ABSTRACT Mixture of antagonist agents and form of application may influence in the control of root-knot nematodes. Thus, the aim of this work was to study the action of a biological product based on enzyme mixtures, Bacillus sp. and Trichoderma sp., at different concentrations on hatching, motility, mortality and reproduction of Meloidogyne incognita in tomato, considering two ways of application of the product. Eggs and second-stage juveniles (J2) of M. incognita were placed in biological product solutions at concentrations: 0, 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10, 20 and 40 g L-1. The same concentrations were applied to planting pits or to the soil surface. Afterwards, 3,692 eggs of M. incognita were inoculated in tomato crop. A significant reduction in J2 hatching of M.... |

ABSTRACT: Plants of Coffea arabica Icatu IAC 925 germplasm show resistance to Meloidogyne paranaensis under field conditions, but with variable rates of segregation. One mother plant, IAC 3, of Icatu IAC 925 was evaluated under controlled conditions through the reaction of its clones, obtained by somatic embryogenesis. Reproduction of nematodes in clones were compared with an open-pollinated progeny from the same mother plant, C. arabica cultivar Mundo Novo IAC 515-20, susceptible to nematodes, and Clone IAC 1, also susceptible and obtained by somatic embryogenesis. Open-pollinated progeny showed segregation to resistance and was classified as susceptible according to the reproduction factor. The average number of nematodes (eggs and J2) per gram of roots... |

Plants of chilli Capsicum annuum L. CM334 show a high level of resistance to Phytophthora capsici, but are susceptible to Nacobbus aberrans; such resistance has been associated with capsidiol accumulation, a sesquiterpene phytoalexin. In the present study the expression of hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase 2 gene (HMG2, associated with sesquiterpene phytoalexins biosynthesis) in CM334 chilli roots inoculated with N. aberrans and in combination with P. capsici, was determined by qRT-PCR. The levels of HMG2 transcripts were significantly reduced (p≤0.05) from -1.57 to -1.28-fold in the interaction CM334/N. aberrans; whereas in roots inoculated only with the oomycete, the accumulation of transcripts occurred earlier and at higher levels (1.52 to 3.54-fold).... |

ABSTRACT: Meloidogyne species are widely distributed in coffee growing areas in Brazil, where M. paranaensis is responsible to significant losses to the crop. One of the main management strategies is the use of resistant cultivars, such as Apoatã rootstock and cultivars IPR 100 and IPR 106. However, the parasitic relationship between coffee and M. paranaensis in cultivars carrying resistance genes has been poorly understood. The objective of this paper was to characterize the resistance response of Coffea arabica cv. IPR 106 to M. paranaensis. For this, penetration and histopathological studies were carried out using root tissues parasitized by the nematode. ‘IPR 106’ and ‘Mundo Novo’ (susceptible cultivar) seedlings were inoculated with 4,000 eggs of M.... |

Extracts of many plant species have shown nematicide activity attributable to phytochemicals present in their tissues or formed during a degradation process. Nevertheless, before the application of plant compounds in the field, it is necessary to know their effect on plant hosts. Three concentrations (1, 2.5 and 5% w/w) of dry leaves of Buddleja globosa, Drymis winteri, Eucalyptus globulus, Gevuina avellana, Laurelia sempervirens and Ugni molinae were evaluated on growth parameters (plant height, root length and leaf dry matter) in plants of Lactuca sativa infested with Meloidogyne hapla. Lettuce growth parameters were significantly affected by the interaction between the species and dry leaf tissues concentrations. Drymis winteri showed the biggest... |

The present study was focused on the parasitism of Meloidogyne species on the roots of native nursery plants from the Atlantic forest. Native plants were selected from a commercial nursery in Western Paraná, searching for the natural infection of Meloidogyne. Also, the seeds of native plants were cultivated in sterile soil and inoculated with M. incognita. In both the experiments, the number of galls and number of eggs and J2 per root, allied to the reproduction factor of M. incognita on each inoculated plant were assessed. Natural infection by M. javanica was found on Cordia ecalyculata, Citharexyllum myrianthum and Aspidosperma subincanum and by M. incognita on Croton urucurana, Lonchocarpus muehlbergianus, Tabebuia impetiginosa and T. serratifolia.... |

For this research we used 15 day-old seedlings which were transplanted to 2 L pots and inoculated with 4,000 nematode eggs plus juveniles (J2). After 60 days, the root systems were removed and the number of galls and eggs evaluated and used to calculate the nematode reproduction factor (RF). The tomato cv. Santa Cruz was used as a susceptible control. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six replications. Averages were compared using the Tukey or Scott-Knott test at 5%. For lettuce, Salad Bowl (Mimosa type), Elizabeth and Elisa (Lisa) and Vera cultivars (crisphead), the number of galls and the RF for M. javanica were statistically higher than for the control, whereas, for the other vegetable crops, the highest number of galls and eggs... |

Lettuce is the main vegetable cultivated in Brazil, in volume and in marketed value. There are ranges of diseases which may affect lettuce crops, including those caused by root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.). We evaluated the reproductive potential of Meloidogyne enterolobii in 22 lettuce cultivars. The plants were inoculated with 5,000 eggs and eventuals second stage juveniles of nematode per pot, two days after the transplanting. 'Rutgers' tomato was used as standard for inoculum viability of M. enterolobii. We evaluated, 60 days after inoculation, the gall index, egg mass index and reproduction factor (RF). The 'Ithaca', 'Raider Plus', 'RS-1397', 'L-104', 'Challenge', 'IP-11', 'Classic', 'Salinas 88', 'Vanguard 75', 'Calona' and 'Desert Queen' were... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate resistance to Meloidogyne javanica and Meloidogyne incognita race 1 and 2 in the American group of lettuce cultivars. Two days after transplanting, the plants were inoculated with 5,000 eggs and potential second-stage juveniles of the nematode under test per pot. The Rutgers tomato was used as the standard for the viability of Meloidogyne javanica and Meloidogyne incognita race 1 and 2. The variables to be evaluated were gall index, egg mass index and nematode reproduction factor, which were evaluated 60 days after inoculation. The results showed that the Ithaca, RS-1397, Raider Plus, Challenge, L-104, IP-11, Salinas 88, Calona, Desert Queen, Classic and Vanguard 75 cultivars were resistant to Meloidogyne... |

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of soil amendment with chopped (1cm²) or ground (1mm sieve) dry leaves of assa-peixe (Vernonia polyanthes), lemon-grass (Cymbopogon citratus), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora), castor (Ricinus communis), mango (Mangifera indica) or neem (Azadirachta indica) for the control Meloidogyne javanica. Into the soil (Yellow red oxisol) of each pot were added leaves (5g kg-1 of soil) and 5,000 eggs of the nematode. After seven days, one tomato seedling "Santa Cruz Kada" was transplanted to each pot. The tomato root weight, galls and eggs/root system were determined 60 days after transplant. None of the soil amendments reduced gall or eggs, when applied as leaf pieces. However, all tested plant species... |
