ABSTRACT Pork is the most consumed animal protein around the world. The production levels are significant, which results in the generation of large amounts of slaughter waste. Such waste is often disposed of improperly in agricultural areas, causing environmental imbalance by the contamination of soil and water sources with metals and pathogenic organisms. This study evaluates the phytotoxic effects of pig slaughterhouse waste in natura and after stabilization processes on lettuce (Lactuca sativa Linnaeus, 1753), radish (Raphanus sativus Linnaeus, 1753), and rice (Oryza sativa Linnaeus, 1753), in addition to shoot nutrient contents. To do this, the waste was evaluated through phytotoxicity tests on lettuce, radish, and rice plants in natura (PSWin) as well... |

This study aimed to evaluate different crops and plant species planted after soybeans for one year, in terms of their potential to inhibit the occurrence of weed species. The following crops that were planted as second crop after soybeans were evaluated: (1) corn (Zea mays) planted at spacing of 90 cm between rows, intercropped with Brachiaria ruziziensis in the inter-rows; (2) sunflower (Helianthus annuus); (3) crambe (Crambe abyssinica); (4) radish (Raphanus sativus); (5) rapeseed (Brassica napus); and (6) winter fallow - no plantation after soybeans. Phytosociological characterization of weed species was carried out at the pre-planting of soybeans in the following cropping season. Estimations of relative abundance, relative frequence, relative dominance... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to determine the effect of moisture content on rupture strength, maximum strength, and rupture deformation for fixed deformations, and determine the proportional deformation modulus of seeds of Raphanus sativus subjected to compressive loading. Seeds with a moisture concentration of 0.31, 0.18, 0.12, 0.08, and 0.05 decimal (dry basis, d.b.) were maintained in the natural resting position and were subjected to uniaxial compressive loading between two parallel plates at an application rate of 0.002 m s-1. The rupture strength necessary to deform the seeds was increased from 15.03 to 27.08 as moisture levels decreased. Deformation was increased from 0.12-3 m to 0.15 × 10-3 m as moisture content decreased. The maximum... |
