ABSTRACT: Ensilage is a simple and low-cost strategy to enable long term preservation and environmentally friendly utilization of agricultural by-products, such as straws and distiller's grains (DG) for ruminants. Effect of mixing different proportions of DG and rice straw (i.e. 0, 10, 20 or 30% of DG) with or without 5% molasses addition on fermentation and chemical variables of silages was evaluated. The study was conducted as a randomized blocks design in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, with three replications, using laboratory silos of 1L capacity (n=24). Despite a significant interaction (P<0.01) between DG and molasses addition was observed for most variables, in general the increased addition of DG linearly decreased the pH value, acetic acid... |

The objective of this work was to assess the productivity and polysaccharide-protein complex content of Agaricus blazei on rice straw medium, in comparison to conventional sawdust, using four casing soils. The A. blazei strain used was BCRC36814T, purchased from the Food Industry Research and Development Institute, Hsin-Chu, Taiwan. The two media were evaluated as to A. blazei productivity, harvesting time, and production costs. The experimental design used was a randomized complete block, with four replicates. Three local casing soils - Typic Paleudult (CCe), Typic Udorthent (Tq) and Oxyaquic Paleudult (TSp) - were compared to imported peat soil (PS, Saprists, Histosols), used as the control. The productivity of A. blazei using Tq and TSp soil was... |

Vanessa Otero-Jiménez1 , Laura Murillo1 , Pilar Carreño1 , Rodrigo Mendes2 , Daniel UribeVélez1 1Agricultural Microbiology Group, Biotechnology Institute, National University of Colombia. Bogotá – Colombia. 2 Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology, Embrapa Environment, Jaguariuna – Brazil. Agricultural residues are precursors of soil organic matter, its decomposition in the field allows the entry of carbon and other nutrients into the system. However, it can also favor the proliferation of pathogens, converting it into a great challenge for producers. Among the alternatives to waste management are, burning of rice straw and/or its incorporation into the soil. However, the knowledge of the impact of these strategies on the microbial community and... |
