Description and analysis of genetic diversity among squash accessions BABT
Tsivelikas,Athanasios L.; Koutita,Olga; Anastasiadou,Anastasia; Skaracis,George N.; Traka-Mavrona,Ekaterini; Koutsika-Sotiriou,Metaxia.
In this work, the part of the squash core collection, maintained in the Greek Gene Bank, was assessed using the morphological and molecular data. Sixteen incompletely classified accessions of the squash were characterized along with an evaluation of their resistance against two isolates of Fusarium oxysporum. A molecular analysis using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers was also performed, revealing high level of polymorphism. To study the genetic diversity among the squash accessions, a clustering procedure using Unweighed Pair Group Method and Arithmetic Average (UPGMA) algorithm was also adopted. Two independent dendrograms, one for the morphophysiological and one for molecular data were obtained, classifying the accessions into two and...

Difference Analysis on the Sustainable Development of Eco-city - A Case of 14 Cities in Gansu Province, China AgEcon
Chen, Hui.
Taking 14 cities of Gansu Province as examples, this paper adopts the Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis methods based on the theory of sustainable development and ecological city. A total of 36 index factors of the sustainable development of eco-city are selected. Through establishing the evaluation index system of sustainable eco-city, the sustainable development level of eco-cities in Gansu Province is analyzed. Research result is as follows: (1) according to the Principal Component Analysis, there are significant regional differences among the sustainable development of eco-city in Gansu Province; and its influencing factors can be summarized as comprehensive economic development factor, industrial development factor, land-use factor,...

Ecological Safety Evaluation of Land Use in Ji’an City Based on the Principal Component Analysis AgEcon
Liu, Fei-yue; Wang, Shao-kai.
According to the ecological safety evaluation index data of land-use change in Ji’an City from 1999 to 2008, positive treatment on selected reverse indices is conducted by Reciprocal Method. Meanwhile, Index Method is used to standardize the selected indices, and Principal Component Analysis is applied by using year as a unit. FB is obtained, which is related with the ecological safety of land-use change from 1999 to 2008. According to the scientific, integrative, hierarchical, practical and dynamic principles, ecological safety evaluation index system of land-use change in Ji’an City is established. Principal Component Analysis and evaluation model are used to calculate four parameters, including the natural resources safety index of the land use, the...

Estimating Poverty Over Time and Space: Construction of a Time-Variant Poverty Index for Costa Rica AgEcon
Cavatassi, Romina; Davis, Benjamin; Lipper, Leslie.
This paper presents the construction of a spatially explicit, nationally disaggregated measure of poverty over time in Costa Rica. The paper first describes the two possible methods considered for the construction of a poverty map: principal component analysis (PCA) versus small area estimation. Next, reasons for choosing PCA and a description of its application both at one point in time (1973) and over time are presented together with the resulting poverty maps. The methodology applied represents a methodological innovation in that the resulting poverty map is time variant rather than concentrated in a single moment in time. A comparison of the results obtainable using various techniques and a discussion on the relative merits of the various options...

Femoral Functional Adaptation: A Comparison Between Hunter Gatherers and Farmers Using Geometric Morphometrics International Journal of Morphology
Püschel,Thomas A; Benítez,Hugo A.
The transition from hunting and gathering to agriculture has been associated with a gracilization in human form, especially in long bones. This has been interpreted as result of an increasingly sedentary lifestyle and reduced workload in the farming populations. However the majority of these evidences have been based on the application of different biomechanical techniques or the qualitative assessment of distinct morphological traits on attachment sites. Hence, this study tried to address whether is possible to distinguish between two different populations (hunter-gatherers and farmers) by quantifying their femoral morphology applying geometric morphometrics. We compared 16 male left femora belonging to two populations of Native Americans from the same...

Geochemical portray of the Pacific Ridge: New isotopic data and statistical techniques ArchiMer
Hamelin, Cedric; Dosso, Laure; Hanan, Barry B.; Moreira, Manuel; Kositsky, Andrew P.; Thomas, Marion Y..
Samples collected during the PACANTARCTIC 2 cruise fill a sampling gap from 53 degrees to 41 degrees S along the Pacific Antarctic Ridge (PAR). Analysis of Sr, Nd, Pb, Hf, and He isotope compositions of these new samples is shown together with published data from 66 degrees S to 53 degrees S and from the EPR. The recent advance in analytical mass spectrometry techniques generates a spectacular increase in the number of multidimensional isotopic data for oceanic basalts. Working with such multidimensional datasets generates a new approach for the data interpretation, preferably based on statistical analysis techniques. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a powerful mathematical tool to study this type of datasets. The purpose of PCA is to reduce the...
