Estimation of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)) and its space-time variability in global surface ocean waters is essential for understanding the carbon cycle and predicting the future atmospheric CO2 concentration. Comparison of spaceborne measurements of sea surface salinity and colored detrital matter in the Amazon plume ArchiMer

Large rivers are key hydrologic components in oceanography, particularly regarding air-sea and land-sea exchanges and biogeochemistry. We enter now in a new era of Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) observing system from Space with the recent launches of the ESA Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and the NASA Aquarius/Sac-D missions. With these new sensors, we are now in an excellent position to revisit SSS and ocean color investigations in the tropical northwest Atlantic using multi-year remote sensing time series and concurrent in situ observations. Interactions between the Agulhas Current and the eastern margin of the Agulhas Bank ArchiMer

Interactions between the Agulhas Current and the ecologically important region of the Agulhas Bank are studied through the analysis of high resolution along-track altimetry, merged mapped altimetry and in situ measurements of current speed and direction undertaken from a moored Accoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). Comparisons between current observations collected from the ADCP and the satellite altimeters are made to evaluate the validity of the analysis conducted on the altimetry. Both altimetry and in situ observations show that Natal Pulses are a major driver of variability along the eastern margin of the Agulhas Bank. Monitoring of a quasi-stationary eddy in the Bay of Biscay by means of satellite, in situ and model results ArchiMer

The presence of a quasi-stationary anticyclonic eddy within the southeastern Bay of Biscay (centred around 44°30′N-4°W) has been reported on various occasions in the bibliography. The analysis made in this study for the period 2003–2010, by using in situ and remote sensing measurements and model results shows that this mesoscale coherent structure is present almost every year from the end of winter-beginning of spring, to the beginning of fall. During this period it remains in an area limited to the east by the Landes Plateau, to the west by Le Danois Bank and Torrelavega canyon and to the northwest by the Jovellanos seamount. Linear regression is widely used in applied sciences and, in particular, in satellite optical oceanography, to relate dependent to independent variables. It is often adopted to establish empirical algorithms based on a finite set of measurements, which are later applied to observations on a larger scale from platforms such as autonomous profiling floats equipped with optical instruments (e.g., Biogeochemical Argo floats; BGC-Argo floats) and satellite ocean colour sensors (e.g., SeaWiFS, VIIRS, OLCI).
