An ancient compound rediscovered: perspectives of aphid control in organic hop growing by the use of quassia products Organic Eprints
Weihrauch, Florian; Eckert, Markus; Engelhard, Bernhard.
In the first three decades of the 20th century, quassia extract was widely used in hop growing as a chemical agent to control Phorodon humuli and other insect pests. In the first years of the 21st century this compound was rediscovered by German organic hop growers. In nine efficacy trials conducted in five field seasons, quassia products proved to be effective control agents for P. humuli in organically grown aroma cultivars. As the best method of application a systemic variant was developed by painting a suspension of quassia extract to the bines. This method proved not only to be very effective but was also best from an environmental point of view as sprayed quassia extracts had side effects on non-target organisms. As an optimal systemic application...

Anbaueignung gegenüber Flug- und Hartbrand (Ustilago nuda, U. hordei) widerstandsfähiger Wintergerste-Handelssorten unter ökologischer Bewirtschaftung Organic Eprints
Lorenz, Norbert; Klause, Stefan; Spieß, Hartmut.
Because of the interdiction of chemical seed treatment, smut resistance is a main demand for cultivation of winter barley in organic farming. A comparison of common high yielding varieties with those chosen particularly with regard to good smut-resistance or tolerance showed no significant differences in field performance under the conditions of organic farming. Main criteria were the yield of grain and the content of protein and most important amino acids for animal nutrition (Cystine, Lysine, Me-thionine, Threonine, Tryptophan). Besides this the degree of shading weeds was estimated by means of measuring leaf areas and lengths of stalks. The leaf area proved to be the main factor. The availability of smut resistant or tolerant varieties out of organic...

Approaches for field assessment of resistance to leaf pathogens in spring barley varieties Organic Eprints
Pinnschmidt, H.O.; Hovmøller, M.S.; Østergård, H..
The resistance of spring barley varieties to powdery mildew, leaf rust, leaf scald and net blotch was characterized by using results from inoculated small-plot nurseries and larger survey plots subject to natural infection. The experiments were conducted in different environments. Both trial types often yielded complementary results with respect to the ranking of varieties suggesting that a recommended variety characterization should include both naturally infected survey-type trials and nursery trials in which the most relevant pathogen isolates and/or isolate mixtures or populations are used for inoculation. Average and median values of the diseased leaf area of a variety were highly correlated with each other and with the genotype main effect determined...

Assessment of disease in low-input cereal cropping systems and variety trials Organic Eprints
Hovmøller, M.S.; Pinnschmidt, H.; Willas, J.; Østergård, H..
Disease assessment is the basis for describing disease resistance characteristics of commercial varieties in national variety lists for all crops where disease is considered a problem. It is well known that ‘disease’ in a specific situation depends on a whole range of interacting hosts, pathogens and environmental conditions. However, the biological complexity conflicts with the wish to express disease resistance characteristics of a variety as a single score per disease. This problem will be illustrated by basic dynamics of growth and senescence of both host and pathogen over time. Disease expressed in terms of absolute diseased leaf area, disease relative to total leaf area or green leaf area will be discussed in general. Two particular problems in...

Biological control of common bunt (Tilletia tritici) in organic farming Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Davanlou, Mehrnaz.
Common bunt (Tilletia tritici syn. T. caries) is a significant seed borne plant disease in organic agriculture. General measures in ecological crop protection like crop rotation and manuring practice has in practice failed to control this disease, and direct seed treatment therefore seems to be necessary to ensure yield and food quality. Current study indicate that biological control can give successful control without negative effects on seed germination vigour. A combination of biocontrol agents and milk powder improves the effect of the biocontrol. Application of compost to the soil increases the frequency of this disease. The potential role of biocontrol within the principles of ecological disease management is being discussed.

Cereal breeding strategies for organic and low-external-input crop production systems Organic Eprints
Acikgoz, Prof. Dr. Nazimi; Ilker, Dr. Emre.
Increasing trend in organic farming does not seem to have yet attracted the attention of many plant breeders. On the other side, in every cropping system, for every species, best performing cultivars are needed in each macro-ecology. Considering dif-ferent cropping systems, such as open or glasshouse production, main or second crop alternatives, plant breeders have to focus on the genotype-environment and genotype-input interactions. Organic farming is in need of tailor-made genotypes for almost every crop. In fact, in the near future the same amount of organic registered cultivars will be needed as the conventional cultivars. Conducting an immediate single or combined “seed-bed – pot – field test” might be a logical start to de-termine organic...

Control of seed borne diseases in production of organic cereals Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Bent; Borgen, Anders; Kristensen, Lars.
In production of organic seed it is important to have some control measures on seed borne diseases to avoid propagation and spread of serious diseases. Due to lack of acceptable treatment methods the only way for the moment is to discard seed lots with unacceptable infections. Experiments have been started to find new and alternative methods for controlling seed borne diseases. In spring barley the results show good effect with 5% acetic acid on leaf stripe (Pyrenophora graminea) but problems with unacceptable effects on seed germination have to be solved. The old method with hot water treatment can be used and the results indicate good results against leaf stripe using water at 55°C. The effect of hot water was enhanced by first soaking the seeds in water...

Differences between spring wheat cultivars for emergence and early development after seed infection with Fusarium culmorum Organic Eprints
Timmermans, B.G.H; Osman, A.M..
Infection of wheat seeds with Fusarium spp. causes seedling blight. As a result of this disease, fields sown with infected seeds show a reduced plant density. This is especially a problem in organic agriculture, for which currently no practical seed disinfection methods are available. In the present project we investigated whether spring wheat cultivars differ in sensitivity to seedling blight, whether the possible differences could be linked to cultivar differences in early growth rates, and what size the delay in canopy closure resulting from the plant reductions was. Six spring wheat cultivars (Melon, Lavett, SW Kungsjet, Epos, Pasteur, Thasos), containing three infection levels (averages 5, 15 and 27%) of Fusarium culmorum were obtained and were sown...

Differences between spring wheat cultivars in susceptibility to Fusarium caused seedling blight Organic Eprints
Timmermans, Dr. B.G.H.; Osman, Ir. A.M..
Fusarium spp. present on spring wheat seeds can infect seedlings and cause reduced plant densities and higher wheat infestations. In the current project, variation between commercially available spring wheat cultivars in their tolerance to Fusarium seedling blight was investigated in a pot and a field trail. Additionally, initial growth rates of cultivars were measured to investigate possible relations with tolerance. Preliminary analysis shows presence of tolerance differences between the spring wheat cultivars in the pot and field experiment. This difference was relatively robust (experiment x cultivar interaction was not significant). Preliminary analysis also showed a relation between tolerance and initial growth rates of cultivars in the field...

Does regional organic screening and breeding make sense? Experimental evidence from organic outdoor tomato breeding Organic Eprints
Horneburg, Dr. Bernd; Becker, Prof. Heiko.
Does regional organic screening and breeding make sense? To answer this question we looked for experimental evidence in an organic outdoor tomato project. Potentially suitable varieties were collected, genotype x environment interactions were investiga-ted and selection was carried out within three crosses at three farms in Central and Northern Germany. The resulting selections were compared at all farms. Screening within organic horticulture was the most important means of finding suitable varieties. After three years of evaluation, 71% of the 18 most successful varieties came from colleagues within organic horticulture. The analysis of the regional evaluation did not reveal strong interactions of varieties and locations. The rate of Phytophthora (late...
