ABSTRACT In the biennium 2013-14, the world produced 1,134.27 million tons of vegetables annually. The production of garlic, onion, potato, tomato and watermelon accounted for 66.5% of the total. Brazil, in 2012, considering 40 vegetables, produced around 23 million tons, in 900.0 thousand hectares. Potatoes, tomatoes (table and processing), onions, watermelons, carrots, sweet potatoes, lettuce and cabbage, the main vegetables in Brazil, accounted for 64.0% of the total. This work presents the evolution of production, commercialization, and availability of garlic, onions, potatoes, tomatoes and watermelons in Brazil and in the world. In Brazil, the work focused on two distinct periods: 1970-1990 {when the Support Program for Production and... |

This study determined the factors (related to fixed and variable transaction costs) influencing the decision to participate in sweet potato markets by a random sample of 320 small holder farmers in south eastern Nigeria. Data were collected with structured and validated questionnaire, and analyzed using the ordered probit analysis procedure. Participation decisions revealed that marketing experience, farm size, membership of cooperatives/social organizations, extension contact, farming experience and road conditions to the nearest town had positive relationship with decision to be autarkic other than buyer and to be seller other than autarkic, and were significant at 1% level of probability. The coefficient of age, household size, and output were also... |

Abstract The number of attributes, related to the selection of potato varieties, was evaluated with reference to their potential in chip processing. Five commercial varieties of potato were analyzed regarding their physico-chemical, functional, and processing aspects. In general, Lady Rosetta subsequently, Chipsona were the most noticeable potato varieties considering their physical attributes. A significant correlation (R = 0.925) was estimated amongst geometric mean diameter and surface area. Maximum dry matter and starch contents were observed in Lady Rosetta followed by Chipsona. Desiree showed higher fat, sugar and mineral contents than all other selected potato cultivars. Promising correlation (R= 0.952) was estimated among total minerals and ash... |

The effect of drying behaviour on the drying rate and quality characteristics of potato slices in a vacuum-infrared drying system was studied. In this research, the effect of the infrared radiation powers (100, 150, and 200 W) and vacuum levels (20, 80, 140 mmHg and atmosphere pressure) at different slice thickness (1, 2 and 3 mm) on drying rate and shrinkage percentage and rehydration capacity were investigated. It was concluded that infrared radiation power amount has a significant effect on processing time and drying rate. With increasing radiation power, drying time is reduced and consequently drying rate is increased. The drying rate curve of potato slices at initial drying time is in the ascending phase because of surface moisture evaporation and... |

ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the colchicine and oryzalin anti-mitotic substances on the induction of tetraploid plants and foliar anatomy of two diploids clones of Solanum commersonii ssp. Nodal segments of Solanum commersonii subsp. commersonii Dun. and Solanum commersonii subsp. malmeanum Bitt. were treated with colchicine (3.5, 5.0, and 6.5mM; 72h) or oryzalin (10, 30, and 50µM; 24h). After the treatment with anti-mitotic substances, nodal segments were inoculated in the MS culture medium and cultivated in vitro (60 days). After in vitro cultivation, the plants were transferred to vases with the substrate Plantmax(r) and kept in the greenhouse (45 days). Plant ploidy level was assessed by flow cytometry and leaf... |

The decision to fall or spring bed potatoes is often dictated by weather and processor contract agreements. Although there are advantages to both fall an( spring bedding, soil conditions are often wet in the spring in Malheur County, Oregon. Spring bedding of wet soils leads to soil compaction and decreased water infiltration. The primary objective of the study was to determine the effects of fall or spring bedding on tuber yields and quality under furrow irrigation. Determining the most effective method of fall potato ground preparation was the second objective of the trial. Land for potato production is normally moldboard plowed in the fall. Chisel plowing may provide better placement of residues in bedded ground and thus promote higher... |

This bulletin provides an overview of trends in cropland values in Canada. Cropland values are a major component of farm wealth which, together with income can be used as a measure of the economic well-being of farm households. Cropland values are provided for a 3-year period, 2005-2007, for each province and farm type (beef, hog, poultry and egg, dairy, grain and oilseed, potato, greenhouse, and fruit and vegetable farms). |
