A Bayesian state-space model to estimate population biomass with catch and limited survey data: application to the thornback ray (Raja clavata) in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer

The thornback ray (Raja clavata) in the Bay of Biscay is presumed to have declined during the 20th Century. To evaluate this decline and estimate biomass trajectories, a hypothetical catch time series was created for the period 1903-2013. A Bayesian state-space biomass production model with a Schaefer production function was fitted to the hypothetical catch time series and to a shorter research vessel Catch Per Unit Eeffort (CPUE) time series (1973-2013, with missing years). A censored likelihood made it possible to obtain biomass estimates without a CPUE time series or only with an estimate of biomass depletion. The ultimate purpose of this paper is to present a new analytical formulation to simulate diffusion with retention in a reactive medium under stable thermodynamic conditions. The analysis of diffusion with retention in a continuum medium is developed after the solution of an equivalent problem using a discrete approach. The new law may be interpreted as the reduction of all diffusion processes with retention to a unifying phenomenon that can adequately simulate the retention effect namely a circulatory motion. A preliminary analysis of death cause, capture-related mortality, and survival of adult red deer in northwestern Patagonia Ecología austral

The red deer (Cervus elaphus), among the world´s 14 most invasive exotic mammals, has recently arrived in Patagonia. Forty-seven deer were captured, marked with radio collars, and monitored in order to determine survival rates and identify causes of death. Net gunning from a helicopter allowed captures to be evenly distributed through the study area and in a timely manner. The absence of capture related mortality in our study agrees with previously reported low rates for this method. Animals were monitored for periods ranging from 5 to 2611 days. Ten animals provided censored values due to radio failures or being shot: they survived on average 811 days (SE = 221) after capture. Allee effect in exotic and introduced blowflies Neotropical Entomology

We combined two models to investigate the theoretical dynamics of five exotic and native blowfly species in response to the Allee effect by using demographic parameters estimated from experimental populations. Most of the results suggest stabilization of dynamic behavior in response to the Allee effect. However, the results depended on the magnitude of the demographic parameters of each species, and also indicated chaotic fluctuations and limit cycles. The results are discussed in the context of larval aggregation, an important biological process for blowflies, which naturally incorporates the Allee effect.

Los lenguados constituyen un importante recurso pesquero en el Mar Argentino. Más que en los volúmenes desembarcados (9 .731 t en 1991), esta importancia se centra en su elevado valor de comercialización debido a la alta calidad de su carne. Atendiendo a los desembarques totales realizados en el Mercado de Concentración Pesquera de Mar del Plata, los lenguados ocupan el octavo lugar. Estos desembarques están compuestos principalmente por especies de porte mediano a grande pertenecientes al género Paralichthys, y por ejemplares de tamaño mediano o pequeño de las especies Xystreuris rasile, y en menor proporción, Paralichthys isosceles. Application of deterministic model of isothermals for population dynamics of Synthesiomyia nudiseta (Diptera, Muscidae) BJB

The isothermal deterministic model adherence was studied to evaluate the population dinamic of Synthesiomyia nudiseta (Diptera, Muscidae). The linear form of equation obtained for the experiments in the several phases, were for Egg: 1/D = -0.18 + 0.02 . T; Larva: 1/D = -0.028 + 0.01. T; Pupa: 1/D = -0.069 + 0.01 . T; and Adult: 1/D = -0.4178 + 0.02 . T. In function of temperature, S. nudiseta can present from 4.18 to 8.95 and from 4.91 to 8.99 generations per year, when calculated through the equations of development and through the simulations, respectively. The detectability of invasive organisms influences the feasibility of eradicating an infestation. Search theory offers a framework for defining and measuring detectability, taking account of searcher ability, biological factors and the search environment. In this paper, search theory concepts are incorporated into a population model, and the costs of search and control are calculated as functions of the amount of search effort (the decision variable). Simulations are performed on a set of weed scenarios in a natural environment, involving different combinations of plant longevity, seed longevity and plant fecundity. Despite the great diversity of Brazilian Atlantic forest small mammals, natural history of most species is unknown due to their cryptic and nocturnal habits, but also due to the inadequacy of methods to capture some species, especially those of arboreal habits. A new technique, based on the use of artificial nests (AN) to record arboreal marsupials, is presented. Artificial nests were combined with traditional live traps to study the population ecology of four didelphid marsupial species. RESUMO: Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a influência de sistemas de preparo de solo e de rotação de culturas e pastagem na abundância e dinâmica de artrópodes edáficos. O experimento, instalado em Planaltina, DF, foi composto por 17 tratamentos que corresponderam a sistemas de preparo de solo (convencional e direto) e a rotação de culturas, pastagem e vegetação nativa (Cerrado). Realizaram-se amostragens de solo em três profundidades (0-5 cm, 5-10 cm e 10-20 cm) e em quatro épocas do ano (fevereiro, maio, agosto/setembro e outubro/novembro) entre 2003 e 2006. Mytilopsis sallei es una especie que se encuentra ampliamente distribuida sobre sustratos duros en la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, siendo particularmente abundante sobre bancos de ostra de mangle (Crassostrea rhizophorae), donde alcanza densidades de hasta 5000 indiv/m2. Aunque posee una amplia tolerancia a variaciones en la salinidad y temperatura, prefiere aquellos lugares donde la afluencia de aguas dulces es constante. Climate change exposes benthic species populations in coastal ecosystems to a combination of different stressors (e.g. warming, acidification and eutrophication), threatening the sustainability of the ecological functions they provide. Both old and new information on the biology and ecology of Atlantic bluefin tuna have confronted scientists with research challenges: research needs to be connected to current stock-assessment and management issues. We review recent studies on habitat, migrations and population structure, stressing the importance of electronic tagging results in the modification of our perception of bluefin tuna population dynamics and behaviour. Beroe ovata впервые отмечен у побережья Северного Кавказа в августе 1997 г. Численность его была значительна, в то время как популяция другого гребневика - Mnemiopsis leidyi -была заметно угнетена. В настоящей работе рассмотрены изменения плотности популяции и среднего размера тела В. ovata в связи с выеданием им пищи - мнемиопсиса - с 1997 по 2000 гг.
