DYNAMIC ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF A RESIDUE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN COTTON AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Lohr, Luanne.
Residue management system (RMS), comprised of no till cultivation, a winter cover crop, and poultry litter, could be an alternative to existing management system in cotton production in the Georgian Piedmont. We compare the productivity and profitability of RMS with the current system over time, focusing on the role of organic matter. Using dynamic bioeconomic modelling technique, we show that the net return and land value difference between these two systems increase as the terminal period increases. We conclude that if financial and capital markets based on organic matter work efficiently, farmers will choose RMS in cotton production.

ECONOMIC EFFECT OF IMPERFECT INFORMATION ON CONSERVATION DECISIONS AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Lohr, Luanne.
Cotton farmers in the Piedmont region incorrectly believe conservation systems with winter cover crop and no-till cultivation yield less than conventional systems. We model the effect of organic matter on productivity and show how ignoring this effect causes returns to be underestimated. Farmers with imperfect information underinvest in residue management.

Evaluation of no-till drill performance under various residue management methods in wheat cropping in the south of Iran CIGR Journal
Roozbeh, Majid.
Heavy crop residue on the soil surface impedes no-till drill performance and subsequent crop production in conservation tillage systems and therefore limit its adoption by farmers. Therefore, a field study was conducted to determine the effects of various residue management methods on no-till drill performance. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in five replications. The residue management systems were in four levels of leaving (R.M1), removing (R.M2), chopping (R.M3) and disking (R.M4). Factor analysis was used to group and identify the most effective indicators of drill performance. The results showed that various residue management methods had a significant effect on sowing depth, speed of emergence, effective field capacity, and...

Returning Winter Cover Crop Residue Influences Soil Aggregation and Humic Substances under Double-cropped Rice Fields Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Tang,Haiming; Xiao,Xiaoping; Tang,Wenguang; Wang,Ke; Li,Chao; Cheng,Kaikai.
ABSTRACT Residue management in cropping systems may improve soil quality. However, there are few studies on the effects of residue management on soil aggregation and carbon content in the humin (C-HUM), humic acid (C-HAF) and fulvic acid (C-FAF) fractions in South China. Therefore, the effects on soil aggregation and on the C-HUM, C-HAF, C-FAF from incorporating winter cover crop residues in a double-cropped rice (Oryza sativa L.) system in South China fields were studied. The experiment has been conducted since winter 2004. Five winter cropping systems were used: rice-rice-ryegrass (Ry-R-R), rice-rice-Chinese milk vetch (Mv-R-R), rice-rice-potato (Po-R-R), rice-rice-rape (Ra-R-R) and rice-rice with winter fallow (Fa-R-R). The results indicated that the...
