Bionutritional efficiency of crossbred beef cattle finished on feedlot andslaughtered at different body weights R. Bras. Zootec.
Mello,Renius; Queiroz,Augusto César de; Faria,Marcelo Henrique de; Henrique,Douglas Sampaio; Maldonado,Fabiana.
The objective of this study was to assess the bionutritional efficiency of crossbred F1 Red Angus × Nellore (½ RA ½ N) and F1 Blonde D'Aquitaine × Nellore (½ BA ½ N) young bulls finished on feedlot and slaughtered at 480, 520 and 560 kg body weight. A completely randomized experimental design in a 2 × 3 (genetic group × slaughter weight) factorial arrangement with six replicates was used. The ½ BA ½ N young bulls showed higher kidney, pelvic and inguinal fat (KPIF, kg and % BW) and lower multivariate biological nutritional index (MBNI) and residual feed intake than ½ RA ½ N young bulls. The young bulls slaughtered at heavier weight had larger ribeye area (cm²), fat thickness over the 12-13th rib, fat thickness over the rump, KPIF (kg and % BW), dry matter...

Feed efficiency of Nellore cattle selected for postweaning weight R. Bras. Zootec.
Castilhos,André Michel de; Branco,Renata Helena; Corvino,Tatiana Lucila Sobrinho; Razook,Alexander George; Bonilha,Sarah Figueiredo Martins; Figueiredo,Leopoldo Andrade de.
Two Nellore herds were compared, one selected for greater postweaning weight and the other, control, selected for average postweaning weight, to evaluate the effects of 29 years of selection on feed efficiency. Sixty Nellore males (41 selected and 19 control) averaging 205 kg and 267 days of age were evaluated in individual pens during performance test. Performance and dry matter intake were used to determine the following feed efficiency traits: feed conversion; residual feed intake; residual gain; partial growth efficiency; relative growth rate and Kleiber ratio. After the 112-day experimental period, control animals showed lower body weight when compared to selected animals, however, they did not differ for dry matter intake (% of body weight), rib-eye...

Genetic and phenotypic parameters for feed and water efficiency in Senepol cattle. Repositório Alice
MENEZES, G. R. de O.; GOMES, R. da C.; RIBAS, M. N.; TORRES JUNIOR, R. A. de A.; FERNANDES JUNIOR, J. A.; PEREIRA, G. M.; FAVERO, R.; SILVA, L. O. C. da.
The sustainability of beef production in the world demands the identification and selection of efficient animals that can produce more products with fewer inputs. Feed accounts for around 50-70% of variable costs of beef cattle systems, depending on the level of intensification adopted. Water has been traditionally considered an inexpensive, readily available, and renewable natural resource. However, growing concerns about the availability of drinkable water have increasingly pushed pressure on livestock production, especially cattle. Thus, genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated for feed and water efficiency in Senepol cattle in order to evaluate their use as selection criteria. Records on 587 Senepol heifers, involved in performance tests, were...

Genetic variability in residual feed intake in rainbow trout clones and testing of indirect selection criteria ArchiMer
Grima, Laure; Quillet, E; Boujard, Thierry; Robert Granie, C; Chatain, Beatrice; Mambrini, M.
Little is known about the genetic basis of residual feed intake (RFI) variation in fish, since this trait is highly sensitive to environmental influences, and feed intake of individuals is difficult to measure accurately. The purpose of this work was (i) to assess the genetic variability of RFI estimated by an X-ray technique and (ii) to develop predictive criteria for RFI. Two predictive criteria were tested: loss of body weight during feed deprivation and compensatory growth during re-feeding. Ten heterozygous rainbow trout clones were used. Individual intake and body weight were measured three times at three-week intervals. Then, individual body weight was recorded after two cycles of a three-week feed deprivation followed by a three-week re-feeding....

In search for indirect criteria to improve feed utilization efficiency in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Part II: Heritability of weight loss during feed deprivation and weight gain during re-feeding periods ArchiMer

Selective breeding to improve residual feed intake (RFI) in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is a major goal that would optimize economic gain while minimizing the environmental impact of production. Due to the difficulty in accurately measuring individual feed intake, no selective breeding program has yet been started. In a previous study, we identified a criterion phenotypically related to RFI variations: the loss of weight during feed deprivation, FD. Moreover, an additional composite criterion (CC) integrating both FD and weight gain during subsequent re-feeding (RF) was closely related to RFI, even though the relationship was only close to significance (P=0.06). The aim of the present study was to estimate the heritability of these two traits, in order...

In search for indirect criteria to improve residual feed intake in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Part I: Phenotypic relationship between residual feed intake and body weight variations during feed deprivation and re-feeding periods ArchiMer

No commercial breeding programs have yet started to improve feed utilization efficiency in fish, mainly because of the difficulty in accurately measuring individual feed intake in fish reared in groups. Our general goal is to propose indirect criteria to be used for breeding of commercial lines. In a previous study undertaken with rainbow trout clones, a genetic correlation was detected between residual feed intake (RFI), and body weight variation during successive periods of feed deprivation (FD) and re-feeding (RF). To assess the pertinence of such indirect criteria for future breeding programs, we set up a large experiment using sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax), a recently domesticated species with broad genetic diversity. The objectives of the present...

Phenotypic association between feed efficiency and feeding behavior, growth and carcass traits in Senepol cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Guimarães,André Lasmar; Mercadante,Maria Eugênia Zerlotti; Canesin,Roberta Carrilho; Branco,Renata Helena; Lima,Maria Lucia Pereira; Cyrillo,Joslaine Noely dos Santos Gonçalves.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the associations between feed efficiency and feeding behavior, growth and carcass traits in Senepol cattle. A total of 137 animals were evaluated. Of these animals, 36 males were evaluated in a second test, totaling 173 records (initial age of 466±96 days and initial weight of 426±104 kg). Residual feed intake (RFI) was calculated as the difference between observed and expected dry matter intake, estimated by regression of dry matter intake on average daily gain and metabolic body weight (BW0.75), and the animals were classified as negative (high efficiency) and positive RFI (low efficiency). The mean RFI was -0.838±0.078 and 0.797±0.075 kg DM day-1 for negative and positive RFI animals, respectively,...

Residual feed intake in beef cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Arthur,J P.F.; Herd,R.M..
Providing feed is a major input cost in beef production, hence improvements in the efficiency of feed utilisation will reduce the cost of production. Residual feed intake (RFI) is a measure of feed efficiency, and is defined as the difference between an animal's actual feed intake and its expected feed intake based on its size and growth. It is independent of the level of production, and the lower the value the more efficient the animal is. This paper examines the current state of knowledge on RFI. Available information indicates that postweaning RFI is moderately heritable, and that selection for low RFI will result in progeny that consume less feed for the same level of production as progeny of high RFI cattle. Under ad libitum feeding, RFI is...

ABSTRACT We evaluated performance, non-carcass components, and carcass characteristics of crossbred Texel lambs in different categories of residual intake and gain (RIG). We assessed 77 crossbred (¼ Pantaneira and ¾ Texel) non-castrated animals in two study phases. The first phase included 47 lambs with an initial average weight of 29.9±5.5 kg, and the second phase included 30 lambs with initial average weight of 22.4±3.3 kg. Dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily gain (ADG) were evaluated for 70 days. Animals were divided into three groups in terms of efficiency: efficient (high RIG), intermediate (medium RIG), or inefficient (low RIG), based on the standard deviation of the mean for the RIG variable. We measured the yield of non-carcass components,...

Test post-weaning duration for performance, feed intake and feed efficiency in Nellore cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Castilhos,André Michel de; Branco,Renata Helena; Razook,Alexander George; Bonilha,Sarah Figueiredo Martins; Mercadante,Maria Eugênia Zerlotti; Figueiredo,Leopoldo Andrade de.
This study was conducted to determine optimum test duration for measuring performance, feed intake and feed efficiency. Sixty young Nellore bulls were submitted to feeding performance test and fed in individual pens to determine feed intake and performance over 112 days. Body weight was determined every 28 days, after fasting of water and feed for 16 hours. Changes in variance, relative variance and Pearson and Spearman correlations among data from shortened test periods (28, 56 and 84 days) and full test period (112 days) were used to determine optimum test duration. Test duration for average daily gain, dry matter intake, feed:gain ratio and residual feed intake could be shortened to 84, 28, 84 and 84 days, respectively, without reducing significantly...
