All known species of the sponge family Chalinidae (Demospongiae, Haplosclerida) occurring in the shallower part of the Caribbean are described and taxonomically revised. The study is the result of collecting activities of the author and others throughout the Caribbean, and examination of type and other material in musea and institutes. In a previous revision of north-eastern Atlantic Chalinidae (De Weerdt, 1986, 1989), the family was subdivided into eight monophyletic species groups, with various states of the skeletal architecture as main synapomorphous (shared derived) characters. A new sponge species, Cladocroce burapha n. sp. (Chalinidae, Haplosclerida, Porifera), is described from Chonburi province, eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand, Thailand. The new species can be separated from other Cladocroce species by a combination of characters, including growth form, form and size of the spicules, and habitat. This is the first record of the genus Cladocroce from Thailand. |

Recent (1998) collecting off the coasts of Oman in the course of the EC-MAS3 funded ‘Symbiosponge’ project yielded three species of the genus Biemna Gray, 1867 (Demospongiae, Poecilosclerida, Mycalina, Desmacellidae) not previously known from the area. One of these appeared to be new to science and is described as Biemna omanensis n.sp.. Its distinguishing features comprise the possession of oxea megascleres, which is of rare occurrence in Biemna, and a full complement of microscleres including microxeas, sigmas, commata, all of which are divisible in two non-overlapping size categories, and raphides. A new species, Erylus soesti n. sp. is described from SE Brazil. This study is part of an ongoing revision of genus Erylus Gray, 1867 (Mothes, Lerner & Da Silva, 1999; Mothes & Lerner, 1999) and adds a further brazilian species to the genus. This new species can be distinguished by the possession of dichotriaenes, oxeas, and peculiar cushion-like aspidasters with extremely irregular outline, microspined microstrongyles and sphaeroxyasters. A key for identification of brazilian species is provided. |

In this paper we describe Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. (Porifera: Demospongiae: Hadromerida: Suberitidae) from four enclosed anchialine lakes located in Indonesia and from a confined system in Singapore. Initially this species was thought to be specific to anchialine lakes, but further comparison to coastal areas indicated that it is more widespread in inshore systems. We have used morphological characters to distinguish this species and a molecular marker to confirm that all types are the same species. A new sponge species Amphimedon denhartogi spec. nov., belonging to the family Niphatidae of the order Haplosclerida, is described from 3 localities in Indonesia: Tulamben (NE Bali), Siladen Island (NE Sulawesi) and Kambing Island (SW Sulawesi). Amphimedon denhartogi spec. nov. is characterised by its growth form of thinly flabellate branches, the occurrence of star-shaped oscules over one side of the sponge body, and by its small strongyles, and can hardly be confused with another species. All specimens were found in similar habitats, at around 40-45 m of depth on steep sandy slopes. |

ABSTRACT Although antibiotic-resistant pathogens pose a significant threat to human health, the environmental reservoirs of the resistance determinants are still poorly understood. This study reports the detection of resistance genes (ermB, mecA, mupA, qnrA, qnrB and tetL) to antibiotics among certain culturable and unculturable bacteria associated with the marine sponge Petromica citrina. The antimicrobial activities elicited by P. citrina and its associated bacteria are also described. The results indicate that the marine environment could play an important role in the development of antibiotic resistance and the dissemination of resistance genes among bacteria. |

A new species of a very thinly encrusting Desmacella (Porifera, Demospongiae, Poecilosclerida, Desmacellidae) is described from Queen Charlotte Basin and Georgia Basin, off the Canadian Pacific coast. It is compared with all known species of the genus, differing in the geometry and size of spicules, and the persistent epizoic growth. |

El costado noroccidental del Golfo de Urabá en el sur del Mar Caribe alberga variadas zonas coralinas sometidas a condiciones de alta turbulencia y salinidad y turbidez fluctuantes. Allí se estudió la composición y densidad de esponjas marinas (Porifera) y se analizó su relación con factores físicos y características estructurales de las zonas coralinas. En total, 65 especies de la clase Demospongiae y una especie de la clase Calcarea fueron registradas dentro de transectos de banda (20 m²) dispuestos en 11 estaciones entre 1 y 17 m de profundidad. ABSTRACT Marine sponges fulfill many critical functions to coral reefs. In turn, variations in the community structure of the poriferans may indicate changes in the environmental conditions of the ecosystems where they live. However, their study has been scarce in the Caribbean of Costa Rica, mainly in the ecological field.
