Bonamiosis was first reported in association with mass mortality of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany. The disease rapidly spread to all of the oyster farming areas in France but also in other European countries. The French flat oyster production, which already suffered from another protozoan disease, marteiliosis, decreased from 5500 mt in 1979 to less than 2000 mt after 1980. In 2001, about 350 French farms sell 1650 mt of flat oysters. This production mainly relies on natural spat collection which specially occurs in Quiberon bay. One third of this spat is transferred from South to North Brittany for further growth. Quiberon bay constitutes an interesting site regarding the surveillance of bonamiosis because of the... |

The protozoan Bonamia ostreae (Ascetospora) is the etiological agent of bonamiosis, or hemocyte disease of the European fiat oyster, Ostrea edulis (Pichot et al., 1980). Since this infection was first reported from the coast of Brittany (Comps et al., 1980), the parasite has spread rapidly along the French Atlantic coasts (Grizel & Tigé, 1982), and in the European countries including the UK, Holland, lreland and Spain (Bannister & Key, 1982; Van Banning, 1982; Polanco et al., 1984). Under the EEC Council Directive 91/67, this parasitic protozoan is included in list II of Annex A. Serious pathogen agents for molluscs that should be obligatorily declared are placed in this list |

Research on bonamiasis, an epizootic disease of the edible oyster Ostrea edu/is caused by the protozoan Bonamia ostreae, is discussed in relation to oyster fanning, research technology, epizootiology, and management. Morphological and infectious characteristics of the parasite are described. Recent progress in isolation and purification of the parasite have permitted investigations into host defense mechanisms, parasite infectivity, and the development of a mol1usc-pathogen mode!. |

Bonamia ostreae is a protozoan, affiliated to the order Haplosporidia and to the phylum Cercozoa. This parasite is intracellular and infects haemocytes, cells notably involved in oyster defence mechanisms. Bonamiosis due to the parasite B. ostreae is a disease affecting the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis. The strategies used by protozoan parasites to circumvent host defence mechanisms remain largely unknown in marine bivalve molluscs. In the present work, in vitro experiments were carried out in order to study the interactions between haemocytes from O. edulis and purified parasite. B. ostreae. We monitored cellular and molecular responses of oyster haemocytes by light microscopy, flow cytometry and real-time PCR 1, 2, 4 and 8 h p.i. Light microscopy was used... |

Bonamiosis due to the parasite Bonamia ostreae has been associated with massive mortality outbreaks in European flat oyster stocks in Europe. As eradication and treatment are not possible, the control of the disease mainly relies on transfer restriction. Moreover, selection has been applied to produce resistant flat oyster families, which present better survival and lower prevalence than non-selected oysters. In order to better understand the mechanisms involved in resistance to bonamiosis, cellular and molecular responses of 2 oyster groups (selected oysters and wild-type oysters) were analyzed in the context of experimental injection and cohabitation infections. Cellular responses including non-specific esterases detection, ROS production and... |

Faecal samples from 79 wild boars (Sus scrofa scrofa) were examined by sedimentation method, zinc sulfate flotation method, and centrifugal flotation in sugar solution for endoparasites research. The results showed that 97.5% of the samples were positive for helminths and/or protozoa as follows: strongilides (70.9%), Ascaris suum (46.9%), Trichuris suis (29.1%), Metastrongylus sp. (12.6%), Strongyloides ransomi (3.8%), Balantidium coli (38.0%), Entamoeba spp. (15.2%), Giardia spp. (1.3%), Blastocystis sp. (12.6%). The frequency of Entamoeba was higher in young animals. Coccidian oocysts were observed in 59.5% samples and five species of Eimeria and one Isospora were recovered: Eimeria scabra (31.9%), E. deblieck (31.9%), E. perminuta (23.4%), E. cerdonis... |

Bonamiosis due to the parasite Bonamia ostreae is a disease affecting the flat oyster Ostrea edulis. B. ostreae is a protozoan, affiliated to the order of haplosporidia and to the cercozoan phylum. This parasite is mainly intracellular, infecting haemocytes, cells notably involved in oyster defence mechanisms. Suppression subtractive hybridisation (SSH) was carried out in order to identify oyster genes differentially expressed during an infection of haemocytes with B. ostreae. Forward and reverse banks allowed obtaining 1104 and 1344 clones respectively, among which 391 and 480 clones showed a differential expression between both tested conditions (haemocytes alone versus haemocytes in contact with parasites). ESTs of interest including genes involved in... |

Bonamiosis due to the parasite Bonamia ostreae has been associated with massive mortality in flat oyster stocks in Europe. Control of the disease currently relies on disease management practices and transfer restriction. Previously, massal selections based on survival to challenge to infection with B. ostreae have been applied to produce flat oyster families with resistant progeny. In an attempt to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in disease resistance, differentially expressed sequence tags between resistant and wild Ostrea edulis haemocytes, both infected with the parasite, were identified using suppression subtractive hybridisation. Expression of seven ESTs has been studied using quantitative reverse-transcriptase PCR. The base-line... |

This work investigated the relationship between water characteristics and infestation of protozoan parasites, Icthyophthirius multifiliis and Trichodina sp., in swordtails (Xiphophorus helleri) and platy (Xiphophorus maculates) collected in an ornamental fish farm in São Paulo, Brazil. Fish were monthly collected from ponds and tanks for one year. The prevalence rates in fish from tanks and ponds were, respectively, 34.2% and 22.5% for I. multifiliis, and 13% and 54.2% for Trichodina sp. Increased electric conductivity and pH provoked reduction of I. multifiliis infestation. Low oxygen concentration increased Trichodina sp. infestation. The use of salt to increase the electric conductivity of water was a method to control I. multifiliis. Low dissolved... |
