Shear-flow induced detachment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae from stainless steel: influence of yeast and solid surface properties Inra

The present study focused on the shear-induced detachment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in adhesive contact with a 316L stainless steel surface using a shear stress flow chamber, with a view to determining the respective influence of the yeast surface properties and the support characteristics. The effect of cultivation of S. cerevisiae yeast cells on their subsequent detachment from the solid surface was particularly investigated. In order to elucidate the role of stainless steel, non-metallic supports were used as control, covering a broad range of surface properties such as surface free energy and roughness: polypropylene (hydrophobic), polystyrene (mildly hydrophobic, similar to stainless steel) and glass (hydrophilic). Space-time adaptation for patch-based image sequence restoration Inra

We present a novel space-time patch-based method for image sequence restoration. We propose an adaptive statistical estimation framework based on the local analysis of the bias-variance trade-off. At each pixel, the space-time neighborhood is adapted to improve the performance of the proposed patch-based estimator. The proposed method is unsupervised and requires no motion estimation. Nevertheless, it can also be combined with motion estimation to cope with very large displacements due to camera motion. Experiments show that this method is able to drastically improve the quality of highly corrupted image sequences. The effect of mandibular gland extirpation on the longevity and attractiveness of workers of queen honey bees, apis mellifera National Institute of Agronomic Research

The mandibular glands were extirpated from 6 of 12 mated, sister queen honey bees, 1 month old. Two of the modified and five of the untreated queens survived after being held for about 11 months in otherwise normal colonies. The modified queens were almost completely unattractive to worker bees at the end of the experiment. The brood quantity and quality in the colonies headed by modified queens was not very dissimilar from those found in the check colonies.
