Accuracy of dose planning for prostate radiotherapy in the presence of metallic implants evaluated by electron spin resonance dosimetry BJMBR
Alves,G.G.; Kinoshita,A.; Oliveira,H.F. de; Guimarães,F.S.; Amaral,L.L.; Baffa,O..
Radiotherapy is one of the main approaches to cure prostate cancer, and its success depends on the accuracy of dose planning. A complicating factor is the presence of a metallic prosthesis in the femur and pelvis, which is becoming more common in elderly populations. The goal of this work was to perform dose measurements to check the accuracy of radiotherapy treatment planning under these complicated conditions. To accomplish this, a scale phantom of an adult pelvic region was used with alanine dosimeters inserted in the prostate region. This phantom was irradiated according to the planned treatment under the following three conditions: with two metallic prostheses in the region of the femur head, with only one prosthesis, and without any prostheses. The...

Gadelha,C.R.F.; Vicente,W.R.R.; Ribeiro,A.P.C.; Apparício,M.F.; Covizzi,G.J.; Machado,L.D.S..
The physiological parameters that could be reference for trustful diagnosis and prognosis of prostate disorders in dogs were obtained. Thirty six intact male dogs without clinical signs of neither prostatic nor reproductive disorders were allocated according the age in three groups. These animals were submitted to semen manual collection for microbiological exams; transabdominal ultrasonography to evaluate dimensions, ecogenicity, and texture of prostatic parenchyma and aspirative puncture with fine needle for cytological and microbiological analyses. Ultrasonography revealed that the predominant prostatic shape was round with regular surface. Dimensions varied according to age, being small in young animals and large in old ones. There was a positive...

Association between HPV infection and prostate cancer in a Mexican population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Medel-Flores,Olivia; Valenzuela-Rodríguez,Vania Alejandra; Ocadiz-Delgado,Rodolfo; Castro-Muñoz,Leonardo Josué; Hernández-Leyva,Sandra; Lara-Hernández,Gabriel; Silva-Escobedo,Jesús-Gabriel; Vidal,Patricio Gariglio; Sánchez-Monroy,Virginia.
Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between prostate cancer (PCa) and Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in the Mexican population. We studied 356 paraffin-embedded tissues from unrelated Mexican men with PCa or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), with the latter serving as control. HPV detection was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using universal primers, and viral genotypes were detected using sequencing or multiplex PCR. Light microscopy analyses enabled the identification of koilocytes in samples subsequently analyzed for HPV detection by in situ PCR and for p16-INK4A expression by immunohistochemistry. The results showed that high risk- (HR) HPVs were detected in 37/189 (19.6%) PCa specimens compared to 16/167...

Concomitant prostatic schistosomiasis and sdenocarcinoma: case report and review BJID
Basílio-de-Oliveira,Carlos Alberto; Aquino,Armando; Simon,Eliane Francine; Eyer-Silva,Walter A..
The term schistosomiasis encompasses a group of infectious disorders caused by five species of the genus Schistosoma, a blood trematode of outstanding importance in tropical areas. Some of these disorders have long been associated with malignant neoplasia, the most striking association being between disease caused by Schistosoma haematobium, the predominant etiological agent of urinary schistosomiasis, and squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder, a relatively uncommon vesical cancer in non-endemic areas. Four cases of simultaneous adenocarcinoma and schistosomiasis of the prostate have been previously reported (S. haematobium in three and S. mansoni in one). We report a fifth case of concomitant adenocarcinoma and schistosomiasis of the prostate in a...

Early effects of estrogen on the rat ventral prostate BJMBR
García-Flórez,M.; Oliveira,C.A.; Carvalho,H.F..
Complex interactions between androgen and estrogen (E2) regulate prostatic development and physiology. We analyzed the early effects of a high single dose of E2 (25 mg/kg body weight) and castration (separately or combined) on the adult 90-day-old male Wistar rat ventral prostate. Androgen levels, prostate weight, and the variation in the relative and absolute volume of tissue compartments and apoptotic indices were determined for 7 days. Castration and exogenous E2 markedly reduced ventral prostate weight (about 50% of the control), with a significant reduction in the epithelial compartment and increased stroma. The final volume of the epithelium was identical at day 7 for all treatments (58.5% of the control). However, E2 had an immediate effect, causing...

Effect of Flutamide in Mouse Spermatogenesis and on the Function of Seminal Vesicle and Prostate International Journal of Morphology
Bustos-Obregón,Eduardo; Esponda,Pedro; Sarabia,Luis.
The spermatogenesis is regulated by the hypotalamus-hypophysis gonadal axis, and the androgens play a fundamental role in their last stages. The administration of the antiandrogen flutamide interferes with the function of androgen dependent organs (Prostate (P) and Seminal Vesicle (VS)). In this study flutamide (10mg/Kg b.w.) was injected to 10 mice and vehicle to the controls (n=6). The mice were sacrificed at 24 (n=5) and 72 (n=5) hours. In testicular sections the tubular diameter (TD) and height of seminiferous epithelium (EH) were measured. P and VS were macerated, and concentrations of fructose (VS) and zinc (P) were determined. No significant difference exists in the DT among the groups. However, the 72 hrs group showed EH higher than the control (p...

Mahabadi,Javad Amini; Bafrani,Hassan Hassani; Nikzad,Hossein.
Infertility is a great concern among the people of reproductive age. The use of natural products obtained from traditional herbs is appealing. Studies show that antioxidants are important in improving male infertility. Thirty adult male rats were randomly divided into two regimen and control groups. The regimen group received diet containing 30 % sesame seed, while the control group received standard diet for 12 weeks. Histology of prostate and seminal vesicle were evaluated and serum levels of FSH, LH and testosterone concentrations were assessed as well. The results showed that, the diameter of peripheral epithelium and the volume density of the prostate epithelium increased but the volume density of the prostate stroma was decreased significantly in the...

Protective Effect of Alcoholic Extract of Garden Cress Seeds on the Histopathological Changes of the Ventral Prostate in Streptozotocin Diabetic Rats International Journal of Morphology
Kamani,Mehran; Mhabadi,Javad Amini; Atlasi,Mohammad Ali; Seyedi,Fatemeh; Kamani,Emran; Nikzad,Hossein.
Diabetes mellitus is a common serious metabolic illness occurring worldwide that may lead to male infertility. Various plants have been used in the treatment of diabetes. In this study, the effect of garden cress (Lepidium sativum) seed extract on fasting blood sugar is assessed for its protective effect on histopathological changes in the ventral prostate gland of streptozotocine-induced diabetic rats. Fifty adult male Wistar rats were randomly selected into five groups. Group 1 was the control placebo group where rats received only 0.1 mL normal saline via gastric gavages. Rats in Group 2 received an intraperitoneal injection of STZ 60 mg/kg body weight and those with FBS >250 mg/dL were considered diabetic. In Group 3, diabetic rats received insulin...

Rat dorsal prostate is necessary for vaginal adhesion of the seminal plug and sperm motility in the uterine horns Biol. Res.
Tlachi-López,José L; López,Aurora; Hoffman,Kurt; Velázquez-Moctezuma,Javier; García-Lorenzana,Mario; Lucio,Rosa Angélica.
The rat prostate comprises dorsal, ventral and lateral lobes that are morphologically and biochemically distinct. Lesions to these structures are expected to affect the quality of the ejaculate and male fertility. In experiment 1, we analyzed ejaculate parameters of males that had chemical lesions of the dorsal or ventral lobes. At pre-lesion and at 5 and 20 days post-lesion males were mated, and after ejaculation, seminal fluid and seminal plug were obtained from the mated females. In experiment 2, the ventral lobes were ablated, and the ejaculate was analyzed. In experiment 3, the fertility of males with chemically-lesioned dorsal lobes or ablation of the ventral lobes was evaluated. Chemical lesion of the dorsal lobe prevented the adhesion of the...

Transcriptional regulators and regulatory pathways involved in prostate gland adaptation to a hypoandrogen environment Genet. Mol. Biol.
Nishan,Umar; da Rosa-Ribeiro,Rafaela; Damas-Souza,Danilo Marchete; Barbosa,Guilherme Oliveira; Carvalho,Hernandes F..
Abstract Anti-androgen therapies, including orchiectomy, are effective at promoting prostate cancer remission, but are followed by progression to the more aggressive castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Castration promotes gland and tumor shrinkage. However, prostate adaptation to androgen deprivation involves striking parallel events, all requiring changes in gene expression. We hypothesized that transcription factors (TF) and other transcription-related genes are needed to orchestrate those changes. In this work, downstream analysis using bioinformatic tools and published microarray data allowed us to identify sixty transcriptional regulators (including 10 TF) and to integrate their function in physiologically relevant networks. Functional...
