In the past two decades, the Argo Program has collected, processed, and distributed over two million vertical profiles of temperature and salinity from the upper two kilometers of the global ocean. A similar number of subsurface velocity observations near 1,000 dbar have also been collected. This paper recounts the history of the global Argo Program, from its aspiration arising out of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, to the development and implementation of its instrumentation and telecommunication systems, and the various technical problems encountered. We describe the Argo data system and its quality control procedures, and the gradual changes in the vertical resolution and spatial coverage of Argo data from 1999 to 2019. The accuracies of the...

Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Brun, Melanie; Siano, Raffaele; Delmas, Daniel.
This deliverable is composed of two reports which propose indice of phytoplankton composition, based respectively on the results of pigment and genetic diversity methods, and the results of microscopy method. Proposals based on the results of pigment and genetic diversity methods. The present work is a continuation of several studies carried out in the past (Siano and Delmas, 2013, 2015) on investigating an indicator of phytoplankton diversity using two methods complementary to optical microscopy: the genetic diversity analyzed with metabarcoding (exhaustive analysis of the diversity and relative abundance of OTUs, i.e. groups of sequences identified by their genetic resemblance) and the pigmentary diversity (analysis of the diversity and abundance of...

Differences in pressure and temperature transitions of proteins and polymer gels BJMBR
Kunugi,S.; Kameyama,K.; Tada,T.; Tanaka,N.; Shibayama,M.; Akashi,M..
Pressure-driven and temperature-driven transitions of two thermoresponsive polymers, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) and poly(N-vinylisobutyramide) (pNVIBA)), in both a soluble linear polymer form and a cross-linked hydro-gel form, were examined by a dynamic light-scattering method and direct microscopic observation, respectively. Their behavior was compared with that of protein systems. Changes in some characteristic parameters in the time-intensity correlation functions of dynamic light-scattering measurement of aqueous solutions of pNIPAM at various pressures and temperatures showed no essential differences during temperature and pressure scanning and, as a whole, the motions of polymers in aqueous solutions were similar in two types of transitions...

Essai de caractérisation sous pression de panneaux en composites pour structures marines ArchiMer
Reichard, R.
Traditional testing of FRP sandwich panels using uniaxial loading provides useful data for structural designers, but these tests do not work well for multiaxially reinforced laminates or for sandwich laminates. Sandwich laminates are generally used to increase the flexural properties of a panel. Flexural testing of sandwich beams does not address panel membrane effects, which can be significant. As a result, a number of different methods have been developed for testing panels. Experiments with multiaxial FRP sandwich panels have been conducted to evaluate the behavior of panel laminates with various fiber orientations and core materials under both static pressure loading and hydrodynamic shock loading. The test apparatus and methods are described, and the...

Modeling the pressure inactivation dynamics of Escherichia coli BJMBR
Yamamoto,K.; Matsubara,M.; Kawasaki,S.; Bari,M.L.; Kawamoto,S..
Escherichia coli, as a model microorganism, was treated in phosphate-buffered saline under high hydrostatic pressure between 100 and 300 MPa, and the inactivation dynamics was investigated from the viewpoint of predictive microbiology. Inactivation data were curve fitted by typical predictive models: logistic, Gompertz and Weibull functions. Weibull function described the inactivation curve the best. Two parameters of Weibull function were calculated for each holding pressure and their dependence on holding pressure was obtained by interpolation. With the interpolated parameters, inactivation curves were simulated and compared with the experimental data sets.

Some physico-chemical parameters that influence proteinase K resistance and the infectivity of PrP Sc after high pressure treatment BJMBR
Heindl,P.; Fernández García,A.; Büttner,M.; Voigt,H.; Butz,P.; Tauscher,B.; Pfaff,E..
Crude brain homogenates of terminally diseased hamsters infected with the 263 K strain of scrapie (PrP Sc) were heated and/or pressurized at 800 MPa at 60ºC for different times (a few seconds or 5, 30, 120 min) in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) of different pH and concentration. Prion proteins were analyzed on immunoblots for their proteinase K (PK) resistance, and in hamster bioassays for their infectivity. Samples pressurized under initially neutral conditions and containing native PrP Sc were negative on immunoblots after PK treatment, and a 6-7 log reduction of infectious units per gram was found when the samples were pressurized in PBS of pH 7.4 for 2 h. A pressure-induced change in the protein conformation of native PrP Sc may lead to less PK...

Static tests of constructive tires using hydraulic press on the soil REA
Machado,Thiago M.; Lanças,Kléber P.; Oliveira Junior,Mauro B. de; Artioli,José A.; Marasca,Indiamara.
ABSTRACT The power consumption and load capacity of agricultural machines have grown and the effects of pressure on the soil by tires have been still little investigated. In concern with sustainable development, the relationship machine-tire-soil must be in balance to give more consistency on the best use of tires for a given load. This study aimed to evaluate four tires of two constructive types, the bias belted tires and radial tires, both with respective rim diameters of 22.5 and 26.5 inches with variables measuring the footprint, elastic deformation, sinkage and resistance to penetration. A hydraulic press with an attachment shaft for tire mounting and a box of soil in which the tire has been imposed on a load of 53.00 kN using nominal pressures...

THEORETICAL STUDY OF RAW COTTON TRANSPORTATION PROCESS ON THE SUBMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION DEVICE AgEcon
Rakhmonov, Xayridin; Safarov, Adyl.
The transportation of raw cotton in many respects is carried out through rotating screws or moving tapes. The study considers influence of raw cotton humidity on increase of friction factor during transportation process using submission and distribution device. It is shown that increase of humidity of raw cotton within the limits of 11 up to 38% is accompanied by surge of static and kinetic frictions. The research is executed by experimental methods on the special stand with use of strain measurement.

Thermal and ammonia concentration gradients in a rabbit barn with two ventilation system designs AGRIAMBI
Flores-Velázquez,Jorge; Villarreal-Guerrero,Federico; Ojeda,Waldo; Ruíz-García,Agustín.
ABSTRACT Rabbit barns are of economic importance in central Mexico, where rabbit breeders use rustic buildings for production. In such barns, climate conditioning is mostly based on natural ventilation (NV) where the lack of a well-designed NV system may be a limiting factor. In this study, computational fluid dynamics was used to analyse the performance of the NV system in a 24 x 4 x 4.8 m typical Central Mexico rabbit barn with a density of 20 rabbits m-2 of cage. The barn included both side vents at 1.2 m in height from the ground. Results indicated exchange rates of 0.052 and 2.9 x 10-4 m3 m-2 s-1 when the wind direction was simulated as orthogonal and parallel to the side vents, respectively, suggesting the orthogonal direction favoured the exchange...
