The objective of this study was to determine PROP (6-n-propyltiouracil) taster status in adults and its relationship with anthropometric variables and pleasantness of sugar, salt, and fat. A total of 123 subjects rated the intensity of PROP and sodium cloride (NaCl) solutions using the labeled magnitude scale. For pleasantness evaluation, it was used concentrated orange juice (sugar) and mashed potato (salt and fat). The subjects were classified as non-tasters (n = 35), medium-tasters (n = 33) and super-tasters (n = 55). In this study, no relationship was found between PROP taster status and age, sex, weight, body mass index, and pleasantness. Although genetic markers may influence the degree of liking of certain foods, one must consider that the... |

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of thyroxine and PTU in ascitic Ehrlich tumor cells. Tumor was implanted in 30 female mice distributed in three groups: treated with PTU, treated with thyroxine and control. Each group received an intraperitoneal injection of neoplastic cells, pre-incubated with sterile solutions of PTU, thyroxine and distilled water, respectively. On the fifth and seventh days after inoculation, animals received an intraperitoneal injection of the respective solutions. On the tenth day after inoculation, animals were sacrificed. Volume of ascitic liquid, number of neoplastic cells/ml and percentage of viable cells were determined. Ascitic liquid smears were carried out for tumor cytological evaluation. There was... |

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to investigate the effects of transient treatment with propylthiouracil (PTU) on some reproduction traits and live weight of quails. The trial lasted 8 weeks. To accomplish this goal, 700 1-day-old quail chicks were used, randomly divided into 8 groups. PTU was added to feed by 0.1% and 0.5% /wt. The first 4 groups had 0.5% PTU at the age of 2-4, 4-6, 6-8 and 2-8 wk., respectively. The 5 th, 6 th and 7 th groups had 0.1% PTU at the age of 2-4, 4-6 and 6-8 wk., respectively, and the 8 th group was the control with no PTU. Quails were bled at 60 days of age. Then right and left testes were taken out and weighed. At the end of the trail, least square means of the live weight of the treatment groups were higher than the... |
