Abschätzung von Bestandeseigenschaften in Leguminosengras-Gemengen mit nichtdestruktiven Methoden Organic Eprints
Fricke, Thomas; Wachendorf, Michael.
To describe spatial heterogeneity of crop properties, non-destructive methods can be helpful in capturing whole field data sets. This paper shows examples of different sensor methods that have been evaluated to measure biomass and legume content in legume-grass mixtures. Biomass has been estimated using vegetation indices (NDVI, SR, EVI and REIP) calculated from spectral reflectance measurements in greenhouse experiments. The index REIP has been used to identify species composition as well. Furthermore, biomass values can be derived from ultra sonic measurements of sward heights. To quantify legume contents in short term leys, which is important for forage quality and nitrogen flows, image analysis tools have been used in different experi-ments with good...

Advantages and disadvantages of different break crops in organic grass/arable rotations (OF0143) Organic Eprints
Anon,.
This is the final report of Defra project OF0143. Choice of break crops to grow in addition to cereals and the fertility building phase is crucial to the agronomic and economic success of organic arable rotations. There are four specific functions that a break crop may perform, namely: addition, conservation and cycling of nutrients; pest and/or disease control; weed control and improvement in soil physical characteristics. Individual break crops may perform one or several of these functions. A good break crop must also produce satisfactory yields, be of marketable quality and produce an economic return for the farmer. This project analysed the overall suitability of new break crops by simultaneous assessment of key agronomic, economic and environmental...

An integrated study of the development of organic rice cultivation in the Camargue (France)- Organic Eprints
Mouret, J.C.; Hammond, R.; Dreyfus, F.; Desclaux, D.; Marnotte, P.; Mesléard, F..
In the Camargue, rice and durum wheat are associated in rotations that have an ambivalent ecological impact: on the one hand, these two crops contribute to the preservation of the surrounding ecosystem, while on the other hand, when cropped intensively, they can threaten the ecological equilibrium of this protected area. In this context, organic agriculture would seem to be an alternative adopted by a certain number of producers and processors. However, the pioneers of this practice encounter numerous problems, both agronomic and economic. The study presented here aims: to construct a pluridisciplinary approach to analyse the conditions of the development of organic cereal cultivation in the Camargue: to identify the principal factors that limit the...

Winterling, Andrea; Ostermaier, Miriam; Uhl, Johannes; Urbatzka, Peer.

Due to the high nitrogen requirements, oil seed rape should be cultivated after rye-grass-clover mixtures (Böhm 2007). But in this case oil seed rape is in competition with wheat, because wheat has a high N-requirement as well. So, the crop rotation must be organized in another way, so that there is no competition between oil seed rape and wheat. In two-year field trials at the experimental farm of the Institute of Organic Farming (FAL) in Trenthorst the hypothesis was tested, whether oil seed rape with an undersown white clover is a better preceding crop to wheat compared to oil seed rape without underseed. Additionally, the yield was compared to “wheat after ryegrass-clover mixture”. The results showed a higher yield of wheat after oil seed rape with...

Bestimmung der N-Fixierung unterschiedlicher Wintererbsengenotypen im Vergleich zu einer Sommererbse in Rein- und Gemengesaat Organic Eprints
Urbatzka, M Sc Peer; Graß, Dr. Rüdiger; Schüler, Dr. Christian; Trautz, Prof. Dieter; Heß, Prof. Jürgen.
In organic farming the cultivation of leguminous crops is one of the most important sources of nitrogen (N). However, regarding the amount of N fixed, there are hardly any published data for winter peas. Therefore, the N fixation of five regular leafed winter peas types and one semi-leafless spring pea cultivar in single and mixed cropping (with winter rye spring cereals respectively) was measured in four successive growing seasons (2003/04 – 2006/07) at the experimental farm of the University of Kassel and in two consecutive vegetation periods (2005/06 - 2006/07) at the experimental farm of the University of Applied Science in Osnabrueck. The amount of N fixed was calculated according to the extended difference method at the beginning of...

Choice of cereal and pulse species and varities Organic Eprints
Taylor, B.R.; Cormack, W.F..
All the main cereal crops - wheat, barley and oats, triticale, rye and spelt - can be grown organically in the UK. Until recently, the most important organic cereals were wheat and oats, with premiums paid for samples which reached milling quality. In the last year or two, more livestock farmers than arable farmers have converted to organic production so that feed grain has been in short supply, and the range of cereals grown organically has increased. New markets have also developed. Malted organic barley has been used for some time to produce beer, and now barley malt and wheat have been processed into organic whisky.

Clover:cereal bi-cropping for organic farms (OF0173) Organic Eprints
Clements, Dr R. O..
This is the final report of Defra project OF0173. The attached main report starts with a more detailed summary, from which this text is extracted. IGER, IACR and others developed a system for growing cereals, especially for whole crop silage, that enables either greatly reduced or zero levels of N fertilizer and agrochemicals to be used. The system is simple and straightforward and relies on direct drilling of the cereal into an established understorey of white clover. The white clover understorey becomes permanent and perennial and successive cereal crops are drilled into it, harvested and re-drilled each year. The clover provides N for the cereal crop and the gross changes in crop architecture that occur (a) encourage large populations of predatory...

Dry matter yields and quality of organic lupin/cereal mixtures for wholecrop forage Organic Eprints
Azo, W M; Lane, G P F; Cannon, N C; Davies, W P.
In view of climate change predictions and the general desirability of increasing the amount of home grown protein, a case exists for the investigation of lupins and lupin/cereal bicrop combinations as wholecrop forage on organic farms. A replicated randomised block trial is described which took place at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, in 2005. This involved spring sown blue, white and yellow lupins, millet, wheat and triticale and lupin/cereal bi-crops. Data for dry matter yields for wholecrop silage, crude protein, MAD fi bre content and estimated ME, are presented for a single harvest. It is concluded that white lupins and white lupin bi-crops with spring wheat or triticale offer the best prospects for a viable wholecrop forage crop in an...

Effect of annual self-reseeding legumes on subsequent crops (particularly durum wheat) into a long-term rotation program under organic farming. Organic Eprints
WEHBE, Elias.
Soil nitrogen fertility management is a major concern in organic farming. Nitrogen fixation by legumes is a potential solution especially in multi-annual crop rotation program. This study aims at assessing the effect of fifteen legume cultivars on wheat as third subsequent crop and at identifying the most efficient and suitable cultivars for a long-term rotation program.T. subterraneum cv. York and T. glanduliferum cv. Prima induced the best effects on wheat, particularly on total biomass, number of grains, dry matter production and increased yield by 670% and 567% respectively compared to the control. They showed also, together with Trifolium subterraneum cv. Dalkeith and Trifolium incarnatum cv. Caprera, to be the most efficient over the whole rotation...

Effect of undersowing winter wheat with legumes on the yield and quality of subsequent winter triticale crops Organic Eprints
Fuchs, R.; Rehm, A.; Salzeder, G.; Wiesinger, K..
The study presents results of a series of trials investigating the effects of undersowing nitrogen fixing crops (legumes) into winter wheat on the performance of the subsequent crop winter triticale. Trials were carried out between 2003 and 2006 at two sites in southern Bavaria, Germany. All species tested - black medic, birdsfoot trefoil, red clover, white clover and a legume-grass mixture - proved to be suitable. Compared to the “not-undersown” control treatment the undersown N-fixing crops had no statistically significant effect on the yield, protein content and other grain quality characteristics of the winter wheat crop, except for one site where protein yield was significantly higher in one year. There was also no difference in disease incidence...

Rinnofner, T.; Friedel, J.K.; Farthofer, R.; Pietsch, G.; Freyer, B..

How to optimise symbiotic nitrogen fixation in organic crop rotations Organic Eprints
Schmidtke, Knut.
By means of the analysis results and calculation methods presented in this contribution it could be shown that many possibilities exist in Organic Agriculture to optimise the symbiotic N2 fixation activity of cultivated legumes through agricultural management. Here stronger impacts on the level of the symbiotic N2 fixation activity through the choice of a site-related legume type and procedures to increase the yield of legumes have to be expected. By means of a decrease in plant available nitrogen in the soil during the cultivation of legumes the symbiotic N2 fixation activity of the legumes can be additionally increased.

Intercropping - the practical application of diversity, competition and facilitation in arable and organic cropping systems Organic Eprints
Jensen, Erik Sten; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Kinane, Julia; Andersen, Mette Klindt; Jørnsgaard, Bjarne.
Intercropping (IC) is the simultaneous cultivation of more than one crop species on the same piece of land. The IC practice offers many advantages to organic agriculture in terms of resource use, yield stability, weed management, and increased diversification of agroecosystems. Field experiments carried out at two sites in Denmark over three consecutive cropping seasons showed that ICs of cereals and grain legumes gave higher yields, less weeds, lower infection with plant diseases, and higher grain quality compared to corresponding sole crops.
