ABSTRACT Linseed hydrogel (LSH) was evaluated by acute toxicity for its potential application in oral drug delivery design. White albino mice and rabbits were divided in four groups (I-IV) and different doses of LSH (1, 2 and 5 g/kg body weight) were given except to the control group (I) that was left untreated. Rabbits were monitored for eye irritation, acute dermal toxicity and primary dermal irritation, whereas, body weight, food and water consumption, hematology and clinical biochemistry, gross necropsy and histopathology of vital organs were scrutinized in mice. Natural polysaccharides are attractive compounds with which to build scaffolds for bone and cartilage tissue engineering. Here we tested two non-standard ones, HE800 and GY785, for the two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) culture of osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) and chondrocytes (C28/I2). Antiviral activities of Radix Isatidis polysaccharide against type II herpes simplex virus in vitro Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.

Abstract This study investigated the antiviral activities of Radix Isatidis polysaccharide (RIP) against type II herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) in vitro. RIP was prepared from the Radix Isatidis root. The toxicity of RIP on Vero cells was detected. The direct killing effect of RIP on HSV-2, inhibitory effect of RIP on HSV-2 replication and inhibitory effect of RIP on HSV-2 adsorption were determined. Results showed that, RIP in concentration range of 25-800 mg/L had no toxic effect on Vero cells. RIP with different concentrations could not directly inactivate the HSV-2. ABSTRACT Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis is a type of red alga that contains seaweed polysaccharide agar. In this study, a novel non-agar seaweed polysaccharide fraction named GCP (short of crude polysaccharide obtained from Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis) was isolated from Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis. Structural analysis showed that GCP shows triple helical chain conformation when dissolved in water and has many branches and long side chains. In the marine environment, biofilm formation is an important lifestyle for microorganisms. Effect of an oversulfated exopolysaccharide on angiogenesis induced by fibroblast growth factor-2 or vascular endothelial growth factor in vitro ArchiMer

The aim of this study was to determine the angiogenic properties of an oversulfated exopolysaccharide (OS-EPS) derived from a polysaccharide secreted by the mesophilic bacterium Alteromonas infernus. We compared the effect of this OS-EPS with that of a non-oversulfated exopolysaccharide (EPS) on human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) proliferation, migration and differentiation induced by basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) or vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). OS-EPS enhanced HUVEC proliferation by 58% when used alone, and by respectively 30% and 70% in the presence of FGF-2 and VEGF. One hundred rats were randomly divided into control, model, and 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg SCP groups. Abstract This study investigated the effect of Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide (DOP) on the adipogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). AbstractThe extraction conditions (liquid-solid ratio, temperature and time) of antioxidant polysaccharides from Auricularia auricula fruiting bodies (AAFB) were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The Box-Behnken experimental results showed the optimum extraction conditions as follows: a liquid-solid ratio of 38.77 mL/g, a temperature of 93.98 °C and a time of 3.41 h. Under these conditions, the maximal polysaccharide yield was 10.46 g/100 g. In addition, AAFB polysaccharides exhibited stronger antioxidant activities by evaluating of Fe2+-chelating ability and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 0.43 and 0.38 mg/mL, respectively. Orthogonal design was employed to study the effect of extraction time, temperature and liquid-to-solid ratio on the production of antioxidant polysaccharides from leaves of Gynura bicolor (PLG). Analysis of variance was performed on the data obtained. The most relevant variable was extraction time. A liquid-solid ratio of 30:1 (v/w), a temperature of 80 °C and an extraction time of 3 h were found to be optimal for PLG. The present work evaluated the effects of freeze drying (FD), microwave drying (MD), and hot air drying (HAD) on shrinkage ratio, rehydration ratio, microstructure, polysaccharide and free amino acids of instant Tremella fuciformis. Abstract This study investigated the inhibitory effect of Dendrobium officinale polysaccharide (DOPA) on human gastric cancer cell SGC-7901 xenografts in nude mice. The nude mice with SGC-7901 xenografts were randomly divided into model, 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu), low-dose DOPA, middle-dose DOPA and high-dose DOPA group. The later four groups were intragastrically administrated with 100, 200 and 400 mg·kg–1·day–1 DOPA, 400 mg·kg–1·day–1 5-Fu and normal saline, respectively. Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine a suitable combination of the polysaccharide mesquite seed gum (MSG) and the protein Nile tilapia fish gelatin in the composite MSG/gelatin film for food packaging applications, and to evaluate the effect of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) on the film. MSG and gelatin were extracted from mesquite seeds and Nile tilapia residues, respectively, and the CNCs from mesquite pods by acid hydrolysis. The MSG:gelatin ratio with the best combination of tensile and barrier properties was used to produce the bionanocomposite films, by adding different CNC contents to the MSG/gelatin dispersion. Nitrogen consumption during batch cultivation of Neisseria meningitidis (serogroup C) in Frantz medium BJM

Capsular polysaccharide, extracted from microorganism cultivations, is the principal antigen for elaboration of vaccine against the disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C. The final protein content allowed in this vaccine is 1%. In order to find a relationship between nitrogen consumption and cell growth, including polysaccharide production, and cell nitrogen content, cultivations were carried out in an 80 liters bioreactor (total capacity), under the following conditions: Frantz medium; temperature of 35ºC; air flow of 5 L/min (0.125 vvm); agitation frequency of 120 rpm and vessel pressure of 6 psi (kLa = 0.07 min-1).
