Using the single-point ground wave (GW) radar data at Shensi Station and the water level data at three stations (Shengsi, Luchaogang and Daishan), the authors obtained the flow vectors from the radial velocity of GW radar observation, and calculate four sub-tidal harmonic constants (O1, K1, M2 and S2). The tidal characteristics derived from the GW radar dataset agreed well with those from the tidal gauge data. The authors also analyzed the tidal energy flux and tidal energy dissipation rate. There was a good relationship between the tidal energy dissipation rate and topography. The study showed a good way to calculate tidal energy dissipation rate using GW radar data. |

CFOSAT (the China France Oceanography Satellite) is a joint mission from the Chinese and French Space Agencies, devoted to the observation ocean surface wind and waves so as to improve wind and wave forecast for marine meteorology, ocean dynamics modeling and prediction, climate variability knowledge, fundamental knowledge of surface processes. Currently under Phase D (manufacturing phase), the launch is now planned for mid-2018 the later. The CFOSAT will carry two payloads, both Ku-Band radar: the wave scatterometer (SWIM) and the wind scatterometer (SCAT). Both instruments are based on new concepts with respect to existing satellite-borne wind and wave sensors. Indeed, one of the originalities of CFOSAT is that it will provide simultaneously and in the... |

Attenuation from clouds and precipitation hinders the use of Ka-band in SARs, radar altimeters and in satellite link communications. The NASA-JAXA Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, with its core satellite payload including a dual-frequency (13.6 and 35.5 GHz) radar and a multifrequency passive microwave radiometer, offers an unprecedented opportunity for better quantifying such attenuation effects. Based on four years of GPM products, this article presents a global climatology of Ka-band attenuation caused by clouds and precipitation and analyses the impact of the precipitation diurnal cycle. As expected, regions of high attenuation mirror precipitation patterns. Clouds and precipitation cause two-way attenuation at 35.5 GHz in excess of 3 dB... |

Multi-year field measurements of sea surface Ka-band dual-co-polarized (vertical transmit–receive polarization (VV) and horizontal transmit–receive polarization (HH)) radar Doppler characteristics from an oceanographic platform in the Black Sea are presented. The Doppler centroid (DC) estimated using the first moment of 5 min averaged spectrum, corrected for measured sea surface current, ranges between 0 and ≈1 m/s for incidence angles increasing from 0 to 70∘ . Besides the known wind-to-radar azimuth dependence, the DC can also depend on wind-to-dominant wave direction. For co-aligned wind and waves, a negative crosswind DC residual is found, ≈−0.1 m/s, at ≈20 ∘ incidence angle, becoming negligible at ≈ 60 ∘ , and raising to, ≈+0.5 m/s, at 70∘ . For our... |

High-resolution satellite images of ocean color and sea surface temperature reveal an abundance of ocean fronts, vortices and filaments at scales below 10 km but measurements of ocean surface dynamics at these scales are rare. There is increasing recognition of the role played by small scale ocean processes in ocean-atmosphere coupling, upper-ocean mixing and ocean vertical transports, with advanced numerical models and in situ observations highlighting fundamental changes in dynamics when scales reach 1 km. Numerous scientific publications highlight the global impact of small oceanic scales on marine ecosystems, operational forecasts and long-term climate projections through strong ageostrophic circulations, large vertical ocean velocities and mixed layer... |

Many researchers have shown the potential of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images for agricultural applications, particularly for monitoring regions with limitations in terms of acquiring cloud free optical images. Recently, Brazil and Germany began a feasibility study on the construction of an orbital L-band SAR sensor referred to as MAPSAR (Multi-Application Purpose SAR). This sensor provides L-band images in three spatial resolutions and polarimetric, interferometric and stereoscopic capabilities. Thus, studies are needed to evaluate the potential of future MAPSAR images. The objective of this study was to evaluate multipolarized MAPSAR images simulated by the airborne SAR-R99B sensor to distinguish coffee, cotton and pasture fields in Brazil.... |
