Biotyping and genotypic diversity among oral Candida albicans strains from caries-free and caries-active healthy children BJM
Mardegan,Rita de Cássia; Klein,Marlise Inêz; Golvea,Magda Baglione; Rodrigues,Janaina Aparecida Oliveira; Gonçalves,Reginaldo Bruno; Höfling,José Francisco.
Candida albicans oral strains collected from caries-free and caries-active healthy children ranging from 24 to 36 months old, were studied. The aim of the study was to determine proteinase and phospholipase activities produced by Candida albicans in the two groups and to determine the phenotypic diversity of these enzymes based on genetic polymorphism using the AP-PCR method. Strains identified by morphological and fermentation tests as C. albicans were grown in proteinase and phospholipase agar media at 37ºC for 7 and 4 days, respectively. After the incubation period, the enzyme activity of the proteinase and phospholipase positive strains was measured. All strains were subjected to AP-PCR, using the arbitrary primer AP-3. The enzymatic analysis showed no...

Etude de la variabilité spatio-temporelle des caractéristiques physiologiques des jeunes stades de vie de la seiche Sepia officinalis L. en Manche. ArchiMer
Safi, Georges.
The common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, is a major exploited marine resource in the English Channel. It has strong seasonal and interannual variations in recruitment. Mechanisms affecting the renewal of the stock by the arrival of new “recruits” and their number need to be better understood. Thus the study of the spatial and temporal variability of “pre-recruits” physiological characteristics was conducted in four spawning sites of the Channel [i.e. Agon Coutainville (FR), Baie de Seine (FR), Selsey (UK) and Torbay (UK)]. The studied parameters were the eggs quality and hatching rate then, the digestive and immune performance of juveniles in relation to local environmental conditions. English eggs have a delayed hatching time and higher hatching rate when...

Pathogenicity characteristics of stocked and fresh yeasts strains BJM
Chaves,Guilherme Maranhão; Cavalcanti,Maria Auxiliadora de Queiroz; Porto,Ana Lúcia Figueiredo.
In order to evaluate the pathogenicity of yeasts of medical importance, 15 strains stocked in mineral oil at the URM Culture Collection of the Department of Mycology, Biological Sciences Centre, Federal University of Pernambuco and 15 fresh strains isolated from AIDS patients interned at the Clinical Hospital, Centre of Health Sciences, Federal University of Pernambuco, were selected. As pathogenicity characteristics, the ability to grow at 37ºC and production of phospolipase and proteinase were tested. All samples grew at 37ºC and exhibited proteinase activity. However when tested on solid medium, the proteinase activity was negative. Among 15 stocked samples, 13 (86.66%) were phospholipase positive and two (13.34%) were phospholipase negative. From the...

Presence of Staphylococcus spp. and Candida spp. in the human oral cavity BJM
Martins,Clélia Aparecida de Paiva; Koga-Ito,Cristiane Yumi; Jorge,Antonio Olavo Cardoso.
The presence of yeasts and staphylococci in the oral cavity is important because they can act as supplementary microbiota and in certain situations can cause oral or systemic diseases. The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of Candida spp. and Staphylococcus spp. in the human oral cavity. Oral rinses were collected from sixty-eight individuals according to the technique described by Samaranayake and MacFarlane and then cultured on Sabouraud medium supplemented with chloramphenicol and Baird-Parker agar. After the incubation period, the microorganisms were isolated and identified through biochemical tests. The data obtained were statistically analysed by ANOVA. Candida spp. were isolated from 61.76% of the examined individuals and C. albicans was...

Treatment of serum with supernatants from cultures of Candida albicans reduces its serum-dependent phagocytosis BJM
Santos,Aderbal Antonio dos; Sá,Eglius Alexandre Colignese de; Gaziri,Luis Carlos Jabur; Felipe,Ionice.
Candida albicans is a potent activator of the complement system, and heat labile opsonins produced by activation of C3 (C3b and iC3b) enhance phagocytosis of C. albicans mediated by complement receptors. In this study we treated mouse serum with supernatants from cultures of a protease producer strain of C. albicans and evaluated the ability of this serum to enhance phagocytosis of C. albicans. Cell-free supernatants from cultures of C. albicans were concentrated 5 fold and added to mouse serum for 30 min at 37ºC, before using this serum for opsonization of glutaraldehyde-fixed yeast cells. We observed that normal mouse serum increased about 3 fold the phagocytosis of C. albicans by mice peritoneal macrophages, whereas supernatant-treated serum did not...
