An exploration of the potential benefits of integrated pest management systems and the use of insect resistant potatoes to control the Guatemalan Tuber Moth (Tecia solanivora Povolny) in Ventaquemada, Colombia AgEcon
Falck-Zepeda, Jose Benjamin; Barreto-Triana, Nancy; Baquero-Haeberlin, Irma; Espitia-Malagon, Eduardo; Fierro-Guzman, Humberto; Lopez, Nancy.
CORPOICA and IFPRI implemented a research project in Ventaquemada, Colombia. The project’s goal was to asses the benefits of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and the potential of Genetically Modified insect resistant (Bt) potatoes to manage damage caused by the Guatemalan Tuber Moth (Tecia solanivora Povolny). The Guatemalan Tuber Moth is particularly destructive because field spraying on the adult stage is ineffective and there exists damage specificity to the tubers. Excessive pesticide sprays have resulted in resistance to several insecticides. Insect resistant (Bt) potatoes has been shown an effective means to control other members of the Tuber Moth complex. Thus a Bt potato may play a role in managing Tecia in Colombia. This is an ex ante...

Analysis of the Constraints to the Development of a Domestic Improved Seed Potato Industry in Mali AgEcon
Diallo, Marthe.
This paper outlines proposed research, using concepts of New Institutional Economics, to identify the factors constraining the emergence of a market for domestically produced improved seed potatoes in Mali. It uses the Principal –Agent model to outline how to investigate the feasibility of developing a domestic seed potato industry in Mali by applying the concepts of efficient contract designs and other institutional arrangements. This research will contribute to the literature on: (a) contract and institutional design in the context of asymmetric information and uncertainty typical of agricultural markets in low-income countries and (b) design of improved seed production systems, particularly for clonal crops, in developing countries. The Malian potato...

Collective Action for Innovation and Small Farmer Market Access: The Papa Andina Experience AgEcon
Devaux, Andre; Velasco, Claudio; Lopez, Gaston; Bernet, Thomas; Ordinola, Miguel; Pico, Hernan; Thiele, Graham; Horton, Douglas.
The Andean highlands are home to some of the poorest rural households in South America. Native potato varieties and local knowledge for their cultivation and use are unique resources possessed by farmers in these areas. As the forces of globalization and market integration penetrate the Andes, they present both challenges and opportunities for farmers there. This paper reports on how the Papa Andina Regional Initiative is promoting the use of collective action to reduce poverty in the Andes, by developing market niches and adding value to potatoes, particularly the native potatoes grown by poor farmers. Since 1998, Papa Andina has worked with partners in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru to stimulate pro-poor innovation within market chains for potato-based...

Comparing Parts with the Whole: Willingness to Pay for Pesticide-Free, Non-GM, and Organic Potatoes and Sweet Corn AgEcon
Bernard, John C.; Bernard, Daria J..
Auction experiments were used to investigate demand relationships and willingness to pay (WTP) for four versions of potatoes and sweet corn—conventional, organic, and two parts of organic: no pesticides and non-genetically modified (non-GM). Elasticities showed strong and asymmetric substitute relationships between organic and its parts. Combined premiums of the parts were not significantly different than the whole organic premium, suggesting WTP for the attributes are not additive. A two-stage heteroskedastic tobit model found significant WTP for each part dependent on demographics and beliefs about conventional versions. Results suggest segments for parts of organic could be established alongside the whole.

Consumer Willingness to Pay for Genetically Modified Food Labels in a Market with Diverse Information: Evidence from Experimental Auctions AgEcon
Huffman, Wallace E.; Shogren, Jason F.; Rousu, Matthew C.; Tegene, Abebayehu.
With the continuing controversy over genetically modified (GM) foods, some groups advocate mandatory labeling of these products, while other groups oppose labeling. An important issue is how GM labels affect consumers' willingness to pay for these food products in the market. Using a statistically based economics experiment with adult consumers as subjects, we examine how willingness to pay changes for three food products--vegetable oil, tortilla chips, and potatoes--when GM labels are introduced. Participants in the experiments discounted GM-labeled foods by approximately 14% relative to their standard-labeled counterparts. The evidence also showed that sequencing of food labels affects willingness to pay, and that randomizing treatments is an important...

Demand for High-value Secondary Crops in Developing Countries: The Case of Potatoes in Bangladesh and Pakistan AgEcon
Bouis, Howarth E.; Scott, Gregory.
Secondary crops are of increasing interest to policymakers and planners in developing countries because of a desire to diversify economic activities and because of their proven potential to raise farm incomes and rural employment. To assess this potential, basic information on the demand characteristics for these crops is required. But, given the large number of possible crops to be studied, policy analysts require an estimation procedure that is less data-intensive and time-intensive than standard econometric estimation procedures. In this paper, a relatively new, low-cost procedure, based on demand for food characteristics, is applied, illustrating its usefulness for analysis of demand for potatoes in Bangladesh and Pakistan. In Asia, the potato should...

Disease Outbreaks and Agricultural Trade: The Case of Potatoes AgEcon
Clark, J. Stephen; Thibodeau, David R.; Grant, K. Gary; Prochazkova, Katerina.
This study analyzed the impact of PVYn and potato wart disease outbreaks in PEI on the potato industry. These disease outbreaks resulted in the loss of the US seed export market to PEI producers. The effects of the disease outbreaks were mitigated through value-added processing. Price premiums for processed potatoes allowed PEI potato producers to abandon seed exports without incurring losses. Evidence is presented to suggest that other countries have also used this approach when export restrictions were placed on domestic agricultural industries. Policy response to the two disease outbreaks include: i) development of a zones policy that helped to reopen markets into the US; and ii) financial compensation to producers above the minimum levels required...

Evolucao da doenca olho-preto em tuberculos de batata armazenados. Repositório Alice
LIMA, M. F.; LOPES, C. A..
A conservacao a 4oC nao impediu o...

First report of Phytophthora infestans self fertile genotypes in southern Brazil Repositório Alice
CASA-COILA, V. H.; LEHNER, M. S.; HORA JUNIOR, B. T.; REIS, A.; NAZARENO, N. R. X.; MIZUBUTI, E. S. G.; GOMES, C. B..
During the autumn of 2011 and 2012, leaf and stem samples of potato plants infected with P. infestans were collected in southern Brazil. Monosporangial isolates of P. infestans were obtained from the samples and mating types were determined. Each isolate was paired with the A2 and A1 mating types of P. infestans and self-paired on Petri plates containingV8 juice agar. After this, the plates were kept at 18°C in darkness for 20 days. Three isolates collected in Paraná State (municipalities of Ponta Grossa 25°12′26″S, 50°07′11″W; Contenda 25°38′52″S, 49°34′26″W; and Castro 24°51′50″S, 49°53′50″W) formed oospores when paired with both mating...
