As many other insects with a restricted diet, the citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, which vector the causing agent of the Huanglongbing, the bacteria Candidatus Liberibacter spp., is intimately associated with symbiotic microorganisms. These mutualist symbionts play a key role on their host nutritional ecology, and are vertically transmitted to the progeny. However, despite the role symbionts play on host development and reproduction, and the growing opportunities of exploitation of the association insect-symbiont to control insect vectored-pathogens, there are very few studies on the host reproductive biology and on the symbiont transovarial transmission. Therefore, we aimed at analyzing the ovary development during D. citri adulthood, and at... |

It is well known that geographic variation oceurs in life history characteristics among populations of lizards. Variations in life histories found in some studies are possibly adaptations to environmental pressures. In southwestern México, the reproductive characteristics of the endemic species Sceloporus formosus have been poorly studied throughout its geographic range. We used specimens from scientific collections to describe male and female reproductive eyeles and sexual dimorphism of S. formosus. Other viviparous Sceloporus from high elevations show sexual dimorphism, with males being larger in many morphological characteristics than females. We therefore expected that S. formosus would show sexual dimorphism. However, we found no sexual dimorphism.... |

This study was carried out to investigate the reproductive aspects of the flying fish, Hirundichthys affinis Günther, 1866 considering their importance in the fish production of the Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. Fish samples were collected from the Municipality of Caiçara do Norte, northern coast of the state, during the period of April, 1999 to April, 2000. The fish were measured, weighed, dissected and the gonads were examined to separate the sex and to determine the stage of maturation. Histological studies were done for microscopic characterization of the gonads. The results indicated that H. affinis had a sexual proportion of 1:1; condition factor was inversely related to the gonadosomatic index during the reproductive phase; and the highest for... |

This report compiles 17 short and illustrated syntheses concerning the natural strategies of reproduction and the artificial control of the reproductive process for the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, the japanese oyster, Crassostrea gigas, the mussels, Mytilus edulis and My ti/us galloprovincialis, the scallop, Pecten maximus. An additional syntheses is presented, as a comparison within molluscs, which are the main research topics at IFREMER concerning the artificial control of the reproductive processes in Marine Fish. Three main subjects are documented : 1. the ecophysiology of the natural period of reproduction in the wild, 2. the methods developed in the hatcheries for the artificial control of the reproductive periods, the gametes collection and the... |

ABSTRACT Ariids such as Genidens genidens are particularly susceptible to overfishing because of their complex reproductive mechanisms, which result in slow replenishment of stocks. In this study, we obtained data about the reproductive ecology of the catfish G. genidens in the Guanabara Bay estuary, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, providing supporting information for management of its fishery. The sex ratio, mean size of each sex at first sexual maturation, and female fecundity were determined and the reproductive period was characterized. The males:females ratio was 1:2. The fecundity is low and increases proportionally to the females’ growth in total length and weight. The breeding season occurs during the warmest months of the year, with spawning extending... |

Natural history of hyperdominant tree populations in the Brazilian Amazon Region is still unknown in plant science. Pentaclethra macroloba (Willd.) Kuntze (Fabaceae) is a hyperdominant tree species which has multiple uses and its seeds are extensively explored to extract medicinal oil. We evaluated the phenological cycles and floral visitors of P. macroloba and the effect of the daily tide of the Amazon River on the phenophases. Phenophases of flower bud, anthesis flowers, immature fruit, ripe fruit, seed dispersal, new leaf, mature leaf, and leaf fall of 29 trees in the Northeast of the Brazilian Amazon were monitored during 28 months. Hydrometeorological data of rainfall, maximum temperature and flood height on the tree trunk were obtained. Generalized... |

In order to describe some aspects of the population ecology of Bryconamericus stramineus in the Guiraí River basin, upper Paraná River basin, samples were taken bimonthly from October 2006 to August 2007 at seven sites in the basin. A total of 960 individuals, including 532 females, 316 males, and 112 of undetermined sex, were collected. A significant variation in the sex ratio was observed (Χ2 = 32.82; p < 0.001). Females were larger (59.7 mm) than males (58.9 mm); however, males showed a larger angular growth coefficient (b) than females. It was estimated that 50% of females were sexually mature at 36.4 mm. The highest rate of ovary development was observed in October, while in June 2007 no mature females were found. Mean fecundity was estimated at... |
