Dispersion of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1894) in the rural zone of north Paraná State 52
Lopes,José; Martins,Emerson Augusto Castilho; Oliveira,Osmar de; Oliveira,Valdecir de; Oliveira Neto,Bertolino Pedro de; Oliveira,José Eduardo de.
Seventy-two tyres were placed in four transects (Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western), every 5 km, from the Londrina city limits to the rural areas, to verify the dispersion of Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus vectors. Mosquito larvae were collected fortnightly from August 1998 to August 1999. Data were organized according to the average number of larvae collected for each species in each collection site. A total of 62,517 mosquito larvae were collected and distributed into the following species: Aedes albopictus (21.71%); Ae. aegypti (5.54%); Ae. terrens (0.53%); Ae. fluviatilis (0.36%); Anopheles argyritarsi (0.01%); Culex quinquefasciatus (48.37%); Cx. mollis (8.88%); Cx. eduardoi (8.65%); Cx. corniger (0.61%); Cx. bigoti (0.24%); Cx. grupo...

Effects of exercise and metformin on the prevention of glucose intolerance: a comparative study 56
Molena-Fernandes,C.; Bersani-Amado,C. A.; Ferraro,Z. M.; Hintze,L. J.; Nardo Jr.,N.; Cuman,R. K. N..
We aimed to evaluate the effects of aerobic exercise training (4 days) and metformin exposure on acute glucose intolerance after dexamethasone treatment in rats. Forty-two adult male Wistar rats (8 weeks old) were divided randomly into four groups: sedentary control (SCT), sedentary dexamethasone-treated (SDX), training dexamethasone-treated (DPE), and dexamethasone and metformin treated group (DMT). Glucose tolerance tests and in situ liver perfusion were undertaken on fasting rats to obtain glucose profiles. The DPE group displayed a significant decrease in glucose values compared with the SDX group. Average glucose levels in the DPE group did not differ from those of the DMT group, so we suggest that exercise training corrects dexamethasone-induced...

High frequency of visceral leishmaniasis in dogs under veterinary clinical care in an intense transmission area in the state of Tocantins, Brazil 65
Santos,Helcileia Dias; Galvão,Samara Rocha; Dias,Francisca Elda Ferreira; Ribeiro,Taiã Mairon Peixoto; Negreiros Filho,Osmar; Sousa,Sebastiana Adriana Pereira; Minharro,Silvia.
ABSTRACT: A direct search for parasites were used as the diagnostic test to determine the frequency of Leishmania spp. infection in dogs ( Canis lupus familiaris ) under veterinary clinical care in the city of Araguaína, Tocantins, Brazil. For this approach, lymph node cell samples were collected using needle aspiration from 649 dogs of different breeds and ages. Two hundred and sixty four (40.7%) dogs tested positive for amastigote forms of Leishmania spp. Furthermore, 202 (76.5%) dogs that tested positive showed some clinical sign of disease, while 62 (28.4%) dogs were asymptomatic. Dogs <2 years old or those that lived alongside poultry species in peri-domicile areas had a greater chance of infection (P<0.05). Our results revealed the importance...

In vitro inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa adhesion by Xylitol 52
Sousa,Letícia Pinheiro de; Silva,Annelisa Farah da; Calil,Natalia Oliveira; Oliveira,Murilo Gomes; Silva,Silvio Silvério da; Raposo,Nádia Rezende Barbosa.
This study evaluated, in vitro, the antimicrobial activity and the anti-adherent property of xylitol (0.5, 2.5 and 5.0%, w/v) on two Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains (ATCC 9027 and clinical). The assay of antimicrobial activity was performed to determine a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the adhesion test was performed, by which the parameters regarding, growth in the culture medium, number of colony forming units (CFUs) released and slide evaluation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were analyzed. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was employed for statistical analysis. Results showed that xylitol had no antimicrobial activity on these strains; however, the inhibition of bacterial adherence was observed in microphotographs...

Intra-abdominal adhesions in horses 195
Palma, Maurício Luiz Mesquita de; Foz Filho, Roberto Pimenta de Pádua.
Objective: To present a literature review on the physiopathology of intra-abdominal adhesions, contributing to the understanding of its occurrence. Data Sources: The information was obtained from CAB, MEDLINE and PUBMED databases, covering a retrospective period of 20 years. Data Synthesis: but a abdominal adhesions are the major cause of recurrent colic and relaparotomy in horses. Its occurrence is underestimated, once documentation is based on some post-mortem examinations and on relaparotomy only. Conclusions: The preventive methods consist of good surgical technique and utilization of resources that are suitable for application in horses and financially worthy.
