30 years of research on insect galls in Brazil: a scientometric review Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Araújo,Walter Santos de.
Abstract The first systematic studies on insect galls in Brazil date to the early 20th century, after which research on insect galls remained dormant in the country, with interest not reviving until the 1980s. The aim of this study was is to document historical trends in publications about insect galls in Brazil over the last 30 years. Papers about insect galls and galling species in Brazil published in peer-reviewed journals from 1988 to 2017 were compiled. A total of 1,378 papers were analyzed, of which 182 addressed insect galls in Brazil. The results showed that the number of publications on the subject has been increasing over the last 30 years, and especially in the last decade. The diversity of journals that published on the subject has also been...

Contribution of the CASA system, based on open source software, to the assessment of sperm characteristics: informetric and usage-based approaches R. Bras. Zootec.
Neumann,Giovano; Bernardes Júnior,Jurandir Joaquim; Sanches,Paulo Vanderlei; Piana,Pitágoras Augusto; Bombardelli,Robie Allan.
ABSTRACT By using informetric tools, we evaluated the contribution and impact of the open source computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) software on sperm studies, especially pertaining to fish. The article was cited 125 times between 2007 and 2014 in four publication types (articles, doctoral dissertations, master’s theses, and books). Among articles, the number of citations increased at rate of three citations per year and the calculated h-index was 17. Of the studies that cited Wilson-Leedy and Ingermann (2007), fish were the main group of organisms studied (61 articles); of these, 34 articles used the open source CASA, covering 23 marine or freshwater species. Studies conducted in 12 countries were published in 21 journals. Four ways of knowledge...

Diversity patterns, research trends and mismatches of the investigative efforts to amphibian conservation in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAMPOS,FELIPE S.; BRITO,DANIEL; SOLÉ,MIRCO.
The number of papers on biology of amphibians has increased in the recent years. A detailed overview of the publications on amphibians can be very useful in assessing the status of our knowledge about this taxonomic group. Due to the large number of articles published, we aimed to assess the scientific contribution of herpetological researches carried out between the years 2001 and 2010 on Brazilian amphibians, considering the diversity patterns, the threats and the research topics that have been published most often. We applied scientometric attention indexes in the reviewed studies from seven scientific databases. To examine the relationship between the numbers of species recorded locally and regionally at different spatial scales, we used an additive...

Pitfalls of artificial grouping and stratification of scientific journals based on their Impact Factor: a case study in Brazilian Zoology Rev. Bras. Zool.
Machado,Fábio A.; Zaher,Hussam.
The present contribution explores the impact of the QUALIS metric system for academic evaluation implemented by CAPES (Coordination for the Development of Personnel in Higher Education) upon Brazilian Zoological research. The QUALIS system is based on the grouping and ranking of scientific journals according to their Impact Factor (IF). We examined two main points implied by this system, namely: 1) its reliability as a guideline for authors; 2) if Zoology possesses the same publication profile as Botany and Oceanography, three fields of knowledge grouped by CAPES under the subarea "BOZ" for purposes of evaluation. Additionally, we tested CAPES' recent suggestion that the area of Ecology would represent a fourth field of research compatible with the former...

Scientometrical review of Dinoflagellate studies in Brazil Acta Botanica
Noga,Pietro Martins Barbosa; Gomes,Doriedson Ferreira.
ABSTRACT Scientific production in developing countries is currently increasing, but there is still an unbalanced distribution of scientific production between developed and developing countries. With the need to elucidate disparities in scientific production, this paper aims to review publications on dinoflagellates in Brazil by discussing spatial and temporal trends. A search for papers referring to dinoflagellates was performed in the Scopus database up to the year of 2016. A total of 125 papers were found, but only 106 were selected according to established criteria. A linear regression was used to evaluate the increasing temporal trend in production and non-parametric ANOVA for comparisons among study categories. Dinoflagellate and toxic taxa-based...

Trends in the scientific production on aquatic microhabitats phytotelmata: a scientometric study Biological Sciences
Teixeira, Ana Paula; Silva, Paulo Fernandes Roges Souza; Souza, João Paulo Francisco de; Alves, Natália Lopes; Guimarães, Ariane; Carneiro, Fernanda Melo.
We performed a scientometry to validate trends in the scientific production on phytotelmata and the importance of these microenvironments in the maintenance of biodiversity. We searched for articles in the Web of Science and looked at publications from 1987 to 2016. We collected years of publication, surveyed organisms, countries where the surveys took place, plants that accumulate phytotelmata, scientific journals that publish more about the topic and their respective IFs (Impact Factor) and the keywords of each article. We built a heatmap using the most frequent keywords in the studies, to investigate the topics studied over the years. We have found 293 publications, increasing over the years. Insects, anurans and crustaceans were the most studied...
