Experimental planning for conducting experiments with cucumber 75
Lúcio,Alessandro Dal’Col; Lambrecht,Darlei M; Sari,Bruno G; Krysczun,Dionatan K; Ubessi,Cassiane.
ABSTRACT In order to be considered highly reliable (showing very accurate results), an experiment needs to be very well planned. Defining the experimental plot size and number of replicates is fundamental to control the experimental error at the beginning of the experiment. The aim of this study was to estimate the plot size and the number of replicates sufficient to perform experiments with Cucumis sativus. A uniformity trial was installed in the first week of January 2017. The spacing used was 0.3 m between plants and 1 m between rows, resulting in 12 plants in each of the 12 cultivation rows and each basic experimental unit was composed of one plant. The variables observed in 18 harvests were average fruit mass (MMF, in g), average fruit length (CMF, in...

Experimental planning for the evaluation of phenotipic descriptors in banana 94
Donato,Sérgio Luiz Rodrigues; Silva,João Abel da; Guimarães,Bruno Vinícius Castro; Silva,Sebastião de Oliveira e.
Abstract This work aimed to subsidize experimental planning for the evaluation of phenotypic characters in banana. The experiment consisted of a uniformity trial with Tropical cultivar spaced of 3 m x 2 m, in a useful area with nine rows of 40 plants. Vegetative and yield aspects were evaluated in two production cycles. Plants and basic units (UB) were combined to form various plot sizes, from which the variation coefficient and the soil heterogeneity index were estimated. To define the experimental design, the Hatheway method was used. Variability, resulting from the soil anisotropy and other factors such as desuckering cultural practice increases between mother plant and daughter plant cycles, with effects on experimental design. The variation...

Heterogeneity index of zucchini yield on a protected environment and experimental planning 75
Feijó,Sandra; Storck,Lindolfo; Lúcio,Alessandro Dal'Col; Lopes,Sidinei José; Garcia,Danton C; Carpes,Ricardo H.
The objectives of this work were to assess zucchini heterogeneity index and fruit weight at different harvest frequencies for plants grown on a protected environment; to estimate the optimum plot size; and to determine the least significant difference among treatments, varying plot size and replication number. Plants of cultivar Caserta were grown in a plastic greenhouse, using spaces of 0.80 x 1.00 among plants and lines, respectively. The following harvest frequencies were studied: fruits harvested daily, (1) at 10:00, (2) at 10:00 and 18:00, (3) at 8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00 h and; (4) fruits harvested every other day, at 18:00 h. Twenty-seven harvests were carried out, collecting fruits larger than 0.15 m. Plots were planned with 1, 2,...

Optimum plot size and number of replications related to selective precision 65
Storck,Lindolfo; Lopes,Sidinei José; Lúcio,Alessandro Dal'Col; Cargnelutti Filho,Alberto.
Planning agricultural trials and evaluating their precision is important in determining the credibility of the results obtained from the research. There are various methods for estimating optimum plot size and various statistics used to measure precision. Selective precision has been cited recently as being an adequate measurement for evaluating experimental precision. The aim of this study is to propose a modification in the way the optimum plot size is estimated, related to the variability of the experimental area and prefixed selective precision. The method was applied to a set of six trials with potatoes. The optimum plot size, which was estimated on the basis of the relation between the variation coefficients and different plot sizes, can be estimated...

Optimum plot size of planting and bio-agroeconomic revenues from arugula-carrot intercropping systems in a semi-arid region 42
DE CARVALHO,FRANK W.A.; NUNES,GLAUBER H.S.; BEZERRA NETO,FRANCISCO; BARROS JÚNIOR,AURÉLIO P.; DE LIMA,JAILMA S.S.; KHAN,AHMAD S.; DA SILVA,JOSÉ R.; MOREIRA,JOSERLAN N..
Abstract The production of vegetable crops has been characterized as a highly intensive activity in the use of soil, water, inputs and labor in semi-arid regions, being practiced mostly by small family farmers as a way of subsistence, or in the small-scale commercialization of surplus production. Among the agricultural practices that have been successfully used by vegetable producers are intercrop systems that, when implemented with adequate management, present gains in productivity, nutritional, economic, and environmental value. The aim of this study was to estimate the optimal plot sizes of plantings of carrot (Daucus carota L.) intercropped with arugula (Eruca sativa L.) in bi-cultivation in three spatial arrangements, as well as to determine...

Plot size variation to quantify yield of potato clones 75
Bisognin,Dilson Antônio; Storck,Lindolfo; Costa,Liege C da; Bandinelli,Maurício G.
The objective of this paper was to study plot size variation among potato clones to increase experimental precision of yield performance trials. The experiment was carried out at the experimental area of the Horticulture Dept., UFSM, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Tubers of five potato clones were planted in two rows of 60 hills in August 2004. For all ten experimental rows, combined plots were formed adding a different number of adjacent hills of the same row. Soil heterogeneity index and optimum plot size were estimated for each row. Real differences between treatment means for each clone and all clones were estimated using the Hatheway technique. The experimental precision of potato yield trials varied with the evaluated clone because of...

RAPELD: a modification of the Gentry method for biodiversity surveys in long-term ecological research sites 49
Magnusson,William E.; Lima,Albertina P.; Luizão,Regina; Luizão,Flávio; Costa,Flávia R. C.; Castilho,Carolina Volkmer de; Kinupp,V. F..
Our objectives were to develop a method that would be appropriate for long-term ecological studies, but that would permit rapid surveys to evaluate biotic complementarity and land-use planning in Amazonia. The Amazon basin covers about 7 million km². Therefore, even a sparse coverage, with one sample site per 10.000 km², would require about 700 sampling sites. Financial considerations limit the number of sites and investment at each site, but incomplete coverage makes evaluation of biotic complementarity difficult or impossible (Reddy & Dávalos 2003). Our next challenge is to install similar systems throughout Amazonia. The cost, based on modification of Al Gentry's original design is moderate (less than US$ 50.000 per site if it is not necessary...

The spatial and temporal independence of Italian Zucchini production 1
Benz, Vilson; Lúcio, Alessandro Dal’Col; Lopes, Sidinei José.
It is necessary to know the production variability of experimental units in a protected environment, both in terms of space and throughout different harvests. This knowledge helps reduce experimental error and increases result reliability in combination with the adoption of appropriate experimental techniques and cultural management. The objective of this study was to characterize the spatial and temporal independence of Italian Zucchini fruit production as cultivated in a protected environment. The study used production data from exploratory experiments under protected cultivation in the Department of Plant Sciences of the Federal University of Santa Maria. Different units sizes were simulated on the basis of known production values for the number of...

Variability of production and the planning of experiments in snapbeans 75
Lúcio,Alessandro D; Santos,Daniel.
ABSTRACT This work aimed at studying the variability of production of snapbeans grown in plastic greenhouses and the effectiveness of experimental borders and plot size in reducing such variability. Data from a uniformity experiment carried out in a plastic greenhouse were used. The analyzes were performed over spatial arrangements that considered the plants first arranged in planting rows parallel to the lateral openings of the greenhouse and then arranged in columns, perpendicular to these openings. Different scenarios were produced by excluding rows and columns. The homogeneity of variances between the remaining rows and columns was tested in each scenario, and the variance and the coefficient of variation were calculated as well. There was...
