In a field experiment conducted over two growing seasons, the effectiveness and phytotoxicity of inorganic fungicides such as sulphur, lime sulphur, copper, silicon and Armicarb (a new formulation of potassium bicarbonate) was compared with water for the control of primary apple scab infections in Belgium on high, medium and low scab-susceptible cultivars (cvs. ‘Pinova’, ‘Pirouette’ and ‘Reinette des Capucins’, respectively). In order to drastically reduce the amount of fungicide applied in the orchard, two approaches were used: (i) a strategy involving spraying during the infection process, just before conditions for infection had been fulfilled according to the RIMpro software warning system; and (ii) a tunnel sprayer machine for treatment applications.... |

A new arbuscular mycorrhizal, Paraglomus-like, fungal species (Glomeromycotina) was found and propagated in single-species cultures established from spores coming from Oman, Greece, Tunisia, and New Caledonia. The hyaline spores of the fungus are small, 17–67 μm diam. when globose. Their spore wall consists of an evanescent, 1.0–2.3 μm thick, short-lived outer layer and a laminate, smooth, 3.8–7.3 μm thick inner layer, of which none shows amyloid or dextrinoid reaction in Melzer's reagent. Mycorrhizal structures (arbuscules and hyphae without vesicles) of the fungus stained slightly in Trypan blue, thus like those of the formerly described Paraglomus spp., in which the histochemical feature has been recognized. However, in the phylogenies gained from... |

Phylogenetic analyses of sequences of the SSU–ITS–LSU nrDNA segment and the RPB1 gene showed that the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus originally described as Diversispora omaniana does not belong to the genus Diversispora, but represents a separate clade at the rank of genus in the family Diversisporaceae of the order Diversisporales. The closest natural relatives of the fungus proved to be species of the genera Corymbiglomus and Redeckera. Consequently, the new genus was named Desertispora, and Di. omaniana was renamed De. omaniana comb. nov. In addition, the morphological and histochemical features of spores and mycorrhizal structures of a new Diversispora sp., Di. sabulosa, were described and the closest relatives of the species were determined based on... |

An original and integrative evaluation indicator has been developed to quantify the cumulated damage from major pests and diseases affecting grape bunches: downy mildew, powdery mildew, gray mould and tortricid moths. It made it possible to estimate the associated crop losses and to relate them to the plant protection strategy in different modes of production (organic farming, in-transition, conventional). Thus, overall plant losses were higher in 2012 than in 2011. The in-transition growers’ strategy, with reduced copper doses but increased numbers of sprays, led to a 20% increase in average severity on bunches (essentially due to Downy mildew). The more pragmatic approach of experienced organic growers and conventional ones (higher doses and fewer... |

The European cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis cerasi (L.) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is the most important pest of sweet cherries in Europe. The aim of our experiments was to develop a new, cost-efficient, lead chromate-free and more eco-friendly trap for monitoring and mass trapping of R. cerasi. Five different-colored yellow panels and three different trap shapes were compared to a standard Rebell® amarillo trap in three experimental orchards in 2012. Trap color F, with a strong increase in reflectance at 500–550 nm and a secondary peak in the UV-region at 300–400 nm, captured significantly more flies than the standard Rebell® amarillo trap. Yellow traps with increased reflectance in the blue region (400–500 nm) were least attractive. Trap shape was of minor... |

The reorganisation from conventional to organic farming practice on a farm located in Northern Germany was accompanied in a long term monitoring to survey the abun-dances of cereal aphids and their natural enemies in winter wheat. The research project focuses on the interactions of host plant and aphids in ecological crop rotation systems differing in their amount of legumes (nitrogen intensive, nitrogen extensive system). Additionally manure treated winter wheat plots established in both ecological crop rota-tion systems were investigated. For comparison the abundance of aphids in conventional farming systems with winter wheat fields nearby were also monitored. The results indi-cate that within the triannual investigation period, aphids significantly... |

Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) is a fungal disease with a large ability to spread. Consequences may be rejection of grains for sale or even a large decrease of yield. Different trials were carried out in organic farming in a research project (funded by the French Ministry of Agriculture between 2008 and 2011) to achieve a better control of common bunt. Results confirm that the resistance of wheat cultivars is a factor to consider. Despite most varieties currently cultivated in organic farming are sensitive to common bunt, some cultivars appeared to be resistant to the races tested. Concerning seed treatment, no product is available for organic farming and 100% efficient; but several solutions have been identified. Only one product is... |

In this study several oil press cakes were investigated as exclusive substrates for different moulds and yeasts for the production of flavor-active decalactones via solidstate fermentation (SSF). Experiments are focused on pre-treatment methods for olive cake to remove antimicrobial phenolic substances contained in the oil cake disturbing or even inhibiting microbial growth. Choosing Ceratocystis moniliformis as the reference microorganism best results were obtained by a combination of hot water flushes and enzymatic treatment of the cake. Fermentation with sunflower, olive and linseed cake did not lead to lactone formation in detectable amounts although all of these substrates provided good microbial growth. On castor cake, however, five microorganisms... |
