. In tropical regions where the amount of rainfall alters the hydrological regimen of limnological systems water temperature has not had an important role in infections of N. pimelodi in P. maculatus. Prevalence was somewhat higher during drought periods. Intensity of infection varied slightly between collecting periods. Mature male and female acanthocephalans were present in all periods. Females were predominant. Mature females were present in higher numbers...

Evaluation of fish passage through the Igarapé Dam fish ladder (rio Paraopeba, Brazil), using marking and recapture Neotropical Ichthyology
Alves,Carlos Bernardo Mascarenhas.
Rio Paraopeba, a tributary of rio São Francisco, has a six-meter high dam, built in 1978 to divert water to the Igarapé Thermal Power Plant. In 1994, a fish ladder was built at this dam. The results of a marking and recapture program carried out along rio Paraopeba between 1997 and 2001 are described, using information from fish community studies conducted at ten sampling stations between 1994 and 1997. These investigations showed the presence of at least 91 species in the river. During four rainy seasons between 1997 and 2000, fish were caught downstream of the dam, marked with external plastic tags, and immediately released at the same site. The objective was to evaluate fish passage through the ladder, based on recapture information from artisanal and...

Evaluation of techniques used to protect tailrace fishes during turbine maneuvers at Três Marias Dam, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Andrade,Francisco de; Prado,Ivo Gavião; Loures,Raquel Coelho; Godinho,Alexandre Lima.
Turbine dewatering and stop/startup may lead to the death of tons of fish at Brazilian power dams. The Três Marias Dam (TMD) on the São Francisco River has adopted two techniques to reduce the quantity of fish, mostly mandi (Pimelodus maculatus, Pimelodidae), affected by these maneuvers. They are: (i) spill before turbine dewatering to attract fish out of the tailrace, and (ii) fish screens in the stop log slots during turbine stop/startup to prevent fish from entering the draft tube. Here, we investigated whether spill and fish screens reduced the quantity of fish affected by turbine dewatering and stop/startup at TMD. We also determined whether the biomass of mandi trapped during turbine dewatering may be predicted by turbine discharge (Q) and/or catch...

Gram-negative intestinal indigenous microbiota from two Siluriform fishes in a tropical reservoir BJM
Duarte,Silvana; Silva,Flávia Cristina de Paula e; Zauli,Danielle Alves Gomes; Nicoli,Jacques Robert; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
The Gram-negative intestinal microbiota of Hypostomus auroguttatus and Pimelodus maculatus, a detritivorous and an omnivorous fish species, respectively, were compared between fishes from the reservoir and the stretch of the river below the dam of the Funil hydroelectric plant, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four selective culture media were used under aerobic and two under anaerobic conditions. The omnivorous species had microbiota with higher population levels compared to the detritivorous species. The number of morphotypes and population levels of total bacteria, vibrio and Bacteroides tended to be higher in summer and autumn in the reservoir, and not different in the river. The number of morphotypes of enterobacteria and total bacteria were higher in the...

Induced CYP1A activity and DNA damage in fish from the middle Paraíba do Sul River basin, southeastern Brazil Biological Sciences
Morado, Claudio Nona; Martins, Thiago Estevan Parente; Araujo, Francisco Gerson; Paumgarten, Francisco José Roma; Gomes, Iracema David.
The Paraíba do Sul River (PSR) drainage basin in Southeastern Brazil covers one of the most industrialized and densely populated regions of the country. The impact of chemical contamination on the PSR basin seems to be more pronounced in its middle reach where a number of potentially polluting plants are located. In this study, we used hepatic EROD activity - a biomarker of exposure to CYP1A-inducing pollutants (e.g. PAHs, PCDD/Fs, PCBs) - and the incidence of micronucleated erythrocytes (Mn) in the peripheral blood - a biomarker of effects of DNA-damaging agents (e.g. PAHs) - to evaluate the effects of pollution on two native fish species, Geophagus brasiliensis and Pimelodus maculatus. Results showed that the incidence of Mn and EROD in G. brasiliensis...

Optimal swim speeds by respirometer: an analysis of three neotropical species Neotropical Ichthyology
Santos,Hersília de Andrade e; Viana,Edna Maria de Faria; Pompeu,Paulo Santos; Martinez,Carlos Barreira.
The swimming ability of neotropical fish species is an important aspect for fish ladder designs. Especially in Latin America, where fish ladders are highly selective, fish strategies to negotiate the passage should be studied focusing on target species. This paper shows the swimming ability of three neotropical species (Leporinus reinhardti, Pimelodus maculatus and Prochilodus costatus), from São Francisco river basin. Respirometer was employed for data collection. Regarding the critical and prolonged speeds, L. reinhardti was the fastest among the three neotropical species in relative values (body length/second). The performance of neotropical species was better when compared to critical and maximum prolonged speeds of fish species from temperate areas....

Reynolds shear-stress and velocity: positive biological response of neotropical fishes to hydraulic parameters in a vertical slot fishway Neotropical Ichthyology
Duarte,Bernardo Alan de Freitas; Ramos,Isabella Cristina Resende; Santos,Hersília de Andrade e.
The barriers created by dams can cause negative impacts to aquatic communities, and migratory fish species are directly affected. Fishways have been developed to allow the upstream passage of fishes through dams. In Brazil, after the implementation of environmental laws, these structures have been built based on European and American fishway designs. Studies have shown selectivity for different neotropical fishes in some Brazilian fishways, and the main challenge has been to promote upstream passage of a large number of diverse fish species. The patterns of flow circulation within the fish ladder may explain fish selectivity although few studies detail the fish response to hydraulic characteristics of fish ladder flow. This paper presents a laboratory...
