A benthic Si mass balance on the Congo margin: Origin of the 4000 m DSi anomaly and implications for the transfer of Si from land to ocean 5
Ragueneau, O.; Regaudie-de-gioux, A.; Moriceau, B.; Gallinari, M.; Vangriesheim, Annick; Baurand, F.; Khripounoff, Alexis.
To elucidate the origin of the silicic acid (DSi) anomaly observed along the 4000 isobath on the Congo margin, we have established a benthic Si mass balance and performed direct measurements of biogenic silica (bSiO(2)) dissolution in the deep waters and in the sediments. Results strongly suggest that the anomaly originates from the sediments; the intensity of DSi recycling is consistent with the degradation of organic matter, as observed from Si:O-2 ratios in the benthic fluxes compared to that ratio observed in the anomalies. Strong imbalances, observed in both the Si and C mass balances, suggest that the biogenic matter that degrades and dissolves in these sediments near 4000 m does not come from pelagic sedimentation. It is probably not coming also...

A QUESTÃO AMBIENTAL: FLORESTAS E BIODIVERSIDADE 25
Bertolino, Maria Lúcia.
This work has as objective to argue the environmental question concerning the conservation of the forests and biodiversity. One major issue in this question is that the Brazilian forest sector contributes with an important parcel for the Brazilian economy, generates products for direct consumption or for exportation, generates taxes and jobs for the population and, still, bring positive and negative consequences in the conservation and preservation of both renewable and not renewable natural resources. The forest economy has been, historically, responsible for one of the five largest positive commercial balances of the country and still it supplies 85% of all the products of forest origin found in the national market, therefore, alleviating the pressure on...

An Improved Protocol for Flow Cytometry Analysis of Phytoplankton Cultures and Natural Samples 5
Marie, Dominique; Rigaut-jalabert, Fabienne; Vaulot, Daniel.
Preservation of cells, choice of fixative, storage, and thawing conditions are recurrent issues for the analysis of phytoplankton by flow cytometry. We examined the effects of addition of the surfactant Pluronic F68 to glutaraldehyde-fixed photosynthetic organisms in cultures and natural samples. In particular, we examined cell losses and modifications of side scatter (a proxy of cell size) and fluorescence of natural pigments. We found that different marine phytoplankton species react differently to the action of Pluronic F68. In particular, photosynthetic prokaryotes are less sensitive than eukaryotes. Observed cell losses may result from cell lysis or from cell adhesion to the walls of plastic tubes that are commonly used for flow cytometry analysis....

Application of active films with natural extract for beef hamburger preservation 65
Lagos,Maria Jeannine Bonilla; Sobral,Paulo José do Amaral.
ABSTRACT: Edible chitosan-based films, in pure form (CH100), or blended with gelatin (GEL50:CH50), with and without boldo extract (B) were prepared. The oxygen permeability of the films, as well as color changes and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities on beef hamburgers samples were evaluated. CH100+B film exhibited optimal oxygen barrier properties (6.40±0.170cc-mL/[m²-day]), and this value was significantly increased in blended films (GEL50:CH50+B = 12.99±1.50cc-mL/[m²-day]) (P<0.05). All films provoked color changes in hamburger samples during storage, and the samples covered with CH100+B film showed a lower brightness and a higher redness. All films effectively protected beef hamburger from lipid oxidation, and boldo extract incorporation in...

Cats with orthopedic conditions are a prominent part of the clinical work of veterinary. Conditions such as comminuted fractures, bone tumors and non-unions are often difficult to repair and may require the use of bone grafts for treatment. This study evaluated cortical bone allografts preserved in honey, frozen or lyophilized for correcting long bone defects created in the diaphysis of the right femur of domestic cats (n=24). In the control group (n=6), the defect was repaired using autogenous cortical bone graft. In the remaining animals (n=6/group), the defect was repaired with cortical bone allografts preserved in honey, frozen or lyophilized. Success of graft incorporation and length of time for consolidation were assessed through clinical,...

Conservation des laminaires apres sechage a tres hautes temperatures. 5
Perez, René.
Laminaria digitata is the only brown alga used in the French alginate industry. Air-dried and flash-dried (in a current of air at 200 to 850 degree C) algae were compared. Quality was assessed viscometrically and the results expressed graphically. Quality after drying and keeping properties were found better in flash-dried algae and the method was shown to be the cheapest of methods currently available.

CARVALHO, A. P. F. de; CARVALHO JÚNIOR, O. A. de; LEITE, L. L.; GUIMARÃES, R. F.; MARTINS, E. de S..
ABSTRACT: The permanent preservation areas were created to protect the environment, decreasing processes as erosion often caused by anthropic interferences. The Brazilian Forest Law stablished criteria to the delimitation of these areas. An area zoning presents special areas where permanent preservation areas are inclued. This way, in the present paper was performed the mapping of the permanent preservation areas in order to accomplish the future zoning of the watershed called Basin of stream of Gama. According to the Federal Law, permanent preservation areas on this watershed were found along rivers margins and their streams and plateau's edges. The mapping of these areas was performed by means of the IDRISI software using to the delimitation of the...

Deshidratador solar para productos agrícolas. 32

Dual-stage sugar substitution in Tommy Atkins mango 91
Medeiros,Rafael A. B. de; Barros,Zilmar M. P.; Carvalho,Carlos B. O. de; Coêlho,Antonio C. D.; Maciel,Maria I. S.; Azoubel,Patricia M..
ABSTRACT The dual-stage sugar substitution technique (D3S) was used to induce sugar replacement in mango. It involved two stages, in which high-calorie sugars were partially removed from the fruit samples in the first stage and, in the second one, low-calorie sugar was incorporated into the mango. Ultrasonic waves can be applied in one or both stages and their use was also evaluated in this study. Results showed that submitting samples to ultrasonic waves (25 kHz) in both stages and their immersion in Stevia-based solution (250 or 500 g kg-1) in the second stage for 10, 20 and 30 min of processing gave higher water loss during the process, while greater solids gain could be achieved by applying ultrasound only in the first stage. Samples were also...

Effect of lactic acid bacteria on extention of shelf life and growth of Listeria monocytogenes in beef steaks stored in CO2- rich atmosphere 58
Djenane,Djamel; Martínez,Luis; Blanco,Domingo; Yangüela,Javier; Beltrán,José A.; Roncalés,Pedro.
Beef steaks were inoculated with one or other of two protective strains of lactic acid bacteria (bacteriocinogenic Lactobacillus sakei CTC 372 or the uncharacterized Lactobacillus CTC 711), and stored under modified atmospheres (20-40% CO2). Inoculation of meat with LAB inhibited growth of the spoilage bacteria. Neither CO2 in the pack atmosphere or inoculation with protective strains, nor a combination of both, affected formation of metmyoglobin or the development of off-odours. The formation of metmyoglobin in meat pigments and the sensory odour scores were compatible to those of fresh meat which had not undergone either oxidative deterioration or microbial spoilage. Listeria monocytogenes was inhibited in broth by meat surface microbiota containing the...

Effects of high pressure on texture and microstructure of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) fillets 5
Cheret, Romuald; Chapleau, Nicolas; Delbarre Ladrat, Christine; Verrez-bagnis, Veronique; De Lamballerie, Marie.
High pressure is an innovative non-thermal food-preservation technology. We studied the effect of high-pressure treatment up-to 500 MPa for 5 min on physical characteristics of sea bass fillets after 0, 7, and 14 d of refrigerated storage.. Color results exhibited an increase of lightness and a slight change of hue, which might be imperceptible in cooked fish. High-pressure treatment induced a decrease of exudation and water-holding capacity Pressure treatment above 300 MPa provoked higher fish hardness after storage than in untreated sample, proving the ability of high pressure to improve textural, quality of chilled, stored fish fillet. These assessments were corroborated with microstructure observations. We showed that high-pressure treatment at 500 MPa...

Evaluation of glycerin as preserving agent of chicken serum for plate agglutination test 89
Freitas,ES de; Soldá,A; Calegari,DL; Munaretto,FC; Dietrich,GF; Back,A.
Serum is widely used for the purpose of monitoring and diagnosis support for most of poultry diseases. In the case of the serum plate agglutination test (SPA), commonly used to detect antibodies for Salmonella Pullorum (SP), Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and Mycoplasma synoviae (MS), serum cannot be frozen because it may result in false positive. Without freezing, serum can last only for a few days. In this experiment, glycerin was evaluated as a serum preservering agent. About 50 samples for each disease and analyzed by SPA test previously were separated. Glycerin was added to serum from commercial chickens, with and without antibodies for SP, MG and MS, in the proportion of 1:1 (serum:glycerin) and kept at refrigerated conditions (2 to 8 ºC). For four...
