Agro-morphological characterization of upland rice accessions Scientia Agricola
Nascimento,Wellington Ferreira do; Silva,Edson Ferreira da; Veasey,Elizabeth Ann.
The agro-morphological characterization is fundamental in order to provide information for plant breeding programs. The aim of the present study was to characterize 146 accessions of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.), based on qualitative and quantitative agro-morphological descriptors. The experiment was conducted in Recife, state of Pernambuco, Brazil, using a randomized block design with three replicates. Polymorphism was observed among 12 of 14 qualitative characters evaluated, whereas significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed for 11 of the 14 analysed quantitative traits. Genetic variance was higher than environmental variance and the average inheritability coefficients were above 80 % for all characters, which ensures the predominance of the...

Characterization of Capsicum germplasm collected in Northwestern Argentina based on morphological and quality traits Agriscientia (Córdoba)
Occhiuto,P.N; Peralta,I.E; Asprelli,P.D; Galmarini,C.R.
Paprika production is concentrated in Northwestern Argentina, where around 1500 ha are annually grown. Farmers mainly from Andean valleys, maintain their local landraces or “criollas” under different environmental conditions, using their farming traditions and selection criteria. These traditional varieties represent valuable genetic resources for conservation and selection of agronomical and quality traits. Between 2005 and 2007 eight collecting trips were made to Northwestern Argentina in order to recover local germplasm. As a result, five hundred new vegetable seed samples have been incorporated into the Germplasm Bank. Among these accessions 32 belong to Capsicum, the majority for paprika production, that were evaluated in field...

Characterization of diploid Arachis interspecific hybrids for pest resistance Bragantia
Paula,Ailton Ferreira de; Dinato,Naiana Barbosa; Vigna,Bianca Baccili Zanotto; Fávero,Alessandra Pereira.
ABSTRACT In Brazil, the thrips (Enneothrips flavens Moulton) and rednecked peanutworm (Stegasta bosquella Chambers) are considered key pests for the peanut crop. Wild species show resistance to both of these pests, and can be used in breeding programs. The production of the sterile interspecific hybrids is necessary, which could be colchicine treated to get a synthetic amphidiploid with the same or similar genomic configuration of cultivated peanut. In this context, this study proposed the hybridization of wild pest-resistant species in 18 distinct combinations, obtaining the interspecific hybrids of Arachis and completing their characterization by (i) the reproductive characterization through pollen stainability with 2% acetocarmine (AC) solution with...

Genetic divergence among processing tomato hybrids and formation of new segregating populations Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Figueiredo,Alex Sandro Torre; Resende,Juliano Tadeu Vilela de; Schwarz,Kélin; Marodin,Josué Clock; Galvão,Alexandre Gonçalves; Resende,Nathalia Campos Vilela.
ABSTRACT Tomato is the most important vegetable species and has a strong bottleneck effect in its domestication and evolution. In exploring the existing genetic variability in commercial germplasm, germplasm has been proven to be an excellent alternative to obtain inbred lines in order to provide superior new hybrids in the future. In this sense, the objective of this study was to estimate the genetic distance among commercial processing tomato hybrids via agronomical and quality postharvest fruit traits with the aim of suggesting promising crosses for the formation of base populations for tomato breeding. Ten hybrids of processing tomato were evaluated in a complete randomized block design with three replicates. In total, eleven agronomic and postharvest...

Araújo,Cecilia MM; Silva Filho,Danilo F; Ticona-Benavente,César Augusto; Batista,Manoel Ronaldo A.
ABSTRACT Murupi chili pepper is a hot Amazonian pepper that has been used as flavoring in the region, yet its diversity is unknown. This paper aims to assess the diversity in 20 landraces from Peruvian, Colombian, and Brazilian Amazon. The experiment was installed in Manaus-AM, using a randomized complete block design with three replicates and five plants per plot. Analyses of variance showed significant differences for all nine descriptors. Fruit yield showed, in average, to be 208.08 fruits per plant, tantamount to 381.44 g per plant. Given 50% of relative distances estimated by generalized Mahalanobis distances and, nearest neighbor clustering, they displayed six groups. Cluster I comprised 50% of the landraces. Clusters IV, V and VI were represented by...

Pre-breeding: a link between genetic resources and maize breeding Scientia Agricola
Nass,Luciano Lourenço; Paterniani,Ernesto.
Activities related to genetic resources are characterized by high cost and long term return. Thus the conservation of genetic variability for the future and the efficient utilization of available accessions are two important goals to be attained. However, the low utilization of germplasm banks is not restricted to Brazil but to other developing countries as well. Therefore, pre-breeding is a promising alternative to link genetic resources and breeding programs. Several aspects for maize are discussed such as concept, importance, methods and results. Problems to be investigated and suggestions are also presented.

Sources of resistance against the Pepper yellow mosaic virus in chili pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Bento,Cíntia dos S; Rodrigues,Rosana; Zerbini Júnior,Francisco Murilo; Sudré,Cláudia P.
The Pepper yellow mosaic virus (PepYMV) naturally infects chili and sweet pepper, as well as tomato plants in Brazil, leading to severe losses. This work reports the reaction to the PepYMV of 127 Capsicum spp. accessions, aiming at identifying resistance sources useful in breeding programs. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, with eight replications, in greenhouse conditions. Plants were protected with an insect-proof screen to avoid virus dissemination by aphids. Leaves of Nicotiana debneyi infected with the PepYMV were used as the inoculum source. Plants were inoculated with three to four fully expanded leaves. A second inoculation was done 48 hours later to avoid escapes. Only the youngest fully expanded leaf was...

Synthesis of a base population of Habanero pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Nass,Luciano L; Souza,Karina RR; Ribeiro,Claudia SC; Reifschneider,Francisco JB.
ABSTRACT: The establishment of populations with ample genetic variability and their use in breeding programs are discussed based on the Capsicum breeding program at Embrapa. Thirty-one accessions of "Habanero" pepper from different origins present in the Capsicum Active Germplasm Bank (AGB) of Embrapa Vegetables were used to establish a base population. The base population of "Habanero" was formed by an equal mixture of F2 seeds from all crosses obtained, using a fixed weight (1 g) per cross, which is close to 150 seeds per genotype. This balanced population was introduced in theCapsicum AGB as CNPH 15,469. There are several possibilities to explore this variability, such as the use of base population as source of inbred lines; the use of base population...

The strawberry is an important agricultural crop in Brazil. However, most of the commercial genotypes currently in cultivation in Brazil were developed in other countries with environmental adaptations often inadequate for the regional conditions. In this work, inter-simple sequence repeat markers were used to determine the genetic variability and the loci segregation profiles of 84 strawberry hybrids obtained from a genetic breeding program at the ‘Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais.’ The hybrids were produced from crosses involving the following progenitors: ‘Toyonoka’ x ‘Sweet Charlie’, ‘Camino Real’ x ‘Sweet Charlie’, ‘Oso Grande’ x ‘Sweet Charlie’, ‘Oso Grande’ x ‘Toyonoka’, ‘Dover’ x ‘Oso Grande’, and ‘Camino Real’ x ‘Toyonoka’....
