Analisis del comportamiento de cultivos en tepetate t3 incorporado a la agricultura de temporal, Texcoco (Mexico) IRD

The purpose of this study is to precise the conditions of agricultural reclamation of tepetate in the eastern part of the Mexico valley (Texcoco). The Tepetate is a compact and sterile material. The lack of nitrogen, carbon and the poor biological activity limit the possibility of plant development. But after the use of heavy machinery and terracing, it is possible, under certain conditions, to use this new soil for agriculture. From 1993 until 1996, we compared native soil and different treatments applied to the tepetate reclaimed, such as the deepness of the reclamation, the use of chemical/biological fertilisers, the mono-culture/associated cultures, the tillage practices of the new soil on 6 different terraces of 700 m2. En el medio agropecuario ecuatoriano, la cangahua (formacion procedente de las cenizas volcanicas endurecidas) ocupa amplias areas donde el desarrollo de todos los cultivos se ve limitado por la insuficiente fertilidad y la fuerte sensibilidad a la erosion, que caracterizan este tipo de suelo. Con en fin de aumentar la superficie agraria util y en general de garantizar un correcto manejo del recurso suelo, se han establecido algunos programas de rehabilitacion de la cangahua. El cultivo de la cangahua en el medio campesino tradicional en el Ecuador IRD

In the Callejon Interandino (the plateau between the two cordilleras), where eroded volcanic soils (cangahua) are present, a survey has been done to estimate the proportion and methods of reclamation of these soils. Other topics such as family structure, agricultural production unit (PU) area, crops and yields have also been studied. results have shown that small farmers have a low educational level and small PU. Nearly all of them are poor. In these conditions cangahua reclamation is practised in order to increase the PU area. Although crop yields are very low, they are quite similar to those obtained from cropland soils. (Résumé d'auteur).

Los costos de rehabilitacion de los suelos volcanicos endurecidos IRD

Reclamation and conservation methods for agriculture and reforestation in indurated and eroded volcanic soils are reported. Mechanized methods used specially in the realization of progressive development terraces has lower costs than flat terraces built simultaneously to the sub-soiling. Some reforestation methods used in Mexico have a cost similar to those of reforestation in non indurated soils of Ecuador. (Résumé d'auteur).

Los sistemas agropecuarios de produccion en tepetates, en cuatro comunidades del altiplano mexicano IRD

The agricultural rehabilitation of tepetates, indurated and sterile volcanic tuffs located along the mexican neovolcanic ridge, is technically possible. However, it is necessary to know in detail the agro-socioeconomical factors of the peasant communities which have these kind of lands, to give them technical answers appropiate to local realities. The studies of 4 communities located in the states of Mexico. Tlaxcala, Jalisco and Michoacan, show that the climatic conditions are mostly difficult (long dry season, irregular rains, early frosts). In the highlands of Ecuador, the response to an increase in alimentary needs leads to extend cultivable lands. Under these conditions, the reclamation of the pyroclastic hardened volcanic soils by mechanical woorks is a vital necessity. However the new soil material which has been roturated and disagregated, presents such a susceptibility that it becomes important to protect it against erosion.
