Stalagmite Orum-1 from a cave near Orumana in northwestern Namibia provides a multi-proxy record of regional drying with increasing global-scale warmth over the last 47 kyr, in a region with few long well-dated location specific paleoclimate records. Data from Stalagmite Orum-1 include carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratios, proportions of aragonite and calcite, pronouncedly differing petrographic fabrics, positions of layer-bounding surfaces, variation in layer-specific width, and changes in layer thickness, all of which combine to support change from wetter to drier conditions. Combined with fourteen U-Th ages, they suggest that climate was wetter in northwestern Namibia during globally cold MIS 3 than it is today, and with more grass than is present... |

ABSTRACT The genus Sloanea is comprised of 150 species, of which about 50 occur in Brazil among several vegetation types but mainly the Amazon and Atlantic forests. The present work provides a synopsis of the Neotropical species of Sloanea in the extra-Amazonian region based on a recent revision of the genus. In general, morphologically Sloanea comprises large trees endowed with buttressed roots; simple leaves; flowers with sepals that may or may not cover the reproductive organs in pre-anthesis phases; stamens with the connective prolonged into an awn that is acuminate, acute or aristate and fruit covered with rigid or flexible bristles or sometimes unarmed. This synopsis describes 17 species, and provides an identification key, illustrations and comments... |

Abstract Amphibian research has grown steadily in recent years in the Amazon region, especially in the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, and Amapá, and neighboring areas of the Guiana Shield. Even so, few data are available for the Amazonian savannas of Brazil. To contribute to the understanding of the diversity of the amphibians of these savannas, we surveyed 15 temporary ponds, six located in open areas, seven on the edge of savanna forest, and two within the forest, in the savanna of the Rio Curiaú Environmental Protection Area (EPA) in Macapá, in the state of Amapá, northern Brazil. Sampling occurred from May 2013 to August 2014 during periods when the ponds contained water. Amphibians were sampled through visual and auditory surveys... |
