A routine electrocardiogram cannot be used to determine the size of myocardial infarction in the rat BJMBR
Bonilha,A.M.M.; Saraiva,R.M.; Kanashiro,R.M.; Portes,L.A.; Antonio,E.L.; Tucci,P.J.F..
Nine lead electrocardiograms of non-infarcted (N = 61) and infarcted (N = 71) female Wistar rats (200-250 g) were analyzed in order to distinguish left ventricle myocardial infarction (MI) larger than 40% (LMI) from MI smaller than 40% (SMI). MI larger than 40% clearly caused a deviation of ÂQRS and ÂT from normal values of 270-360 degrees to 90-270 degrees. Infarcted rats showed Q wave in D1 larger than 1 mm with 94% sensitivity and 100% specificity. The sum of QRS positivity in V1, V2 and V6 lower than 10 mm identified MI with 82% sensitivity and 100% specificity. The data showed that MI can be easily and reliably diagnosed by electrocardiogram in the rat. However, contradicting what is frequently believed, when specificity and sensitivity were analyzed...

Acute blood volume expansion delays the gastrointestinal transit of a charcoal meal in awake rats BJMBR
de-Oliveira,G.R.; Gondim,F. de-A.A.; da-Graça,J.R.V.; Xavier-Neto,J.; Dantas,R.P.; Gondim,R.B.M.; Santos,A.A.; Rola,F.H..
The present study evaluates the effect of blood volume expansion on the gastrointestinal transit of a charchoal meal (2.5 ml of an aqueous suspension consisting of 5% charcoal and 5% gum arabic) in awake male Wistar rats (200-270 g). On the day before the experiments, the rats were anesthetized with ether, submitted to left jugular vein cannulation and fasted with water ad libitum until 2 h before the gastrointestinal transit measurement. Blood volume expansion by iv infusion of 1 ml/min Ringer bicarbonate in volumes of 3, 4 or 5% body weight delayed gastrointestinal transit at 10 min after test meal administration by 21.3-26.7% (P<0.05), but no effect was observed after 1 or 2% body weight expansion. The effect of blood volume expansion (up to 5%...

Analysis of fracture healing in osteopenic bone caused by disuse: experimental study BJMBR
Paiva,A.G.; Yanagihara,G.R.; Macedo,A.P.; Ramos,J.; Issa,J.P.M.; Shimano,A.C..
Osteoporosis has become a serious global public health issue. Hence, osteoporotic fracture healing has been investigated in several previous studies because there is still controversy over the effect osteoporosis has on the healing process. The current study aimed to analyze two different periods of bone healing in normal and osteopenic rats. Sixty, 7-week-old female Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: unrestricted and immobilized for 2 weeks after osteotomy (OU2), suspended and immobilized for 2 weeks after osteotomy (OS2), unrestricted and immobilized for 6 weeks after osteotomy (OU6), and suspended and immobilized for 6 weeks after osteotomy (OS6). Osteotomy was performed in the middle third of the right tibia 21 days after tail...

Behavioral cross-sensitization between testosterone and fenproporex in adolescent and adult rats BJMBR
Conceição,C.Q.; Engi,S.A.; Cruz,F.C.; Planeta,C.S..
The abuse of psychoactive drugs is considered a global health problem. During the last years, a relevant number of studies have investigated the relationship between anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) and other psychoactive drugs. AAS, such as testosterone, can cause a dependence syndrome that shares many features with the classical dependence to psychoactive substances. Pre-clinical evidence shows that there are interactions between testosterone and psychoactive drugs, such as cocaine. However, few studies have been performed to investigate the effect of repeated testosterone treatment on behavioral effects of amphetamine derivatives, such as fenproporex. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of repeated testosterone...

Beneficial effects of Ginkgo biloba extract on insulin signaling cascade, dyslipidemia, and body adiposity of diet-induced obese rats BJMBR
Banin,R.M.; Hirata,B.K.S.; Andrade,I.S.; Zemdegs,J.C.S.; Clemente,A.P.G.; Dornellas,A.P.S.; Boldarine,V.T.; Estadella,D.; Albuquerque,K.T.; Oyama,L.M.; Ribeiro,E.B.; Telles,M.M..
Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE) has been indicated as an efficient medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2. It remains unclear if its effects are due to an improvement of the insulin signaling cascade, especially in obese subjects. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of GbE on insulin tolerance, food intake, body adiposity, lipid profile, fasting insulin, and muscle levels of insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1), protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP-1B), and protein kinase B (Akt), as well as Akt phosphorylation, in diet-induced obese rats. Rats were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) or a normal fat diet (NFD) for 8 weeks. After that, the HFD group was divided into two groups: rats gavaged with a saline vehicle (HFD+V), and rats...

Blood glucose regulation during fasting in rats under food restriction since birth BABT
Vitoriano,Adriana de Souza; Malta,Ananda; Barrena,Helenton Christian; Furlan,Maria Montserrat Diaz Pedrosa; Bazotte,Roberto Barbosa; Gazola,Vilma Godoi.
The effect of severe food restriction since birth on regulation of fasting glycemia in male Wistar rats was investigated. The control group (CG) had free supply of chow, while the restriction group (RG) received 50% of the amount ingested by the CG. The experiments were done in adult (60 days) overnight fasted rats in which glycemia, liver free glucose levels and hepatic glycogen concentration were measured. In part of the experiments in situ liver perfusion was done. The results showed that livers from the RG had higher glycogenolysis rates but lower gluconeogenesis rates from L-alanine (10 mM). Since RG showed maintained glycemia during fasting, it could be concluded that livers from RG produced glucose preferentially from glycogenolysis in detriment of...

Calcium bioavailability of raw and extruded amaranth grains Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Ferreira,Tania Aparecida; Arêas,José Alfredo Gomes.
Calcium bioavailability of raw and extruded amaranth grains was assessed in a biological assay in rats. Rats were fed for 28 days on diets in which raw or extruded amaranth was the only calcium source, compared to a control diet with calcium carbonate. Calcium and phosphorous levels were determined in the rats' serum during the experimental period and in the bones at the end of the experiment. Amaranth extrusion increased its calcium bioavailability, assessed by tibia and femur weights and calcium and phosphorous content of the bones. Apparent calcium absorption index, the force needed to break the bones and bone densitometry of both extruded and raw amaranth were the same, though different from the control group. The results show that amaranth can be a...

Can calories from ethanol contribute to body weight preservation by malnourished rats? BJMBR
Aguiar,A.S.; Da-Silva,V.A.; Boaventura,G.T..
Our objective was to compare the use of calories from ethanol by well-nourished and malnourished rats in terms of body weight. Female Wistar rats weighing 170-180 g at the beginning of the study were used. The animals were divided into two groups (N = 12 each): group W received water ad libitum and group E an ethanol solution ad libitum as the only source of liquid throughout the experiment. The concentration of ethanol was increased weekly from 0 to 5, 10, 20 and 40% (v/v). In the well-nourished phase (A), all rats received food ad libitum (AW and AE). Ethanol treatment (AE) was then interrupted and water was offered to both groups. After 2 weeks both AW and AE rats were submitted to food restriction (50% of group AW food consumption), thus initiating the...

Pinto,MCL; Melo,MB; Cruz,ML; Verçosa Junior,D; Melo,MM.
Accidental envenomation caused by Tityus serrulatus scorpions is very common in Brazil and may result in serious cardiorespiratory alterations that are frequently fatal to children. In the present study, the effects of T. serrulatus venom on the cardiorespiratory system of recently weaned male Wistar rats were evaluated. Fifteen animals were distributed into three groups (n = 5). The control group A received 400 μL ultrapure water by subcutaneous injection, while the experimental groups B and C were injected with scorpion venom (100 and 450 μg, respectively, in 400 μL water). Electrocardiogram (ECG) traces were obtained prior to the experiment, at five-minute intervals up to 30 minutes after treatment. At 40 minutes after envenomation, the animals had...

Central lead administration inhibits water intake and sodium appetite in rats BJMBR
De-Castro-e-Silva,E.J.; Castro,L.; Luz,C.P.; Ferreira,H.; Lima,A.K.S.; Souza,F.S.F.; Maldonado,I.; Macêdo,D.F.; Ferreira,M.G.; Bandeira,I.P.V.; Amor,A.L.M.; Carvalho,F.L.Q.; Rocha Jr.,M.A.; Fregoneze,J.B..
We have demonstrated that acute third ventricle injections of lead acetate (PbAc) exert a powerful antidipsogenic effect and induce a significant increase in renal sodium excretion. In the present study we confirm the antidipsogenic effect of lead and demonstrate that central administration of this metal, in minute amounts, significantly reduces salt intake both during dehydration and after central angiotensinergic stimulation. Adult male Wistar rats had the third ventricle cannulated seven days before the experiments. During this period they had free access to distilled water and hypertonic saline solution (1.5%). After a 24-h period of fluid deprivation, experimental animals received third ventricle injections of PbAc (0.3, N = 8 and 3.0 nmol/rat, N =...

Classification of different degrees of adiposity in sedentary rats BJMBR
Leopoldo,A.S.; Lima-Leopoldo,A.P.; Nascimento,A.F.; Luvizotto,R.A.M.; Sugizaki,M.M.; Campos,D.H.S.; da Silva,D.C.T.; Padovani,C.R.; Cicogna,A.C..
In experimental studies, several parameters, such as body weight, body mass index, adiposity index, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, have commonly been used to demonstrate increased adiposity and investigate the mechanisms underlying obesity and sedentary lifestyles. However, these investigations have not classified the degree of adiposity nor defined adiposity categories for rats, such as normal, overweight, and obese. The aim of the study was to characterize the degree of adiposity in rats fed a high-fat diet using cluster analysis and to create adiposity intervals in an experimental model of obesity. Thirty-day-old male Wistar rats were fed a normal (n=41) or a high-fat (n=43) diet for 15 weeks. Obesity was defined based on the adiposity index; and...
