Are sea surface temperature satellite measurements reliable proxies of lagoon temperature in the south pacific? 5

In remote coral reef environments, lagoon and reef in situ measurements of temperature are scarce. Sea Surface Temperature (SST) measured by satellite has been frequently used as a proxy of the lagoon temperature experienced by coral reef organisms (TL) especially during coral bleaching events. However, the link between SST and TL is poorly characterized. First, we compared the correlation between various SST series and TL from 2012 to 2016 in three atolls and one island in the Central South Pacific Ocean. Simple linear correlation between SST and TL ranged between 0.44 and 0.97 depending on lagoons, localities of sensors, and type of SST data. The South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ) is poorly represented in global coupled simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5), with trademark biases such as the tendency to form a “double Intertropical convergence zone” and an equatorial cold tongue that extends too far westward. Such biases limit our confidence in projections of the future climate change for this region. Seasonal and inter-annual ONSET Sea Surface Temperature variability along the northern coast of the Gulf of Guinea 5

The aim of this study is to characterize the coastal upwelling variability at seasonal and inter-annual time scales in the northern Gulf of Guinea (NGoG) using Sea Surface Temperature (SST) collected with autonomous “ONSET” thermometers. Results show that the ONSET SST data are suitable for numerical model evaluation, and provide relevant information in addition to satellite and reanalysis data at seasonal cycle. The minor and major coastal upwellings are present in all the products. The inter-annual SST variability is more pronounced in the western part of the region (Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana) than in the eastern part (Benin and Nigeria).
