Detection and identification of TMV infecting tomato under protected cultivation in Paraná State BABT
Silva,Rodrigo Martins da; Souto,Eliezer Rodrigues de; Pedroso,Júlio Cézar; Arakava,Ricardo; Almeida,Álvaro Manuel Rodrigues; Barboza,Antônio Augusto Lazarini; Vida,João Batista.
During an inspection in plastic houses in Sapopema, Paraná, 90% of tomato plants showed leaf abnormalities, probably associated with herbicide toxity. However, virus like symptoms developed in selected hosts after mechanical inoculatation. RT-PCR reactions using primers for an internal region within the movement protein gene of TMV and ToMV resulted in the amplification of a 409 bp cDNA fragment only by TMV primers. Deduced amino acids showed 100% identity when compared to TMV movement protein and 94% with ToMV. The RT-PCR protocol was efficient for quick and conclusive determination of virus species. The virus was purified and a polyclonal antiserum was raised for future surveys in tomato crops of Paraná. The partial genomic sequence obtained for...

DISEASES INCIDENCE AND FUNGICIDE COST REDUCTION WITH OVERHEAD COVERED GRAPES Rev. Bras. Frutic.
ALMANÇA,MARCUS ANDRÉ KURTZ; FRIGHETTO,NATÁLIA SARTORI; TONELLO,JÚLIO CÉSAR; LERIN,SABRINA.
ABSTRACT An alternative to control diseases on the grapevine is the use of plastic overhead cover. The cost of developing a vineyard is a relevant factor in the use of plastic overhead cover and will be directly linked to the cost of pest control. The aim of this study was to establish criteria for the use of fungicides in vine plants with plastic overhead cover compared to conventional farming in order to reduce the number and cost of application. The experiment was conducted in the 2010/2011 crop year in Viamão - RS, using the Cabernet Sauvignon cultivar grafted on Paulsen 1103 in “Y Shape” trained, with 1.80 x 2.50 m spacing. The following treatments were evaluated: Treatment 1: plastic overhead cover: phytosanitary treatment applied when leaf wetting...

Economic Potential of Using High Tunnel Hoop Houses to Produce Fruits and Vegetables AgEcon
Donnell, Jeri; Biermacher, Jon T.; Upson, Steve.
Abstract Hoop house plasticulture has been promoted as a production technology that allows fruit and vegetable crops to be grown in the cool season months in early spring and late fall. At this time little information regarding the economics of hoop house plasticulture is available. Two fruit and vegetable production systems were developed for growing conditions in south-central Oklahoma. The first system has a spinach crop followed by field tomato, and the second system has annually produced strawberry followed by yellow and zucchini squash. Crop production data were collected in a three-year randomized and replicated experiment. The objectives were (1) to determine the expected cost of production for each crop and systems, (2) to determine the...

Influence of double cropping on growth and yield of dry beans with colored plastic mulches Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ibarra-Jiménez,Luis; Valdez-Aguilar,Luis Alonso; Cárdenas-Flores,Antonio; Lira-Saldivar,Hugo; Lozano-del Río,Javier; Lozano Cavazos,Carlos.
There are numerous studies of the use of plastic mulches in vegetable production, but there is little documentation of their use with dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in single and double cropping. The objective of this study was to grow dry beans over two consecutive growing seasons using the same plastic mulch of different colors and examine the influence of soil temperature on growth and yield. The experiment was conducted in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, in the spring and summer of 2008. The treatments included four colored plastic mulches: white-on-black, black, silver-on-black, aluminum-on-black, and bare soil as a control. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replicates. The percentage of photosynthetically active...

Nutrition, yield and quality of ‘Niagara Rosada’ vine fruits using cattle slurry and plastic cover Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Tullio,Leonardo; Morais,Heverly; Yagi,Renato.
Abstract Plastic cover and organic fertilization for grapevine can bring synergistic benefits in yields and fruit quality. The objective was to characterize and measure the effects of fertilization with cattle slurry in systems without and with plastic cover on plant nutrition, yield and quality of ‘Niagara Rosada’ fruits. Two experiments were carried out and evaluated in contiguous areas, without and with plastic cover, each one using a randomized complete block design with 4 treatments represented by cattle slurry rates of 0, 20, 40 and 60 m3 ha-1, with four replicates. The nutritional status of grapevines was not affected by cattle slurry application without plastic cover in plants growing on fertile sandy soil. Plastic cover provides better nutrition...
