15N uptake fom manure and fertilizer sources by three consecutive crops under controlled conditions Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Garza,Héctor Mario Quiroga; Delgado,Jorge A.; Wong,José Antonio Cueto; Lindemann,William C..
There are several regions of the world where soil N analysis and/or N budgets are not used to determine how much N to apply, resulting in higher than needed N inputs, especially when manure is used. One such region is the North Central "La Comarca Lagunera", one of the most important dairy production areas of Mexico. We conducted a unique controlled greenhouse study using 15N fertilizer and 15N isotopic-labeled manure that was labeled under local conditions to monitor N cycling and recovery under higher N inputs. The manure-N treatment was applied only once and was incorporated in the soil before planting the first forage crop at an equivalent rate of 30, 60 and 120 Mg ha-1 dry manure. The 15N treatments were equivalent to 120 and 240 kg ha-1 (NH4)2SO4-N...

A Lagrangian numerical investigation of the origins and fates of the salinity maximum water in the Atlantic ArchiMer
Blanke, Bruno; Arhan, Michel; Lazar, A; Prevost, Gwenaelle.
The origins and fates of the Atlantic salinity maximum water (SMW), formed through excess evaporation in the tropics and subtropics of both hemispheres, are studied using monthly mean outputs of a numerical simulation of the world ocean climatological circulation. After defining formation domains from the surface salinity field and the vertical stratification, a Lagrangian technique is used to estimate the formation rates and main pathways in each hemisphere and the role of this water in the framework of the warm water return flow of the meridional overturning cell. Formation rates around 9 and 11 Sv are found in the Southern and Northern Hemispheres, respectively. While the export of the southern SMW from its formation area is realized by the western...

Absorption of nutrients by cowpea irrigated with saline water under different leaching fractions AGRIAMBI
Tagliaferre,Cristiano; Guimarães,Diogo U. G.; Gonçalves,Lorena J.; Amorim,Carlos H. F.; Campos,Willian V.; Rocha,Felizardo A..
ABSTRACT Salinity is one of the main environmental problems that negatively affect plant growth and metabolism, besides being one of the factors responsible for the decrease in the yield of crops, especially in arid and semiarid regions. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of soil salinity on the mineral nutrition of irrigated cowpea. The experiment was conducted in drainage lysimeters in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized design with seven treatments, one irrigated with freshwater (control) and six irrigated with saline water with different leaching fractions (5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40%) of the applied irrigation depth, with three replicates. The irrigation with saline water treatments did not affect significantly the contents of...

Accumulation of organic and inorganic solutes in NaCl-stressed sorghum seedlings from aged and primed seeds Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Alexandre Bosco de; Alencar,Nara Lídia Mendes; Prisco,José Tarquinio; Gomes-Filho,Enéas.
Although it has been known that the seed's physiological potential affects its response to osmoconditioning and abiotic stresses, researches involving seed aging and priming associated to abiotic stresses are scarce. The aim of this work was to evaluate the role of seed priming on salt tolerance in sorghum seedlings from seeds with two vigor levels (aged or non-aged) and to verify the organic and inorganic solute contributions as osmoregulators in NaCl-stressed seedlings from aged and primed seeds. The combinations of two seed vigor levels (aged or not), two seed types (primed or not) and two salinity levels (exposed to NaCl at 100 mM or not) were evaluated. In low physiological quality seeds (aged seeds), priming provided an attenuation of salinity's...

Acute and chronic effects of cadmium on blood homeostasis of an estuarine crab, Chasmagnathus granulata, and the modifying effect of salinity BJMBR
Rodríguez,E.M.; Bigi,R.; Medesani,D.A.; Stella,V.S.; Greco,L.S.L.; Moreno,P.A.R.; Monserrat,J.M.; Pellerano,G.N.; Ansaldo,M..
Whole body oxygen consumption and some hemolymph parameters such as pH, partial pressure of gases, level of ions and lactate were measured in the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata after both acute (96 h) and chronic (2 weeks) exposure to cadmium at concentrations ranging from 0.4 to 6.3 mg/l. In all instances, the crabs developed hemolymph acidosis, but no respiratory (increased PCO2) or lactate increases were evident. Hemolymph levels of sodium and calcium were always increased by cadmium exposure. The chronic toxicity of cadmium was enhanced at 12‰ salinity, even causing a significantly higher mortality in comparison with the higher salinity (30‰) used. A general metabolic arrest took place at 12‰ salinity in the crabs chronically exposed to...

ADDITION OF BOILER CHARCOAL WASTE TO COMPOST FOR USE AS SUBSTRATE FOR VEGETABLE SEEDLINGS REA
Lorin,Higor E. F.; Costa,Mônica S. S. de M.; Chiarelotto,Maico; Santos,Francielly T. dos; Costa,Luiz A. de M..
ABSTRACT The recovery of waste from the broiler production chain (BPC) is consistent with the principles of a circular economy. Besides turning waste into organic compost, its use as substrate for the production of vegetable seedlings further increases its economic value. However, it is necessary to adapt its characteristics to enable its use as substrate. To this end, the addition of boiler remnant charcoal wastes (BCW), another type of waste generated in the BPC, to the organic compost resulting from the composting of BPC waste with different bulking agents (BAs) was studied. The addition of BCW to agro-industrial compost reduced the electrical conductivity (EC) of substrates. Multiple linear regression showed that, of the 13 variables (physical,...

Adjustment to Salinity in Irrigation Regions: Ex Post Evaluation of the Tragowel Plains Plan AgEcon
Baird, Catherine A.; Gyles, Oliver.
An early-mid project evaluation of the benefits and costs of the Tragowel Plains Salinity Management Plan estimated the net cost after six years at A$ 5.5 million. The cumulative cash flows for the water transfer, drainage and halophyte programs were all positive with benefit to cost ratios (BCRs) of 3.2, 1.3 and 1.1. Inclusion of estimated future benefits and costs to year 30 gave BCRs of 13.7, 1.3 and 4.0 with net present values (NPVs) of A$ 18.8 million, 2.5 million and 0.4 million respectively. Net costs for other integrated programs including salinity survey, whole farm planning, facilitation of structural adjustment, revegetation and coordination of implementation reduced the NPV of the first six years of implementation to A$ 12.1 million. The water...

Advances in measuring ocean salinity with an optical sensor ArchiMer
Le Menn, Marc; De La Tocnaye, J. L. De Bougrenet; Grosso, P.; Delauney, Laurent; Podeur, Christian; Brault, P.; Guillerme, O..
Absolute salinity measurement of seawater has become a key issue in thermodynamic models of the oceans. One of the most direct ways is to measure the seawater refractive index which is related to density and can therefore be related to the absolute salinity. Recent advances in high resolution position sensitive devices enable us to take advantage of small beam deviation measurements using refractometers. This paper assesses the advantages of such technology with respect to the current state-of-the-art technology. In particular, we present the resolution dependence on refractive index variations and derive the limits of such a solution for designing seawater sensors well suited for coastal and deep-sea applications. Particular attention has been paid to...

An Ocean Theme for the IGOS Partnership OceanDocs
The Integrated Global Observing Strategy Partnership (IGOS-P) established, in 1999, a thematic approach to the implementation of the IGOS. Recognising that other themes will emerge, the “Ocean Theme” was chosen to be the “pathfinder” in this approach and an Ocean Theme Team was assembled to formulate guidance. One goal of the Ocean Theme Team is to consider and study the full range of current and planned observations, while identifying potential gaps in future observations that might compromise ocean observational records. This document presents a proposed set of long-term ocean observations and identifies a number of challenges for the improvement of knowledge about both the oceans and observing techniques. The overall strategy is to create an observing...

Analysis of salinity measurements near islands on the French continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Lazure, Pascal; Jegou, Anne-marie; Kerdreux, Michel.
The Bay of Biscay is characterised by large fresh water inputs from two major rivers, the Loire and the Gironde, with a mean discharge of about 900 m(3)/s. To describe the spatial and temporal variability of the Loire and Gironde plumes, continuous salinity measurements were made at 4 locations on French coastal islands over periods lasting at least two years. These islands are located at a distance from the large local gradients linked to local inputs. Whereas sea surface salinity in the centre of the Bay of Biscay is 35.6, salinities at the coast vary between about 35 in summer to occasionally less than 30 in late winter or in spring. Minimum salinities do not occur at the same time along the coast, indicating a strong spatial gradient. Near the Loire...

Analysis of the black-chinned tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii reproducing under a wide range of salinities: from RNA-seq to candidate genes ArchiMer
Avarre, Jean-christophe; Dugue, R.; Alonso, Pascal; Diombokho, A.; Joffrois, C.; Faivre, N.; Cochet, C.; Durand, Jean Dominique.
The black-chinned tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii is an ecologically appealing model as it shows exceptional adaptive capacities, especially with regard to salinity. In spite of this, this species is devoid of genomic resources, which impedes the understanding of such remarkable features. De novo assembly of transcript sequences produced by next-generation sequencing technologies offers a rapid approach to obtain expressed gene sequences for non-model organisms. It also facilitates the development of quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assays for analysing gene expression under different environmental conditions. Nevertheless, obtaining accurate and reliable qPCR results from such data requires a number of validations prior to interpretation....

Antioxidant and other biochemical defense responses of Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc. (Horse gram) induced by high temperature and salt stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Naji,Khalid Mohammed; Devaraj,V. R..
High temperature and salinity are the major ecological factors challenging crop productivity in the arid and semiarid regions of the world. Effects of high temperature (43-45°C) and salt stress (0.6 M) on Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc. (Horse gram), were evaluated in terms of antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes. Both treatments caused typical stress responses in this tropical leguminosae. Oxidative stress indicators such as H2O2, TBARS, and proline were significantly elevated. Similarly, the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1), guaiacol peroxidase (POX; EC 1.11.1.7) and acid phosphates (AP; EC 3.1.3.2) were significantly elevated while catalase (CAT; EC 1.11.1.6) was reduced. These treatments had contrasting effects on...

Antioxidant response of cowpea co-inoculated with plant growth-promoting bacteria under salt stress BJM
Santos,Alexandra de Andrade; Silveira,Joaquim Albenísio Gomes da; Bonifacio,Aurenivia; Rodrigues,Artenisa Cerqueira; Figueiredo,Márcia do Vale Barreto.
Abstract Soil salinity is an important abiotic stress worldwide, and salt-induced oxidative stress can have detrimental effects on the biological nitrogen fixation. We hypothesized that co-inoculation of cowpea plants with Bradyrhizobium and plant growth-promoting bacteria would minimize the deleterious effects of salt stress via the induction of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidative protection. To test our hypothesis, cowpea seeds were inoculated with Bradyrhizobium or co-inoculated with Bradyrhizobium and plant growth-promoting bacteria and then submitted to salt stress. Afterward, the cowpea nodules were collected, and the levels of hydrogen peroxide; lipid peroxidation; total, reduced and oxidized forms of ascorbate and glutathione; and superoxide...

Antioxidant-enzymatic system of two sorghum genotypes differing in salt tolerance Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Costa,Paulo Henrique Alves da; Neto,André Dias de Azevedo; Bezerra,Marlos Alves; Prisco,José Tarquinio; Gomes-Filho,Enéas.
Two forage sorghum genotypes were studied: CSF18 (salt-sensitive) and CSF20 (salt-tolerant). Shoot growth reduction as a result of salt stress was stronger in the salt sensitive genotype compared to the salt tolerant one. When the two genotypes were subjected to salt stress (75 mM NaCl) no significant change in lipid peroxidation was observed. However, salt stress induced increases in superoxide dismutase and catalase activities in both genotypes. These salt-induced increases were higher in the salt-tolerant genotype. Peroxidase activity was differentially affected by salt stress in the two genotypes. The activities of these peroxidases were decreased by salt stress in the salt-sensitive genotype and increased in the salt-tolerant genotype. In addition,...
