The experiment was carried out aiming to analyze the dry mass production and distribution and the content and accumulation of macronutrients in sourgrass (Digitaria insularis) plants cultivated under mineral nutrition standard conditions. Plants grew in 7-liter pots filled with sand substrate and daily irrigated with nutrient solution, being maintained under greenhouse conditions. Treatments consisted of times of evaluation (21, 35, 49, 63, 77, 91, 105, 119, and 133 days after emergence - DAE) and were arranged in a completely randomized design with four replicates. Sourgrass showed small accumulation of dry mass (0.3 g per plant) and macronutrients (3.7 mg of N per plant, 0.4 mg of P per plant, 5.6 mg of K per plant, 0.9 mg of Ca per plant, 0.7 mg of Mg... |

The tropical legume Acaciella angustissima inoculated with or without Sinorhizobium mexicanum ITTG R7T strain was cultivated in an aluminium (Al) spiked soil to study its tolerance towards this metal. Seedlings of A. angustissima were grown in soil with 0, 2, 4 or 6 mg Al kg-1. The effect of Al and inoculation on growth, nodulation, and nitrogen and tannins content in the plants was monitored. Height and total and dry root weight of plantlets decreased significantly when soil was spiked with Al, but increased when inoculated. Al decreased the number of nodules. Inoculum increased total N and tannin content of the plantlets. It was found that Al reduced the growth of the tropical leguminous N2-fixing shrub A. angustissima, while inoculation with S.... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of the population density of Typha angustifolia plants in the anatomical and physiological characteristics. Plants were collected from populations of high density (over 50% of colonization capacity) and low density (less than 50% of colonization capacity) and cultivated under controlled greenhouse conditions. Plants from both populations were grown in plastic trays containing 4 L of nutritive solution for 60 days. At the end of this period, the relative growth rate, leaf area ratio, net assimilatory rate, root/shoot ratio, leaf anatomy, root anatomy, and catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activities were evaluated. Plants from high density populations showed increased growth rate and root/shoot ratio.... |

Auxin and insulin promote Zea mays embryo growth, induce S6 ribosomal protein (S6rp) phosphorylation, and promote specific protein synthesis. The objective of this research was to test a possible cross-talk between insulin and auxin transduction pathways in Z. mays coleoptiles, typical auxin target tissues. Auxin and insulin produced differential quantitative and qualitative stimulation of cytoplasmic and ribosomal protein phosphorylation, and specific patterns of de novo synthesized cytoplasmic proteins. In addition, insulin induced S6rp phosphorylation was strongly inhibited by rapamycin, indicating target of rapamycin (TOR) kinase participation; auxin-induced S6rp phosphorylation was insensitive to this inhibitor. Phosphatidic acid (PA), a second... |

The application of cellulosic waste in forest plantations is an alternative to disposal, but more studies are necessary to confirm the safity of this disposal. The response of Pinus taeda L. to salinity in Humic Distrocryept was evaluated. In plantation, the seedlings were assessed for their height and stem diameter (SD), and at 120 days, were assessed the SD, height, dried root biomass (DRB), shoot (DBS) and total dried matter (TDM). The contents of P, K, Ca, Mg and Na were determinated, and, based on these levels it was estimated the quantity of these elements and calculated the efficiency use in leaves and roots and translocation to the shoot. Except the relationship between DSB/DRB, the other variables were significantly influenced by increased... |

Tannery sludge contains high concentrations of inorganic elements, such as chromium (Cr), which may lead to environmental pollution and affect human health The behavior of Cr in organic matter fractions and in the growth of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) was studied in a sandy soil after four consecutive annual applications of composted tannery sludge (CTS). Over a four-year period, CTS was applied on permanent plots (2 × 5 m) and incorporated in the soil (0-20 cm) at the rates of 0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 Mg ha-1 (dry weight basis). These treatments were replicated four times in a randomized block design. In the fourth year, cowpea was planted and grown for 50 days, at which time we analyzed the Cr concentrations in the soil, in the fulvic acid, humic... |

ABSTRACT: The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the soil may establish an association with plant roots (mycorrhiza) which benefits the nutrient absorption by the plants and increase the effects of the applied inputs on plant growth. Then, to make profit of this association, it is recommended to increase and diversity fungi in the soil, mainly in those where its population is generally low, as in the cerrado soil. The crop rotation is an agronomic practice that improves the propagation of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the soil and stimulates mycorrhiza establishment and its effects in plant growth. An adequate rotational sequence to improve formation impplies in the use of mycorrhizal dependent cultures. A table, indicating the percentage of mycorrhizal... |

Abstract Various studies have been undertaken to evaluate the effect of polymer-based encapsulation on performance of plant growth promoting microorganism. However there is no systematic analysis about the performance of these microorganisms when encapsulated in a polymer-based matrix. Relevant published papers were retrieved by conducting searches in Google Scholar, Only Library, Science Direct, Springer Journal, Taylor & Francis and Wiley Online Library. An examination of 117 articles was carried out and of those only 11 satisfied our criteria for inclusion into the meta-analysis. From these articles, we selected 41 cases to be evaluated. We used as keywords “microcapsules”, “capsules”, “microorganisms”, “growth”, “promoting”, “germination”... |

ABSTRACT Although there are evidences that the proper supply of mineral nutrients to plants relieves water stress, little is known on the approach of how the drought affects the absorption and accumulation of nutrients by distinct sugar cane genotypes, or in different parts of a same plant. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the content and accumulation of N, P and K in the aerial part of plant from three genotypes of sugar cane, submitted to three water potentials in the soil, and check the relationship of these variables with the tolerance of plants to prolonged drought. In order to access this objective, an experiment under greenhouse conditions, comprised by a fatorial 3 × 3, in a randomized block design, and four replicates was carried... |

Improved grasses planted for forage are increasing in demand throughout Thailand due to the increasingnumber of cattle. New varieties are being introduced in response to new demands. Brachiaria grasses, especially the hybrids, are gaining popularity because of their good yields and high quality. However, seed production of the brachiaria hybrids is difficult. The objectives of this experiment were to find out the appropriate rate (0, 20, 40, or80 kg/ha N) of N fertilizer (46-0-0) for growth, seed yield and quality of three lines of brachiaria hybrid (Mulato II,BR02/1752, and BR02/1794). This experiment composed of a field trial and laboratory tests and all were conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture, Ubon Ratchathani University, Thailand from May 2009 to... |

This study attempted to clarify the effects of dark, light and ethylene on plant growth and endogenous levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), cytokinins and abscisic acid in Catasetum fimbriatum. Dark-incubation fully inhibited root and pseudobulb formation as well as leaf growth, but favored shoot elongation. The results of continuous and active growth in dark-incubated shoots (stolons) were induced by strong apical meristem sink activity and by the significantly increased levels of cytokinins in shoots. In fact, shoot length, cytokinin and IAA levels in dark-incubated shoots were about twice as great as for those grown under light conditions. Moreover, the total cytokinin level in shoots of C. fimbriatum under light conditions without ethylene was... |

A field experiment was conducted for two consecutive years to study the effect of fertilizer application methods and inter and intra-row weed-crop competition durations on density and biomass of different weeds and growth, grain yield and yield components of maize. The experimental treatments comprised of two fertilizer application methods (side placement and below seed placement) and inter and intra-row weed-crop competition durations each for 15, 30, 45, and 60 days after emergence, as well as through the crop growing period. Fertilizer application method didn't affect weed density, biomass, and grain yield of maize. Below seed fertilizer placement generally resulted in less mean weed dry weight and more crop leaf area index, growth rate, grain weight... |
