Application of a micro-respirometric volumetric method to respiratory measurements of larvae of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Wolowicz, Maciej; Latala, Adam; Brown, Craig; Cragg, Simon.
The application of a simple, fast and reliable volumetric microrespirometric method to assess respiration of bivalve larvae is discussed. As a model, C. gigas larvae of various sizes were used. Metabolic activity of veliger larvae was assessed by measuring respiratory rate for use in ecophysiological modelling. As an example of the application of this approach, additional measurements of veliger respiratory rates were carried out to assess the effect on larval metabolism of different concentrations of leachate from wood treated with chromated copper-arsenate (CCA). Veligers of Crassostrea gigas (length from 95 to 331 pm) were fed with a mixture of Isochrysis galbana) and Chaetoceros pumilum cells. Experiments were performed in a 20 degreesC constant...

Characterization of starch from different non-traditional sources and its application as coating in ‘Palmer’ mango fruit Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Rodrigues,Antonio Augusto Marques; Santos,Luana Ferreira dos; Costa,Rayssa Ribeiro da; Félix,Débora Tamara; Nascimento,José Henrique Bernardino; Lima,Maria Auxiliadora Coêlho de.
ABSTRACT Yam, cassava, jackfruit seed and mango seed kernel have potential for the extraction and use as starch in the food industry of starch or for the formulation of biodegradable coatings. As a biodegradable coating, starch can be applied in fruits characterized by a fast maturation, such as mango, which requires technologies to increase its shelf life. The aim of this study was to characterize starch from four non-traditional sources and to evaluate their potential as coating for ‘Palmer’ mango fruit. Starches used were extracted from cassava, mango seed kernel, jackfruit seed, and yam, and had their physical, optical, and chemical properties characterized for later use as coatings of ‘Palmer’ mango fruit. Fruits were coated with 3% cassava starch,...

Evaluation of thermorregulatory capacity of dairy buffaloes using infrared thermography REA
Sevegnani,Kelly B; Fernandes,Danielle P. B; Silva,Silvia H. Modenese-Gorla da.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the thermoregulatory response of dairy buffaloes in pre-milking and post-milking. To identify animal thermoregulatory capacity, skin surface temperatures were taken by an infrared thermometer (SST), a thermographic camera (MTBP) as well as respiratory rate records (RR). Black Globe and Humidity Index (BGHI), radiating thermal load (RTL) and enthalpy (H) were used to characterize the thermal environment. Artificial Neural Networks analyzed those indices as well as animal physiological data, using a single layer trained with the least mean square (LMS) algorithm. The results indicated that pre-milking and post-milking environments reached BGHI, RR, SST and MTBP values above thermal neutrality zone for...

Costa,Emellinne Ingrid de Sousa; Carvalho,Gleidson Giordano Pinto de; Pires,Aureliano José Vieira; Dias,Carina Anunciação dos Santos; Cerutti,Weiler Giacomazza; Oliveira,Ronaldo Lopes; Barbosa,Analívia Martins; Maranhão,Camila Maida de Albuquerque.
This experiment was conducted to study the substitution of soybean meal with peanut cake in the supplement by assessing the feeding behavior and the interaction between the thermal environment and the physiological responses of eight crossbred cows with an average live weight of 500 kg. Cows were divided into two 4 × 4 Latin squares and managed on pasture. The peanut cake was included at the levels of 0, 330, 660, and 1,000 g kg-1 in the supplement as a replacement for soybean meal. The feeding behavior variables were not affected by the levels of peanut cake. No differences were found for the physiological parameters of the animals with the replacement of soybean meal for peanut cake in the supplements. Peanut cake can replace up to 100% soybean meal in...

Physiological responses of caprines raised under different types of covering REA
Kawabata,Celso Y.; Jesus,Lindalva de A. de; Silva,Ana Paula V. da; Sousa,Thiago V. R. de; Cruz,Luis F. B. da.
Thermal discomfort inside facilities is one of the factors responsible for low productivity of caprines in the Brazilian Northeast region, because inadequate weather conditions can cause elevated rectal temperature, increased respiratory rate, decreased food ingestion and reduced production. The present paper aimed to study the behavior of physiological thermoregulation of the animals (respiratory rate - RR and rectal temperature - RT) at four different times of the day (8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.) and their relation to bioclimatic indexes (Temperature Humidity Index - THI, Black Globe Humidity Index - BGHI and Radiant Heat Load - RHL) in order to determine whether the type of covering used in the animals facilities (ceramic covering - CC, asbestos...

Post-harvest quality of papaya coated with polivinilic alcohol and maize starch Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Pigozzi,Mariana Teixeira; Silva,Vanessa Mendes; Mendes,Fabrícia Queiroz; Oliveira,Isadora Rebouças Nolasco de; Moraes,Allan Robledo Fialho e; Lopes,Everaldo Antônio.
ABSTRACT Climacteric fruits have short postharvest shelf life. Coating is an alternative to minimize fruit ripening and post-harvest losses. Maize starch (S) and polivinilic alcohol - PVOH (P), isolated or blended, can be used in the formulation of coatings. However, little is known about the potential of PVOH-containing coatings in postharvest conservation of fruits. Papaya were aftercoated with 5 coating formulations: 3% starch (S), 3% PVOH (P), 2.25% S + 0.75% P, 1.5% S + 1.5% P and 0.75% S + 2.25% P. The fruits were kept at room temperature (20 ± 5 °C and 70 ± 10% RH) and physicochemical characteristics were evaluated for up to eight days. Uncoated fruits were used as control. In general, maize starch and PVOH. In general, maize starch and PVOH...

Vitti,Maria Carolina Dario; Yamamoto,Liane Kazuko; Sasaki,Fabiana Fumi; Aguila,Juan Saavedra del; Kluge,Ricardo Alfredo; Jacomino,Angelo Pedro.
The present work was carried out with the objective to determine the effect of different storage temperature on the quality of beet root minimally processed. Respiratory activity and mass loss were higher in the storage at 15ºC. No significant differences in color, total soluble solids, betacyanin and betaxanthin were observed among treatments. Based on the results obtained, the storage at 0ºC was recommended to storage beet root minimally processed and that 10 and 15ºC drastically reduced the quality of minimally processed beet roots during storage.

Распределение живого и мёртвого мезозоопланктона в прибосфорских районах Чёрного и Мраморного морей: солёностная толерантность Acartia clausi и A. tonsa. IBSS Repository
