ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of chicory seedlings in organic substrata and their influence on yield and commercial yield in a protected environment and under direct sunlight. Seedling and field production experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with four blocks. In the first experiment, seedlings were produced on substrata by alternating the conditioner: 1) dry coconut fiber + blend (soil, organic compost, charcoal); 2) carbonized rice husk + blend; 3) crushed ouricuri stem + blend; 4) decomposed kapok stem + blend and 5) commercial substratum. Em cultivos protegidos as variáveis essenciais para a determinação da demanda hídrica, como os coeficientes de cultura (Kc), ainda são bastantes escassas no Brasil e no mundo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o Kc de híbridos de melão grupo Cantalupensis, em função dos graus-dia (GD). O experimento foi conduzido em estufa plástica no campo experimental da Embrapa Hortaliças, Distrito Federal. Foram testados o cultivo de cinco híbridos de melão, com e sem o uso mulching para cobertura do solo. Para obter a evapotranspiração da cultura foram utilizados lisímetros de percolação. |

Lettuce and tomato are vegetables that can be grown in protected cultivation, under given conditions. Considering their expensive production systems, intercropping might be an excellent alternative to optimize costs. Four experiments were carried out at the São Paulo State University (UNESP), at Jaboticabal, Brazil, to study the economic viability of intercropping lettuce and tomato under protected cultivation. This study with beetroot seedlings, cultivar Top Tall Early Wonder, was carried out at the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS/Aquidauana), from October to November 2008. Three environments of cultivation were used: greenhouse; nursery with monofilament screen of 50 % of shading; and nursery with aluminized thermal reflective screen of 50% of shading. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic divergence among eggplant genotypes for agronomic traits in order to gather information for the selection of genotypes in eggplant breeding programs for tolerance to high temperatures. Ten traits recommended by the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources were analyzed in 24 genotypes, arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Data were submitted to analysis of variance (P<0.01) and later to the UPGMA and Tocher grouping methods, using the generalized Mahalanobis distance (D2) as dissimilarity measure. ABSTRACT This research was carried out in Recife, PE, Brazil, and aimed to assess the variation of the surface temperature of trays and substrate in the production of lettuce seedlings and its influence on the final product. Trays consisted of expanded polystyrene, conventional polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride painted white, and polyvinyl chloride painted gray. ABSTRACT The region of Viçosa in Brazil stands out for vegetable production. For success in this activity, the correct choice of cultivar with the correctly applied irrigation are necessary. As such, the aim of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of radish cultivars submitted to different irrigation depths. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen and potassium silicate on the productive and commercial aspects of curly lettuce, Vera cultivar. The experimental design was completely randomized (CRD), with ten treatments and three replications. The treatments, arranged in a factorial design according to the Plan Puebla III matrix (Turrent & Laird, 1975), consisted of the combination of five doses of nitrogen (9; 54; 90; 126 and 171 kg ha-1) and five doses of potassium silicate (1.15; 6.90; 11.50; 16.10 and 21.85 kg ha-1). The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of three Japanese group cucumber hybrids, which were cultivated in two cultivation systems. The experiment was designed in a split-plot randomized block design with two cultivation systems (coconut fiber and soil) for commercial Japanese cucumber hybrids ('Tsuyataro', 'Yoshinari' and 'Nankyoku').
