CHANGES IN NUTRITIONAL QUALITY OF FOOD PRODUCT OFFERINGS AND PURCHASES: A CASE STUDY IN THE MID-1990's AgEcon
Mojduszka, Eliza M.; West, Dennis B.; Caswell, Julie A.; Harris, James Michael.
This report provides a new economic approach and methodology for analyzing nutritional quality change in manufacturers' food product offerings and food products purchased using a case study of five food product categories in the mid-1990's. Two approaches were used to analyze nutritional quality change in product offerings. The first approach uses a composite nutritional index to measure changes. A second approach, nutrient-by-nutrient analysis, was also used to measure quality change. Overall, the nutrition index analysis showed no significant change in the average nutritional quality of products offered for sale in the five categories.

Growth and quality of mangosteen seedlings (Garcinia mangostana L.) in response to the application of humic acids Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Gomes Júnior,Gedeon Almeida; Pereira,Rafaela Alves; Sodré,George Andrade; Gross,Eduardo.
Abstract The time of formation of mangosteen seedlings propagated by seeds can be considered as the biggest difficulty in the seedling production system of this species. Considering that the use of humic acids as a growth promoter has been well documented in some species, the objective of this work was to evaluate the growth of mangosteen seedlings in response to the application of humic acid (HA) doses extracted from vermicompost (0; 2; 20; 40; 200 mg C L-1). Growth rate was determined using the following variables: stem diameter, plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, stem dry matter, leaf dry matter, shoot dry matter, root dry matter, total dry matter and Dickson quality index . The dose 150 mg C L-1 was the one that approached the maximum values...

Implementation of a new index to assess intertidal seaweed communities as bioindicators for the European Water Framework Directory ArchiMer

An index CCO (cover, characteristic species, opportunistic species) has been developed for the implementation of the European Water Framework Directory (WFD) in coastal waters, using intertidal macroalgal communities as bio-indicator (Biological Quality Element). CCO is based on the calculation of three metrics corresponding to the global cover of macroalgal communities (metric 1), the number of characteristic species per topographic level/seaweed community (metric 2) and the cover of opportunistic species (metric 3). The final rating is obtained by pooling the scores of the three metrics. Results are given for 32 sites in 29 water bodies, grouped into four biogeographic regions along the Channel–Atlantic coasts of France. Over the six-year study, most of...

Matrix management interfers in yield and quality of cocoa seedlings Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Pereira,Rafaela Alves; Gomes Júnior,Gedeon Almeida; Rodrigues,Eliandro Malta; Sodré,George Andrade; Sacramento,Célio Kersul do.
Abstract The influence of two managements on yield and quality of plagiotropic mini-cuttings of four cacao clones was evaluated. The design was completely randomized in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme with 4 clones x 2 mother plant management (apical pruning and bending), with 10 replicates and one plant as experimental unit. Seedlings used were propagated by rooting of semi-woody cuttings of plagiotropic branches and at seven months of age, two seedlings of each clone were transplanted to 12 L pots filled with organomineral substrate. After transplantation, the apex of one of the plants was cut based on the count of the first six leaves from the apex. For bending, stems were folded and horizontally fixed. The first collection of mini-cuttings was performed 30...

Physiology and quality of Eugenia dysenterica DC seedlings grown in vermiculite and rice husk-based substrates Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Mota,Clenilso Sehnen; Araújo,Eduard Lucas Souza; Silva,Fabiano Guimarães; Dornelles,Paulo; Freiberger,Mariângela Brito; Mendes,Giselle Camargo.
Abstract Eugenia dysenterica DC is a fruiting species endemic to the Brazilian Cerrado, belonging to the Myrtaceae family and popularly known as Cagaiteira. It has medicinal and antifungal properties, and has an important function in the ecosystem. Nevertheless, there are few studies about the maintenance of this species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth, nutrition, quality and physiology of E. dysenterica seedlings grown in fine vermiculite and rice husk-based substrates in the following combinations: 1:0, 3:1, 1:1, and 1:3, in addition to Trimix® commercial substrate and vermiculite only. The physical attributes of substrates (dry and moist densities, available water, remaining water, aeration space and total porosity), seedling emergence...
