A new species of Trileptium (Nematoda: Thoracostomopsidae) from Bahia, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.

ABSTRACT A new species of a free-living marine nematode found in Brazil is described: Trileptium ribeirensis sp. nov. The type material is deposited in the Nematoda collection of the Museu de História Natural da Bahia, located at the Universidade Federal da Bahia. Trileptium includes eleven valid species of nematodes that have teeth and jaws positioned forward. The species was collected with the help of corers (3.5 cm in diameter and 30 cm long) on a sandy beach in Bahia. This species is distinguished from its congeners based on a combination of characters of the male (cuticle, buccal cavity, supplement and gubernaculum). An updated taxonomic key to the genus is presented.

Sandy beaches are among the most extensive environments in Brazil and are generally threatened by disorderly urban growth due to their location along the coast, where human populations tend to concentrate. This is especially true in southeastern Brazil, where the largest urban areas are located. Thus, better knowledge regarding these natural resources is of considerable importance. Habitat selection by anchovies (Clupeiformes: Engraulidae) in a tropical bay at Southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology

Distribution of anchovies (Clupeiformes, Engraulidae) was described in the Sepetiba Bay, a coastal area of Southeastern Brazil, to assess eventual mechanisms of habitat selection. Two fish sampling programmes were accomplished; one using beach seine (1998/2000) to catch juveniles in sandy beaches, and the other, using seines (1999/2000) to catch adults in deeper bay areas. Six species representing 4 genera were recorded: Anchoa tricolor, Anchoa januaria, Anchoa lyolepis, Cetengraulis edentulus, Engraulis anchoita and Lycengraulis grossidens. Life history of Talorchestia deshayesii (Amphipoda, Talitridae) in the Ionian sandy beach (southern Italy) BABT

The population structure and reproductive biology of Talorchestia deshayesii (Audouin, 1826) on an exposed sandy beach in Taranto (Italy) was examined during one year cycle. Monthly surveys were performed from September 2002 to August 2003. Individuals were subdivided into sex, measured and abundance were calculated for each sampling. Abundance varied during the study period, with a marked decrease in winter. T. deshayesii, was found in a relative narrow zone near the sea in winter and summer while in spring and autumn the animals were widespread along the supralittoral. Meiofauna communities’ response to an anthropogenic pressure: The case study of green macroalgal bloom on sandy beach in Brittany ArchiMer

Open sandy beaches support key ecological functions and a distinctive biodiversity, but are threatened by an increasing anthropogenic pressure. Among these threats is the occurrence of green tides of Ulva spp., expression of the eutrophication phenomenon. Our study aimed at determining the impact of green macroalgal accumulations on benthic meiofauna inhabiting two macrotidal sandy beaches of Brittany: Saint Nic (impacted) and Anse de Dinan (unimpacted). The presence of Ulva enhanced total meiofaunal abundance and nematode functional diversity when compared to a state free from macroalgal mats. Moon, tidal and diel influences on catch composition of fishes in the surf zone of Pontal do Sul beach, Paraná Zoologia

Fishes were sampled by beach seine during the day and night at the high and low sygygy tides, on a sandy beach at the southeast coast of Brazil. The quantitative results appear to indicate a larger concentration of fish in the surf zone of this beach, in low tides at the start and end of the day. Only eight from the 17 most abundant taxa, appeared to have been influenced singly or in combination by the factors of the moon, day, night and tide.

Natural history of Emerita analoga (Stimpson) (Anomura, Hippidae) in a sandy beach of northern Chile RChHN

Sediment samplings were carried across the intertidal of the beach at Hornitos, northern Chile (22°26´S) during August and November 1996 and March, July and November 1997 for a study of the reproductive and population biology of Emerita analoga (Stimpson) (Decapoda, Anomura) in a region of the Chilean coast characterized by persistent upwelling. The highest abundances of E. analoga occurred during March and December 1997. During November 1996, March and December 1997, the highest abundances occurred below the effluent line, while in July 1996 and August 1997, most of the stages of E. analoga occurred in higher abundances above the effluent line. Mysidacea are common sublittoral crustaceans that inhabit all coasts in the world. In this study, the population characteristics and the reproductive biology of Metamysidopsis neritica Bond-Buckup & Tavares, 1992 were studied in the surf zone of a south Brazilian beach (Atami). Mysids were sampled at monthly intervals from August, 1999 to July, 2000 (total of 29,490 individuals). Individuals were classified into six population categories. The reproductive cycle of the irregular echinoid Mellita quinquiesperforata (Leske, 1778) was studied in populations from two sand beaches with different morphodynamic conditions in Parana coast, from February 1992 through July 1994. Gametogenesis was described by histological and gonad index methods and the differences between both populations were observed in the extension of nutrient storage and spawning period. Both populations exhibited a main reproductive period during spring/summer and a nutrient storage period during autumn/winter months. Sustainability of capture of fish bycatch in the prawn trawling in northeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology

The prawn fishery produces more discards than any other type of catch and captures a large quantity of immature individuals. This research aimed to assess the sustainability of capture of fish bycatch in prawn trawling. Each species was assessed according to two groups of criteria: (1) their relative vulnerability to capture by trawl and mortality due to this fishery (2) recovery capacity of the specie after a possible collapse of the population. Within each group, each species was ranked (1-3), being 1 the highest value, meaning the species is highly susceptible to capture or has a low resilience. The influence of seasonality on fish life stages and residence in surf zones: a case of study in a tropical region Biota Neotropica

Resident fishes and their seasonal use of a surf zone were characterized and identified in the Jaguaribe beach, located on the Island of Itamaracá, state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Monthly towings (March 2006 to February 2007) with a beach seine net (20 m long, 1.5 m high, 5 mm mesh size) in different moon phases and periods of the day (day and night) were conducted. We investigated if the differences in density and nematode communities of intertidal sediments from two Brazilian sheltered sandy beaches were related to environmental characteristics. The upper tide level (UTL) and the low tide level (LTL) of both beaches were surveyed in January (austral summer) and June 2001 (austral winter) during low-spring tides, by collecting samples of nematodes and sediments. Differences in density between beaches, tidal level and seasons, and nematode community structure were investigated. Sediments from both beaches were composed of medium to very coarse sand.
