Applicability of Moringa oleifera Lam. pie as an adsorbent for removal of heavy metals from waters AGRIAMBI
Gonçalves Junior,Affonso C.; Meneghel,Ana P.; Rubio,Fernanda; Strey,Leonardo; Dragunski,Douglas C.; Coelho,Gustavo F..
This study evaluated the efficacy of moringa seeds (Moringa oleifera Lam.) as an adsorbent material for removing toxic heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, and chromium from contaminated solutions. The effect of the adsorbent mass was investigated at two pH conditions (5.0 and 7.0). The optimized conditions were 0.300 g of adsorbent at pH 5.0, used for the isotherms construction, and linearized according to Langmuir and Freundlich models. Results showed that cadmium adsorption was similar in both the models used. For lead, the Freundlich model had the best adjustment and chromium was better adjusted by the Langmuir model. It was concluded that the adsorbent was effective in the remediation of solutions containing cadmium, lead and chromium, thus, its use as...

Faria,Letícia de Abreu; Luz,Pedro Henrique de Cerqueira; Macedo,Felipe Barros; Tonetti,Paulo Sergio; Ferraz,Marcos Roberto; Mazza,Jairo Antônio; Vitti,Godofredo Cesar.
ABSTRACT High contents of plant-available selenium in the soil in the form of selenate, resulting from natural or anthropogenic action, jeopardizes agricultural areas and requires research for solutions to establish or re-establish agricultural or livestock operation, avoiding the risk of poisoning of plants, animals and humans. The purpose was to evaluate sulfur sources in the form of sulfate, e.g., ammonium sulfate, calcium sulfate, ferric sulfate, in the remediation of tropical soils anthropogenically contaminated with Se under the tropical forage grass Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst. ex A. Rich.) Stapf cv. Marandu. More clayey soils are less able to supply plants with Se, which influences the effects of S sources, but it was found that high soil Se...

Effect of sewage sludge and sawdust in association with hybrid ryegrass (Lolium x hybrydum Hausskin.) on soil macroaggregates and water content Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Sandoval E,Marco; Celis H,José; Bahamondes P,Carlos.
Chilean soils degradation is a serious problem affecting directly the productivity of most of the crops. Some evidence indicates sewage sludge can improve soil physical properties, especially when combined with sawdust. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different mixtures of sewage sludge (LU) and sawdust (RA) on water-stable aggregates and available water content of a degraded Alfisol cropped with hybrid ryegrass (Lolium x hybridum Hausskn.), under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was a completely randomized with a factorial arrangement of 2 x 9 (ryegrass x rates of sludge and sawdust). Treatments were 25 and 50 Mg LU ha-1 mixed with 10, 25, and 50 Mg RA ha-1. Ratio mixtures of LU/RA were set in pots with hybrid...

Elevated CO2 Concentrations and Water Stress Affect the Ability of Italian Ryegrass to Remediate Herbicides and Enhance its Allelopathic Effect Planta Daninha
SILVEIRA,L.P.; FEIJÓ,A.R.; BENETTI,C.; REFATTI,J.P.; FIPKE,M.V.; CAMARGO,E.R.; ZISKA,L.H.; AVILA,L.A..
ABSTRACT: The long temporal persistence of select herbicides negatively impacts crops sown in succession to irrigated rice. One way to reduce these compounds in the soil over time is through phytoremediation. However, elevated CO2 concentrations may interfere with the phytoremediation process. Another consequence of climate change is the production of allelopathic compounds by forage species used as remedial agents. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of elevated CO2 concentration and drought stress on the remediation of soil samples contaminated with imazapyr + imazapic herbicides by Italian ryegrass and any subsequential affect on the allelopathic effect of this species. We report that the increasing CO2 decreased the phytoremediation potential of...

Estudo preliminar para a remediação de áreas rurais após um acidente nuclear ou radiológico. Repositório Alice
ROCHEDO, E. R. R.; SILVA, D. N. G.; DE LUCA, C.; ROCHEDO, P. R. R.; WASSERMAN, M. A. V.; PEREZ, D. V..

Functionalized Charcoal as a Buffering Matrix of Copper and Zinc Availability Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Guimarães,Gelton Geraldo Fernandes; Giroto,Amanda Soares; Teixeira,Breno Cardoso; Vergütz,Leonardus; Cantarutti,Reinaldo Bertola.
ABSTRACT: High copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) contents in soil can cause phytotoxicity to plants and contaminate surface and groundwater, with negative effects on agriculture and the environment. Functionalized charcoal (OCh) has high cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the ability to adsorb Cu and Zn and control their availability in the soil and water. An adsorption study at two pH levels was carried out to evaluate increasing Cu and Zn sorption capacity provided by the functionalization process of a charcoal. In addition, a kinetics study of competitive and non-competitive adsorption-desorption of Cu and Zn in OCh was also evaluated. The results showed that functionalized charcoal (Ch) increased CEC 8.7 times due to an increase in carboxyl and phenolic...

Growth of seedlings of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (l.) millsp), wand riverhemp (Sesbania virgata (cav.) pers.), and lead tree (Leucaena leucocephala (lam.) de wit) in an arsenic-contaminated soil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Dias,Luiz Eduardo; Melo,Roseli Freire; Mello,Jaime Wilson Vargas de; Oliveira,Juraci Alves; Daniels,Walter Lee.
Phytoremediation strategies utilize plants to decontaminate or immobilize soil pollutants. Among soil pollutants, metalloid As is considered a primary concern as a toxic element to organisms. Arsenic concentrations in the soil result from anthropogenic activities such as: the use of pesticides (herbicides and fungicides); some fertilizers; Au, Pb, Cu and Ni mining; Fe and steel production; coal combustion; and as a bi-product during natural gas extraction. This study evaluated the potential of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), wand riverhemp (Sesbania virgata), and lead tree (Leucaena leucocephala) as phytoremediators of soils polluted by As. Soil samples were placed in plastic pots, incubated with different As doses (0; 50; 100 and 200 mg dm-3) and then sown...

Removal of synthetic sex hormones by hydrothermal carbonization Anais da ABC (AABC)
MORAIS,RUITER L.; SANTIAGO,MARIÂNGELA F.; ZANG,JOACHIM W.; FONSECA-ZANG,WARDE A.; SCHIMIDT,FERNANDO.
ABSTRACT One of the most prominent fields of environmental chemistry is the study and the removal of micro-pollutants from aqueous matrices. Analytical techniques for their identification and quantification are becoming more sensitive and comprehensive and, as a result, an increasing number of drugs have been detected in environmental samples. However, the literature shows that conventional treatments for drinking water and wastewater are not sufficient for remove these compounds. This study aims to check whether the process of hydrothermal carbonization (CHT) is effective in removing the synthetic sex hormones: ethinyl estradiol, gestodene and cyproterone acetate from aqueous samples. The system used in CHT basically consists of a pressurized reactor made...

The role of green rust in the environment: a review AGRIAMBI
Chaves,Lucia H. G..
Iron(II)-iron(III) hydroxy-salts known as green rusts (GRs) initially were identified and studied as corrosion products of steel and iron. Recently they were discovered as minerals present in hydromorphic soils and sediments. Different studies have suggested that GRs, due to their high reactivity, play an important role in the fate and transport of many contaminants in suboxic soils, sediments and aquifers where microbial reduction rates are limited by low carbon content. Also, GRs have considerable potential for applications such as water-purification processes and gas adsorbents. However, as GRs are only a transient state during the reduction of ferric iron and are converted to more stable forms, it is still necessary to continue studies about their...

The Value of Reducing Cancer Risks at Contaminated Sites: Are More Heavily Exposed People Willing to Pay More? AgEcon
Tonin, Stefania; Alberini, Anna; Turvani, Margherita.
We use conjoint choice questions to investigate people’s tastes for cancer risk reductions and income in the context of public programs that would provide for remediation at abandoned industrial contaminated sites. Our survey was self-administered using the computer by persons living in the vicinity of an important contaminated site on the Italian National Priority List. The value of a prevented case of cancer is €2.6 million, but this figure does vary with income, perceived exposure to contaminants, and opinions about priorities that should be pursued by cleanup programs.

Tradescantia bioassays as monitoring systems for environmental mutagenesis: a review. Repositório Alice
RODRIGUES, G. S.; MA, T.; PIMENTEL, D.; WEINSTEIN, L.H..
Since the early studies on the genetic effects of chemical and physical agents, species and clones of Tradescantia have been used as experimental subjects, by virtue of a series of favorable genetic characteristics. Bearing just six pairs (2n = 12) of large, easily observable chromosomes, cells from almost every part of the plant, from the root tips to the developing pollen tube, yield excellent material for cytogenetic studies. As a consequence of the intensive use of Tradescantia in genetic studies, a series of genetic characteristics have been found that offer opportunities for the detection of agents affecting the stability of the genome. At least five such characteristics have been selected as endpoints for the establishment of assays to evaluate...

Zeta potential and electrophoretic mobility for the recovery of a saline soil with organic amendments Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Méndez,Judith Prieto; García,Francisco Prieto; González,Nallely Trejo; Santillán,Yolanda Marmolejo; Sandoval,Otilio Arturo Acevedo.
ABSTRACT The accumulation of salts in the soil profile produces conditions that affect the growth of crops. The effects of these conditions on crops and the intensity of these effects depend on the quantity and type of salts that predominate and are also influenced by soil characteristics and climate, among other aspects. The salinization of agricultural soils is a serious problem facing agriculture today. The use of organic amendments has increased in recent years, acting on the texture of the soil, correcting compaction or granularity problems, and influencing chemical and/or biological reactions. The objectives of this work were to analyze the use of compost and vermicompost using different analysis techniques to determine the influence of conditions on...
