Methionine catabolism in Arabidopsis cells is initiated by a gamma-cleavage process and leads to S-methylcysteine and isoleucine synthesis Inra

Despite recent progress in elucidating the regulation of methionine (Met) synthesis, little is known about the catabolism of this amino acid in plants. We present here several lines of evidence indicating that the cleavage of Met catalyzed by Met -lyase is the first step in this process. First, we cloned an Arabidopsis cDNA coding a functional Met -lyase (AtMGL), a cytosolic enzyme catalyzing the conversion of Met into methanethiol, α-ketobutyrate (αKB) and ammonia. AtMGL is present in all the Arabidopsis organs and tissues analyzed, except in quiescent dry mature seeds, thus suggesting that AtMGL is involved in the regulation of Met homeostasis in various situations. Quantitative 31P NMR spectroscopy of lignins from transgenic poplars Inra

Milled wood lignins isolated from genetically modified poplar trees were studied by quantitative 31P NMR spectroscopy, in combination with thioacidolysis and mild alkaline hydrolysis. The genetictransformation of the trees included down regulation of CAD and COMT enzyme activities.These analyses confirmed that moderate CAD down-regulation does not substantially alter ligninstructure. In contrast, severe CAD deficiency alters the lignin structure more profoundly by decreasingthe syringyl/guaiacyl ratio and increasing the degree of condensation of the lignin. Themost severe alterations were observed in the lignins from the COMT-transformed lines.

Sesquiterpenes in the frontal gland secretions of nasute soldier termites from new guinea Inra

In five New Guinea Nasutitermes (N. gracilirostris, N. novarumhebridarum, N. torresi, N. triodiae, and an undescribed species N. sp.F), we have detected and identified 10 sesquiterpenes. Eight of these compounds (β)-elemene,β-caryophyllene,α-humulene,α-muurolene,γ-selinene,β-selinene, germacrene-A, and γ2-cadinene) were identified by GC and GC-MS (EI). Two uncommon sesquiterpenes, (5R*, 7R*, 10S*)-selina-4(14),11-diene and (5R*, 7R*, 10S*)-selina-3,11-diene, were identified by GC, GC-MS (EI, CI), GC-FTIR, and mono- and bidimensional NMR. Whereas in most species sesquiterpenes are present in low or trace amounts, inN. novarumhebridarum the sesquiterpenic fraction of soldier frontal gland secretion is equal to that of the monoterpenes.
