A Non-Parametric Analysis of Rice Production Efficiency in Sri Lanka AgEcon

This article investigates the production efficiency of rice farming in Sri Lanka using cross section survey data of 90 farms. Past studies on rice farming have mostly focused on technical efficiency (TE). Here, we examine technical efficiency, allocative efficiency (AE) and cost efficiency (CE) using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. On average, the farms were 87% technically efficient; irrigated farms were more efficient (88%) than rain-fed farms (82%). Average cost, allocative and scale efficiencies were 73%, 84% and 87%. EXPLAINING ECONOMIC INEFFICIENCY OF NEPALESE RICE FARMS: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION AgEcon

Efficiency has been proven to be an important managerial tool in improving total factor productivity in agriculture. The four sources of economic inefficiency: allocative, technical, pure technical and scale inefficiency of a sample of seventy-six Nepalese rice farmers were examined using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) decomposition method. The inefficiency indices computed by the DEA were then used as the dependent variable in a Tobit (censored) regression model using decision- makers’ attributes as the explanatory variables. Technical efficiency improvement of rice farming in southern Thailand AgEcon

The objective of this study is to assess the technical efficient frontier of rice farms using input-oriented data envelopment analysis. The frontier represents the minimum applicable level of efficiency of inputs given the current level of yields, technologies, and managerial ability among the farmers which can be used as a benchmark for efficiency improvement of rice farms. Two-stage DEA methodology of efficiency analysis was applied. The empirical results revealed that the technical efficiency of rice farming in southern Thailand could be improved through reduction of inputs by 8-14 % and the current output at 3.5 tons of paddy rice per ha could be maintained. This study assessed the preference for and efficiency of land tenure contract arrangements in rice farming in West Java, Indonesia. Specifically, it examined the transaction costs associated with land tenure contracts, the land tenure contract preference, the efficiency of land tenure contracts, and the policy agenda to address the problems of land tenure efficiency. Three types of land tenure contracts were considered: sharecropping, fixed rental and mortgage. [[abstract]]精準農業是利用技術手段藉空間和時問的變異來進行耕作及田間管理,以改進農作物生產之效率及同時兼顧環境保護之應用科技,其支援相關技術主要為全球定位系統、地理資訊系統、遙感探測技術、農耕資料庫、土壤資料庫、可變率技術、自動化農機操作系統、決策支援系統、動態田問資料收集裝置、管理資訊系統、農業專家系統、產量圖等,為因應世界潮流及配合國內整體試驗研究需要,「水稻精準農業體系研究」先驅計畫特於農委會農業試驗所設置共同試驗農場,面積10.83 公頃,共分164 小區,每小區25x25 平方公尺,以農場運作為主體,辦理農場硬體規劃施設及農機整備,並引進相關概念與技術,研擬建立作業流程與管理體系,進行大面積水稻栽培。經2000-2002 年之三年六期作田問產量資料結果顯示,目前的農耕管理作業符合精準農業之需求,可供各方來年規劃進一步試驗研究之參考。 Precision agriculture is the application of technologies and principles to manage spatial and temporal variability associated with all aspects of agriculture production for the purposes of improving crop performance and environmental quality.
