Binary logit analysis was used to identify the factors influencing adoption of Global Positioning System (GPS) guidance systems by cotton farmers in 11 Mid-south and Southeastern states. Results indicate that adoption was more likely by those who had already adopted other precision-farming practices and had used computers for farm management. In addition, younger and more affluent farmers were more likely to adopt. Farmers with larger farms and with relatively high yields were also more likely to adopt. Education was not a significant factor in a farmer’s decision to adopt GPS guidance systems. |

In the course of economic development there is a general downward trend of agricultural employment, although structural change in agriculture is often delayed. In the EU-15, agricultural employment decreased by -2.3% p.a. (measured in regular persons) and -3.0% p.a. (measured in annual working units) between 1995 and 2000. In some of the new EU Member States, employment in agriculture plummeted in the early 1990s, whereas in others it increased during the first years of transition and has served as a social buffer in times of economic hardship. The most important determinants of agricultural employment changes are labor saving technical progress, the macroeconomic environment, the farm structure, socio-economic characteristics of the farmer and... |

This paper analyses the spatial pattern of the agricultural yield data. Using the spatial statistics, it is possible to estimate some parameters of the semivariogram to study the problem of the systemic risk, which has great implications for the crop insurance program in Brazil. In particular, the “range” parameter was estimated. This parameter measures the distance, in which the spatial correlation tends to zero. For the empirical analysis, county yield data was used provided by IBGE, for soybean and corn, in the state of Paraná, through 1990 and 2002. The results showed that there is spatial dependence in every year analysed, going to zero in relatively long distances (in km). |

There is no universally accepted definition of the category of "rural area" in Hungary and this issue is the subject of controversy. The EU or OECD standards cannot be fully applied due to unique national characteristics. As a) the role of agriculture in the national economy has drastically decreased in the last 15 years in Hungary - due to the political transition and globalisation, and as b) this decreasing importance causes heavy and pressing problems, especially in agricultural and ex-agricultural areas and regions, job loss is a characteristic sign of the underprivileged areas, and that affects mainly the villages and rural people who have lost their jobs in the agricultural sector. Main goal of the author's Ph.D. research is an analysis of the... |

The second pillar of the CAP is expected to play a key role for rural development – especially for less favoured areas. Conservation of biodiversity and the cultural landscape and the competitiveness of farmers are important objectives addressed by different measures. The importance of the second pillar has been heavily emphasised for all the different objectives. The aim of the present paper is to analyse the programs of the second pillar for the federal state of Hesse, Germany. To give an overview of the programs the design of the measures is illustrated in detail. The programs are assessed from a theoretical point of view. Furthermore, the programs are classified into three axes in regard to the main objectives. The findings are threefold. Firstly, the... |

The development of innovative functional food products is a major trend in today's food industry. The growth of this industry is driven by increased consumer awareness of their own health deficiencies, increased understanding of the possible health benefits of functional foods, development in formulation technologies, a positive regulatory environment and changing consumer demographics and lifestyles. While there has been a proliferation of omega-3 products such as milk, eggs, yogurt, and margarine in the Canadian food market, very little is known about consumers of omega-3 products. In our study we use ACNielsen HomescanTM data combined with ACNielsen Panel TrackTM survey data to develop profiles of omega-3 consumers in Canada. The focus of the study is... |

The implementation of a crop insurance program is an old requirement of the agricultural sector. After the failure of the National Crop Insurance Company (CNSA), in the period of 1954 through 1966, the federal government started to stimulate the agricultural insurance market. Aiming increase the crop insurance operations the Government approved Law n. 10.823 which subsidize part of the premium paid by farmers. The nature of this work is essentially analytical, such that any quantitative model has been established. Over the years, government risk management tools, such as, Proagro and some private insurance companies have had unsatisfactory financial results suggesting that the current crop insurance model presents signals of decline. This article shows the... |
